View Full Version : might be the 1st to BLOW GReddy
youngpit 08-12-2005, 12:55 PM Well all was ok while driving so I thought. I had the turbo installed at jpr imports in NJ. When I picked it up it seemed to be a whole new car. Then it started to get progressively worse. I thought it was due to the air/fuel ratio not being right. I changed the maps that were given on the site. The engine became VERY hot all fluids were checked and fine. Had the car tuned by turbotrix in NJ and it was running better but only dynoed at 188. So I guess it was not running right. Then total loss of boost. Ok might be a loose clamp. Nope all were checked. So now it’s back at turbotrix where they are looking at the turbo itself. I will keep all posted if it’s the turbo that is fried
storemannormin 08-12-2005, 01:18 PM Ah man...doesn't anybody have good news about the turbo...It's hard to go and buy it when All I read is negative.
lurch519 08-12-2005, 01:36 PM actually, you are at least the 2nd, as broke_apex_seal blew his at least a month ago
MadDog 08-12-2005, 01:45 PM actually, you are at least the 2nd, as broke_apex_seal blew his at least a month ago
I doubt its that. He would have known it from the sound and the CEL that would come up.

Since there are only a handfull of members with it, its tough. THe pioneers are always the onew to work out the bugs. But there are several who have appearently had good success with the GReddy. For example, RX8PR had his pushing 275HP for 10,000 miles! He's going after more, so he's getting a different setup.

remember, while there's few people out there with turbo 8's most of them I'd say are on here...and then you have to consider that most people with perfectly running cars dont have much incentive to just pop in and say that theyre still OK after 1X,XXX miles or whatever..
it was a similar situation when the rx8 first came out (and it still is) there were all sorts of problem threads, when in reality most of the cars were just fine
storemannormin 08-12-2005, 08:38 PM I just found a place to do my install so I will order it on monday ...I was going to get a body kit first but the need for power is to great....I guess the only way to get all my questions answered is to buy the kit and see for myself....
Hybrid-RX8 08-12-2005, 09:09 PM Are you running your OEM cat.. ... a clogged cat will cause many of the issues your are mentioning. You may have to punch the cat.
BigOLundh 08-13-2005, 01:04 PM I'd be really interested to know why your only getting 188 whp. Keep us posted.

recsate 08-13-2005, 01:15 PM What was your AFR after you had it tuned?
Mine seemed to happy around 12.8:1.
rkostolni 08-13-2005, 01:57 PM no boost at all huh? Are you sure your oil lines were hooked up properly?
Mugatu 08-13-2005, 02:15 PM remember, while there's few people out there with turbo 8's most of them I'd say are on here...and then you have to consider that most people with perfectly running cars dont have much incentive to just pop in and say that theyre still OK after 1X,XXX miles or whatever..

i dont see where you came up with that logic????
if the majority of owners were having perfectly working greddy turbos, they sure as hell be on here braggin on dyno numbers or how its a completely new car. not sure that if a member on here got a brand spanking new turbo and it made him happy, he would be silent about it and not tell anyone. c'mon.
RXhusker 08-13-2005, 03:14 PM Now that is some logic I don't get
Many of us GReddy owners are generally pleased (will be much more pleased when my InterceptorX gets here). I posted after my install -- what do you want a weekly update  I got 250whp with my original GReddy dyno -- since then I have installed the third dongle and had some issues -- waiting to resolve by removing the emanage and taking real control over the ecu. The car has much MUCH more power than stock. My stock dyno was 184whp. From 3000k to 6500k the GReedy is pure sweet power. Tuning is the only real issue and we all know the problem is not the GReddy turbo unit but the fuel/ecu management.
As with everything -- and I believe taken to an extreme in car forums -- the disgruntled is much more vocal than the satisfied.
cretinx 08-13-2005, 03:48 PM Ah man...doesn't anybody have good news about the turbo...It's hard to go and buy it when All I read is negative.
I love the shit out of mine and haven't had a single problem.
BigOLundh 08-13-2005, 03:50 PM i am here, i am boosted, i am pleased
BigOLundh... signing in.
Broke_Apex_Seal 08-13-2005, 04:37 PM I am the 1st to blow up :)
Sapphonica 08-13-2005, 04:53 PM The jury's still out on my GReddy install...
RPIRX-8 08-13-2005, 05:33 PM I was thinking about it but I'm worried about the long term reliability issues. If you are gonna get rid of the car after 70k-80k miles then that might not be as much of a worry. However with the intake/exhaust port locations and the high compression ratio, just not sure this engine is setup for boost in the long term.
That being said, I appreciate all that are testing it out. If I see folks with 20k-30k miles on their turbo without issue, i might jump in.

Everyone is worried about reliability. Anytime you increase horsepower to any engine you are decreasing the life of the engine. Don't be such a puss! I swear you will not be disappointed in the Greddy kit, as long as it is installed right. I've had mine boosted since April and it runs awesome! Your always going to hit a bump in the road when you first install something that needs to be tuned but you will be impressed with the end result. :D

If you don't have the money it's one thing, but to wait untill 80k is stupid if you ask me. Live a little...I swear you will not be disappointed in the Greddy kit, as long as it is installed right. Ok lets not turn this into a pissing match, no need for that. I bought a $30k car I guarantee I can afford a $3k turbo kit. I am simply passing across the point of view of people who are worried about long term effects on the engine of a turbo. This is no different than people who won't buy cars in their first year of production. I'm glad your turbo works great, happy to hear it. But just as that I feel bad for Broke Apex Seal and his blown motor. I hope he gets everything taken care of.

Right on! I couldn't agree more. Waiting for the warranty to expire is just wasting time that you could be having fun! I'm in the midst of installing the GReddy right now! So far, so good. I can't wait to get this thing in there!
youngpit 08-15-2005, 01:35 AM the guys at the shop said they hear the turbo barely spooling up so that is a good sign. i am runningthe greddy cat back i will have the shop look at the cat today, Broke_Apex_Seal sorry did not want to steal the spot light from you :). what did it cost to get the seal fixed i am looking at worst case right now

You make a good point, but note how long your car lasts with FI also depends on how you drive it.
For my normal daily driving i barely hit boost at all. At night its a little more, but i really don't open it up until I get on a track.
If you were to boost everywhere you go.... your gonna kill it. So thats just another factor to take into consideration.
For Everyone else that is jumping on RPIRX-8... not everyone is the same. If he wants to wait for his warranty to expire, thats fine. Our cars are not 100% Solid, and many of our Normally Aspirated owners are taking the cars in for warranty work before 30k miles. If they were boosted, they would be screwed. I personally have a local shop i go to, that does better work than the dealer, so warranty was never a big issue for me, but not everyone is so fortunate.
ANYWAYS, my point is everyone is different, so what worked for you, may not work for him.
-Peace
youngpit 08-15-2005, 11:36 PM well i did not blow the turbo the guys that r working on it left me a message and said they new why it was not working but did not tell me i will let all know tommorow
youngpit 08-16-2005, 01:23 PM well it turns out its the cat that is clogged or fried whatever so now gotta look for a replacement cat or cat elimanator. know i know why it only made 188 rwh on the dyno.
Hybrid-RX8 08-16-2005, 01:27 PM Just like I thought....just punch the cat out for the meanwhile......
you don't necessarily need to have a straight pipe made or put in a new cat yet..
Broke_Apex_Seal 08-16-2005, 01:50 PM engine was 2385 plus tax and I do all the work myself.

Was this the stock cat or an aftermarket hiflow one?
youngpit 08-16-2005, 03:41 PM Just like I thought....just punch the cat out for the meanwhile......
you don't necessarily need to have a straight pipe made or put in a new cat yet..
what do you mean
youngpit 08-16-2005, 03:43 PM Was this the stock cat or an aftermarket hiflow one?
it was the stock one
Spyder_doo 08-16-2005, 03:58 PM Take the catpipe off and beat the combs out of it. Or you could just take it to a muffler shop and have a custom straight pipe made for around $70ish. This will provide more hp too, but I'm not sure how your emanage tune will do with lack of backpressure. What psi do you have it tuned to right now?
Jamie
youngpit 08-16-2005, 04:16 PM its at the stock setting 6psi i think
Spyder_doo 08-16-2005, 04:22 PM I'm going to try to put my straight pipe back on with the turbo and see if that helps the problems I'm having. I'm getting it dyno tuned this upcoming week hopefully, but I'll let you know if it runs alright with the straight pipe with the factory boost settings.
PUR NRG 08-16-2005, 05:34 PM Straight midpipe will have its own tuning problems. The Greddy map is designed for 5.5psi. Even a RP cat pipe will reduce the backpressure to the point where you'll see boost in the 8psi range. At that point it will start to detonate around 5-6k RPM at WOT.

papajoey79 08-16-2005, 06:16 PM What can you do to stop it from detinating at 8 psi?
Richard Paul 08-16-2005, 07:05 PM engine was 2385 plus tax and I do all the work myself.
Can I buy one for that?
zoom44 08-16-2005, 07:24 PM i bet mazmart could get you one for that much richard
Richard Paul 08-16-2005, 08:12 PM i bet mazmart could get you one for that much richard
If I can get an engine for that I'll take it. How do I Check that out?
Don't tell me, They have a website, right. I'm not used to these things yet.
Someone just said they have a vendor thread, I answered my own question. :o
I'm on my way. :)
BigOLundh 08-16-2005, 09:04 PM Even a RP cat pipe will reduce the backpressure to the point where you'll see boost in the 8psi range. At that point it will start to detonate around 5-6k RPM at WOT.
WHAT?
I have the RP midpipe and no detonation problems, nor is the car automatically boosting up to 8psi. Where are you getting this from?
PUR NRG 08-16-2005, 11:16 PM I'm getting this from running the car. Two separate boost gauges read 7.8 psi max and detonation on 91 octane in 60 degree ambient air.

youngpit 08-27-2005, 07:39 PM ok update... found out that the cat was clogged quick fix we hollowed out the cat. wow much better no more non boosting. dynoed the car and retuned it 225.00 rwh with. turbotrix said once the bb pipe gopes on i should be about 235-240 with a nother retune.
BigOLundh 08-28-2005, 07:37 PM I'm getting this from running the car. Two separate boost gauges read 7.8 psi max and detonation on 91 octane in 60 degree ambient air.
so are you saying your car detonated, and the only mod you had was the rp cat?
swoope 08-28-2005, 09:48 PM so are you saying your car detonated, and the only mod you had was the rp cat?
i think the point he is making is if you cant get the exhaust out you cant spin up a turbo.
beers
Spyder_doo 08-28-2005, 11:09 PM Yeah I just took my cat off and put my straight pipe back on and it's nowhere near as loud as it was before the turbo and it runs soooo much better. For some reason the boost never drops either. Another plus is since I'm still running dog rich it shoots flames everytime I shift gears or gear down. It's almost on demand. I love it :D
BigOLundh 08-29-2005, 02:44 AM i think the point he is making is if you cant get the exhaust out you cant spin up a turbo.

get the exhaust out? i am going to assume you mean "if you have too much restriction". When i had my turbo on with oem exhaust/cat it spooled fine. Now that i have aftermarket cat/exhaust it still spools fine.
PUR NRG 08-29-2005, 10:27 AM so are you saying your car detonated, and the only mod you had was the rp cat?Pretty much. I have other mods but none that I believe could contribute to this problem. Again, up to 7.8 psi boost with 91 octane gas causes detonation between 5-6k rpm. I don't know why I'm spooling that high and you're not.
