View Full Version : Which direction do the rotors spin?
SFShinka 08-12-2005, 07:19 PM I thought about this when I was driving down 101 the other day and listening to the engine purr. I love the fact that the RX-8 challenges my preconceptions, and this is just something I feel is important for me to know about my baby: from the perspective of the driver's seat, which way do the rotors spin, clockwise or counter-clockwise?

EyeBall Fixer...(o)(x) 08-12-2005, 07:40 PM Same direction as your toilet water :)

KYLiquid 08-12-2005, 07:49 PM when your sitting in the car, looking forward, its turning to the left
juikster 08-12-2005, 08:04 PM so if I kick my car hard and and pull G's will the frame torque tends  to want to do what? send it left or send it right, or not much either way.....
StealthTL 08-12-2005, 08:13 PM Clockwise from the front, therefore CCW from where you sit.
This is what it would look like from where you sit, if the rest of the car disapeared

So, ccw in the northern hemisphere, and cw in the southern hemisphere?

radio active.... cw, ccw, bi, or straight.....I'll give it a ten, what the hell, I'm easy...
alnielsen 08-14-2005, 08:03 AM From the front of the car, both the intake and the exaust ports are on the left side of the engine. The exaust port on the bottom, the intake port being on the top. Because you need the intake cycle before you get to the exaust cycle, of an engine, the rotors have to rotate clockwise when looking from the front. Counter clockwise from inside the car.
Yea, this is what everyone else has said, I'm just saying it with a little more detail.

neit_jnf 08-14-2005, 10:49 AM cool thanks!
Gambit 08-15-2005, 10:13 AM So, ccw in the northern hemisphere, and cw in the southern hemisphere?
so what happens if you drive over the equator?
FoxTypeR 08-15-2005, 11:00 AM so what happens if you drive over the equator?
Your gas mileage shoots up because the rotors stop spinning!
In regards to your chasis bend tendency, It will (hipotheticaly) try to bend to the right, but the rotors are soooo low in mas and perfectly balanced that the body rigidity of the 8 would more than make up for it. you would only notice it with a verry accurate scale somehow connected to your suspension , or on verry, verry, verry high output, reving engines like 1/4 mile dragsters.
also remember that our engines are suspended by verry absorbent motor mounts (unlike most piston based cars) wich will absorb most of the torque transfered to the chasis.

It floods :D
KYLiquid 08-15-2005, 12:39 PM so what happens if you drive over the equator?
your car would have 6 speed reverse and 1 speed forward, your throtle response would be horrible since you pulling air in thru the exhaust and most of your intake tract (plastic) would melt from the hot exhaust. :D
