taking a page from Nissan, Supra will be built on the new IS/GS platform as 350Z is build on the G/M platform. This way they will be able to keep cost low. Engine will be 4.0L V6. I expect 330-350hp

What da?! RX8 Coupe/convertable in 07?
I think that may be more likely than a new RX-7. RX-8 variant would probably be cheaper to develop, and Mazda would have to worry about a new 7 living up to the heritage and performance of the old RX-7s.

I'm glad to see that the new Supra with a corporate platform and motor. The car should be able to be marketed in the same price range as the RX-8/350Z. Sure RX-8 sales may go down if that is the case and Mazda doesn't built a coupe version, but at least there will be another affordable rwd Japanese sports car in the market.

with a more powerful engine than the Z, i think it will be as fast as the EVO and STI, but short of C6.

^yup, me too. If the new Supra does look like that, I'll give it some very serious consideration.

The Tokyo Auto Show in October is shaping up to be the return of Japan's early '90's near supercars. The GT-R is almost certain to make a showing, a Supra Concept seems likely as well. Still on the fence (or best kept secrets?) are the NSX replacement and RX-7 concept (or some kind of RX coupe). I can't wait for October...

i thought the new supra was going to be like the new lexus lf-a concept???The Lexus concept is said not to be the next Supra, but a very high end NSX like super car. The whispers around the Supra indicate something more affordable by your average Joe. But nobody really knows.

well wasnt the last supra if you were to calculate inflation into it, have costed 60k+?

Soundave
08-22-2005, 06:54 PM
Yah, didn't it rank up there with the old 3rd gen RX7's? Like $40k 10 years ago would be about $60k now?

RX-Hachi
08-22-2005, 08:17 PM
Yeah, but the talk about the Toyota super car had it over well over $100K. While the buzz about a possible Supra had it a bit more down to earth, maybe between $30-$60K, who knows.

here's an idea. How about we worry about hp changes and not a convertible that will look like hell. eh. Or how about tunning the 8 with the suspension mods the Shinka has on the GT models. I think that will be just dandy. Back to you regular schedule program.

I really hope to see a high powered rx8 2 seat convertible. I sold my RX8 because I really had no use for the two back seats, and I wanted a convertible. It became a fun summer car when I got STI as a daily, and it just couldn't meet my needs anymore. I do miss it though, because it's such a great machine. I'd gladly part with my S2K if a convertible comes out. I like the RX8 more overall then the S2K, but it just didn't cut it for me as a pure fun car. I'll just have to sit back and wait, and start saving. Now that I've gone convertible as a fun car, there's no going back for me, so the only way I'll ever own an RX8 again is if it's available as a roadster. :)

Then there's the Mazda5. What is it, a tall wagon or a small minivan? Toyota, Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motor Corp. are eyeing similar vehicles, but General Motors, Ford Motor Co. and the Chrysler group apparently have nothing on their drawing boards.

Um, how about the Ford Freestyle? Chrysler Pacifica? Chrysler PT Cruiser? Chevy HHR?

Or are the US manufacturers making a mistake by branding them as wagon/SUVs instead of wagon/minivans? As if "minivan" isn't the automaker's marketing curse word...

I saw one the other day on the highway. I came up behind it and didn't know what it was from a distance. I thought, damn, that thing is really ugly. I figured it was somebody who drove here from mexico or something in some weird mexican car. Nope, it was a mazda.

I think I got spy pictures of it.
The other day I saw a green car, looks just like the picture about. Had tape and camo all over it, interior wasn't finished, and it had equipment inside.

I'll post pictures tonight. Not great quality since they were my 2mp phone, but as soon as I saw it I knew it was the new Supra.

Ok here they are.
Sorry for the bad quality, but this definitely looks like the new Supra to me. Plus you can't see it in the pictures, but in the grill there was a circular emblum, the emblum was removed though.

I resized the images to fit them on the forum, but if anybody wants to see the origanals I can email them. They suck just as bad, just bigger though :DI agree with the others, looks much more Jaguar-ish than Supra-like, it doesn't seem to be in the mold of Toyota's current styling trends. Something about it just seems more European. And I don't think the Supra would be far enough along to be running these kinds of test mules.

Really hard to say though, I suppose it's possible it could be a Supra. It is a great spy shot regardless. You should of looked harder for a clue to really tell the make. A lot of cars have round emblems.

yeah I expect it to be very competitive price wise with the 350Z. So dont expect it to be like the old J2Z twin turbo Supras, at this price range ull get a reliable and fun sports car with 300+hp naturally asperated. the expensive price was the reason that killed the supra in the first place, Toyota wont do that agian.

Same here - that pic looks a lot like the new Jaguar XK.

The new Supra will (hopefully) be outside of the 350Z range. I hope Toyota starts a second japanese super sports car period ...

I love my RX-8 and like the 350Z and the S2000, as well as the Evo and the Sti (sort of), but the approach to really attack in the high performance segment happened with the likes of Supra, RX-7, NSX and 3000GT. If one manufacturer starts that race again, the others will follow.

Don't count on it. The money these days is in the sport-sedan segment and the //M3 and the C6 Z06 own the 50-70k range where the Supra, 300ZX, RX-7, etc used to compete. The bar is pretty damn high these days. Closest we may come to seeing an actual super car from Japan for the time being will be the upcoming R35 GT-R.

I second that, Toyota already have high performance super cars in development, both lexus, the IS460 (yes not 430) and the LFA super car. expect Japan to be competitive with hp again with the 280ps agreement a thing of the past. just dont expect the supra to be a M3 or vette killer. dont forget the number 1 perogative of a company is to make money. Theres a reason why Nissan hasnt put out a twin turbo 350Z with bulletproof internals. Because they dont sell! I also expect anything that will offer super-car performance will be under the Lexus, Acura, Infiniti badges now. the new NSX, skyline GT-R, and the LFA will begin a new era of japanses performance. Hopefully well see a RX7 this october also.
