View Full Version : Rod Millen RX-8 drifter
Wolverine 08-24-2005, 04:33 AM I posted a while back the Grenade body kit. Then I added some new pics in that thread. Turns out that particular car belong to Rod Millen, father of Rhys Millen. Rod Millen will use the RX-8 platform as his bid at Formula D. The 8 will be powered by an RX-7 motor!....

cLLcLe 08-24-2005, 08:25 AM Holy... thats a big shocker...
That's cool though! Even though now it's just like JIC's RX-8 with a RX-7 engine in it... oh well, still a RX-8!
crimson-rain 08-24-2005, 09:29 AM I guess the Renesis won't be seeing D1 or Formula D until a realiable 350-400whp is reached. IMO, because of the relatively light weight for a stripped RX-8, I think it would only need 325whp.
Im_DANomite 08-24-2005, 10:08 AM it's about damn time

Hey, welcome back to the posts. So that's the car eh? Is Rhys' dad going to drive against him now?
Noguni 08-24-2005, 02:05 PM http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=69872
Yeah my cousin got a clip of him doing a practice run. He also told me he couldn't drift it the first lap. I'm going to be there thats for sure. I'll be helping my friend out at the enkei booth.
mikeb 08-24-2005, 02:06 PM so sweet

A Spec Products 08-24-2005, 02:18 PM Hey, welcome back to the posts. So that's the car eh? Is Rhys' dad going to drive against him now?
Haha, yeah, been busy prepping for the show this weekend. I am also trying to get signed on as a vendor here.
Yep, from what I can see Rod's doing very well.
I'd love to see them tandem together.
RX-Hachi 08-24-2005, 02:42 PM That's really cool. Rod Millen used to race RX-7s in his younger days when he was in his prime. He switched camps after the demise of the 7, it's great to see him back in an RX-8 where he belongs!
The 13B-REW is such known entity in Japan, it's much easier for them to tune it to Drift specs vs. the Renesis. As long as the chassis is SE3P and it's got a rotary, it's still an RX-8 in my book.
Rhys is one of the main players in Formula D. I wonder if the old man still has a trick or two left up his sleeve to better his son?

Agreed.
Yes, I'd say that Rod has more than a trick, and Grenade's looking real pretty right now, as they have the following:
Grenade FD in D1GP driven by Ken Maeda
Grenade RX8 in Formula D driven by Rod Millen
Grenade 180sx in Formula D driven by Kyle Mohan
...and they're going to bring over their S13.5 Grenade 180sx to replace the Grenade 180sx soon....oooh.
Not too shabby.

BlueEyes 08-24-2005, 04:05 PM whats the point of a giant wing on a drift car? racing rice?
A Spec Products 08-25-2005, 01:43 AM whats the point of a giant wing on a drift car? racing rice?
haha its to make you ask questions :)
no really, the wing provides stability when sliding sideways and also provides more traction to the rear wheels with slight down force.
and lets not forget style points.

Wouldn't downforce be counter productive?
And, how would that wing provide lateral stability?

downforce is not counterproductive, when you're sliding you don't want to lose traction, especially in high speed drifts.
its debatable amongst drivers, but science says that wings don't work to their fullest potential until ~120mph.
so i guess true science would say that its more style than function, but some drifters would disagree.

OK. This one is making my scratch my head... if you are in a drift haven't you achieved this by breaking traction? If you had traction you wouldn't be sliding, right?

you break traction to initiate a drift
to have control throughout the drift you need traction
Moonrover333 08-25-2005, 10:50 PM if you didn't need traction to drift than everyone would be rockin wal mart special tires but you see them on VERY expensive r compound tires. you want to be able to break the tires loose to start than you want the tires to grip to control the amount or turn the car does and to stop the drift. also the 8 wouldn't need 325 whp look at the cusco 86 it stomped the entire d-1 feild in 2003 with a blistering 180whp . the 8 needs to be lightened and a revision on the torque curve and it would be a great contender in the d1
dmorales 08-25-2005, 10:53 PM I saw a thing on formula D where they said they mount the spoiler so they create upforce. Most of the time that means merely turning it upside down.
A lot of Horsepower is always good in any sort of racing but it is definitley not needed in Formula D. There are a lot of cars that have less than 200 Hp and are serious competitors.
What's that asian guy with the 86 Corolla? He has amazing driving skill and only about 140 or 170 (can't remember which) and he kept up with a Vjiper with like 600 Horsepower. So I think a Renesis could definitley do the job especially with a stripped down lightened setup.

gh0st 08-26-2005, 11:32 AM drifting shares some rules with grip racing. they still need sticky tires because although the car is out of control, the drivers are still technically controling the cars if that makes sence.
some cars need that wing to keep from completely loosing control and spinning out. the more traction you have, the slower and more controlled things happen.
a few things to keep in mind though. most if not all drifting 86s are completely stripped out and have major modifications done to the suspention and steering. the 86 is notoriously hard to drift as is the rx8.
