What's everyone thinking about doing regarding a security system? I've been thinking about the Boomerang2. Has anyone done any research on aftermarket security systems that they'd like to share?

I had a Clifford Concept 600 G4 in my Civic SiR and I LOVED it. Great alarm, tons of features and very reliable. They (unfortunately owned by DEI now) just introduced the new G5 alarms. My dealer is all excited about it and called me up since they though I still had my G4. Anyway, I'm gonna go in over the next week or so and see what they have to say. vudoodoodoo 07-18-2003, 06:22 AM Alarms are useless IMO. If they want your car, they are going to take it. No alarm is going to stop them. Your alarm is just going to tell you your car is stolen. You look out the window and see it zooming down the street. Redshift 07-18-2003, 06:51 AM Yes and no. If they really want it, yeah they are going to get it... but I'm not going to let it be easy for them. Besides, the alarm I had in my SiR had fuel, starter and ignition kills. The only way to move that car once the alarm was armed was to tow it. (The downside to this is if your alarm ever freaks out on you and locks everything down, you are SOL) Sputnik 07-18-2003, 12:02 PM Originally posted by vudoodoodoo Alarms are useless IMO. That's a pretty limited view. There are going to be very few of us with RX8s who will have someone who wants the car bad enough and is capable of getting past what security system we put in the car. There are several "threats" to a car. There are "smash and grabbers" who are after that item you left on the seats or the radar detector on the windshield. Admittedly, you thwart that by not having that stuff out and visible. There are those who are looking for any radio. They will not be looking specifically for an RX8 radio, just any. They will pass up a car with an alarm system for a car without an alarm system because it will be easier. There are those who will want an RX8 for parts. To get those parts, they'll normally take the car and strip the parts elsewhere. If your car has a bit more security than another RX8, they will again go after the easier target (again, an alarm is part of it, where you park it, etc. is another). Basically, with an alarm, you are not making it 100% impossible to steal your car or it's contents. Just like a deadbolt on your house doesn't make it 100% impossible to break into your house, you still install one because it is another level of security that will make a difference. The same goes for an alarm in the car. ---jps RX-8 friend 07-18-2003, 12:10 PM I put a "Viper" alarm in my RX-7. It's wired in such a way that both the stock alarm (starter disable - theives just push start it), and the Viper (fuel pump disable - good luck loosers) work together. It also helps me save the weak door lock as now both doors are unlocked by the remote. Bonus rice points - I installed the Viper LED inside the stock alarm lamp housing, so now it flashes amber (stock) and red (Viper) alternately. :D As stated before, if they REALLY want your car, it's theirs. At least they have to work hard for it. Wing 07-18-2003, 02:35 PM IMO all you need is the flashing red light, it's enough deterant for the smash and grabbers and easy target theives. |
