Was on it years ago, lost 30 pounds. Never felt healthy on it.
Funny story, they sold no carb chocolate bars, my wife got me some. SO My paralegal and I both eat a bar, one bar each. Well, if you read the label, a serving is about 1/8 of a bar..cause it is like ex lax! between the two of us, OMG, all day. Took me a week to recover. It was like that scene in "american pie".
Feras 08-01-2005, 08:36 AM   wow that must of been some chocolate bar.
guy321 08-01-2005, 08:40 AM What a shitty story!
klegg 08-01-2005, 08:42 AM You know how high pressure liquid can take paint, dirt or skin off? Well...you know.
It's true. Overdose on any sugar-free candy, and it will definitely "clean you out".
aggietiff28 08-01-2005, 09:49 AM LOL, that sucks about the nutrition bars. I eat Zone bars, and am about to try to start changing my dieting habits to fit the Zone. I have issues with the Adkins diet as I have known many people who were on it. Anything that raises your cholesterol to such high levels cannot be good (yes, I realize that it also raises the good cholesterol with the bad, and that these are supposed to counter each other). Many of my friends felt groggy the first week and were sick to their stomach (no carbs whatsoever) and one was even being followed by a doctor who eventually told her to quit the diet because her cholesterol had gotten SO out of hand.
bluesunlion 08-01-2005, 01:16 PM wow, that's weird, because my cholesterol dropped when I did it.
However, I do find that Atkins is untenable after the first couple of months, and the lbs come right back as soon as you switch to a more traditional diet.
PS. Tiff, you're the last person in the world who needs to be concerned about her weight. :)
guy321 08-01-2005, 01:39 PM 3 women posting in a row.. very rare.. must be the topic ;)
Speed-ER doc 08-01-2005, 01:43 PM Just goes to show, it doesn't matter how much you make, you can always spend more. He went from $300 million to negative in a few years.
I don't think he had a Mike Tyson-like entourage either. Maybe everybody just finally figured out that his diet system is a scam.
I never could understand a diet that would allow you to eat stuff like bacon, whipped cream, and butter but wouldn't allow fruit. WTF???? Zone is much more sensible for people who need a diet plan.
babylou 08-01-2005, 02:31 PM For Atkins to successfully come out of bankruptcy they are going to have to trim some fat...err I mean cut costs.

The candy bar probably had maltitol in it. Maltitol has a laxative effect on most people. I found out the hard (soft?:o) way after eating half a bag of "sugar free" Reese's Peanut Butter cups.
The best "sugar free" stuff is made with erythritol which does not cause the Ex-Lax effect. Ross candy bars (which you can get at Wawa) are made with erythritol.
guy321 08-01-2005, 03:03 PM Here's the diet my grandmother (and probably her grandmother before her) used and put me on as a child.
breakfast :
a medium sized bowl of congee (rice and water)
lunch:
like 5 green sprouts of some kind, one very small piece of meat or salty fish and a bowl of rice.
Dinner:
5 green sprouts of some kind, 2 or 3 larger (maybe 2 inches long and 1/2 inch wide) pieces of chicken or other meat and a bowl of rice.
same thing every night till you die or move.. seems to help keep the weight down and pocket book filled though.
I think Luftwaffle knows what I mean..
MadRonin 08-01-2005, 03:05 PM LOL, that sucks about the nutrition bars. I eat Zone bars, and am about to try to start changing my dieting habits to fit the Zone. If your friends were doing induction and were taking in 0 carbs then they were not doing the diet correctly. At no point in the Atkins diet do you cut out carbs completely. People who follow the diet that way are exactly the sort of people the media lock onto when they want to demonize Atkins and the diet. Followed properly you will probably feel sick for the first week or so, but that is because of a reduction in carbs, not elimination. Not everyone is feels that way, btw. Taking a multi-vitamin helps a great deal. You also have to drink a lot of water.
As for cholesteral, your results may vary. My cholesteral went from 135 to 133. ;) However, my friend's good and bad cholesteral went up. But, his family also has a history of bad cholesteral; mine doesn't.
MadRonin 08-01-2005, 03:18 PM Maybe everybody just finally figured out that his diet system is a scam.
I agree with you on a lot of things Doc, but this is not one of them. I believe in results and I know that both times I was on the Atkins diet I lost 70lbs+. The first time through I did not follow the diet to the letter and I felt sick just like everyone else. Once I realized what I was doing wrong, I felt great and the weight came right off. It was by far the fastest and easiest way I've ever lost weight. And it certainly was not from calorie reduction or water weight loss either. I ate on average 3500+ calories a day. That was while I pretty much sedintary. The only exercise I got was a 20 minute walk I took at lunch with one of my co-workers.
The reason I stopped? I got bored. There were very little options when I first did Atkins for alternate foods. Plus it's expensive as hell to buy meat and poultry in the quanities my wife and I were eating. The second time I quit because it was too much of a hassle.
The point of the diet is weight loss. I lost weight. Therefore it is not a scam. No magic pills or supplements; just basic science. The body burns carbs before fat, take away the carbs and the body burns fat instead. I'm sure it's more complicated than that, but that's what I learned in Biology class in high school. ;)
I don't think it's a long term solution, but then again I've never found anything short of calorie reduction and regular exercise that was.

For me that would equal a starvation diet. ;) :p :D
PoLaK 08-01-2005, 03:21 PM Don't scare me with shit like this, I thought you were talking about something important.... Atkins Rotary.....
Speed-ER doc 08-01-2005, 04:15 PM I don't think it's a long term solution, but then again I've never found anything short of calorie reduction and regular exercise that was.Exactly. In order to obtain long-term results, that is the only effective method. Any other "system" is a scam.

I agree with this post. Obviously you have a lot of experience with the diet.
I was on the Atkins diet (very strictly, very seldom cheated) and I lost 38 pounds. Most of the weight was lost in the first 3 months, then another pound or two for the next 7 or 8 months.
Stayed on the diet hardcore for nearly three years. Then I slowly went off it in terms of cheating more and more, but never going off it completely (always tried to control carbs to an extent).
The diet definitely works. It CAN be a long term diet, but the difficulty is exactly what MadRonin talks about: the lack of variety (and expense) make it difficult.
It was largely this lack of variety on the diet that made the Atkins low carb bars and other foods such a large success! Unfortunately, I found that these bars really didn't work very well, and they seemed to stop my weight loss completely! I don't know if I ever bought into the whole "Net Carbs" idea (you reduce carbs by the amount of fiber to get the "net carbs" or "effective carbs").
I still maintain a low carb diet, but not as strict as before. If I need to lose some weight, I go back on the "induction" part of the diet, and will usually lose weight again pretty quickly.
Overall The ATkins diet is the best diet I have ever been on. For some reason, it seems that women don't do quite as well on it as men.
klegg 08-02-2005, 09:15 AM I am on the "high stress diet"I have lost 11 pounds in a week and a half.

That'll do more damage to you than any low-carb diet ever could, my friend. Have you ever considered meditation?

I could medicate my parents...that would fix a lot of it!
Outside of that, this happens with me sometimes. When I prepare for a trial I often forget to eat...for a week or so. It makes up for all the bannana boats and sundays.
If I have a high impact hearing, in value or effect on my clients life, it is the same way.
Toward then end of my brothers life, I dropped roughly 25 pounds in a month

I think he's kinda been dead for a couple of years. Got dizzy on hit diet and slipped and fell. He was on an icy slope, and laid there the whole night and a bunch of his organs quit because of exposure or something if I remember correctly.

That type of diet, the "no eat" diet, doesn't really work at all, so try to remember to eat stuff. That sort of dieting makes you gain weight. If you don't eat your metabolism slows down, and when you then do eat you gain a lot of weight.
klegg 08-02-2005, 10:13 AM yes, but I also am pretty active, which is why the weight goes off so fast. I do not do it on purpose, I just forget to eat, or the thought of food is not attractive.
It takes a lot for me not to find food attracxtive. I love to eat. In fact, I am thinking I may try to take my wife out this week for seafood. She deserves a night out.
guy321 08-02-2005, 10:15 AM Klegg, if you intake less than 1000 calories a day, your hair folicles do not have enough energy to regenerate.

His diet has absolutely nothing to do with his death. He slipped on ice (http://www.cnn.com/2003/HEALTH/04/10/atkins.hospital.reut/) outside of his office, and fell and hit his head on the sidewalk. He was taken to the hospital right away where they performed surgery to relieve pressure from swelling. He remained in a coma for over a week and then died (http://www.cnn.com/2003/HEALTH/04/17/obit.atkins/).

I know, it was only a joke, I mentioned he was on an icy slope :p
TODreamer 08-02-2005, 11:23 AM The key to weight loss (provided your weight issue is not glandular)..is happiness. sure you gotta eat more sensibly but happiness is ultimately the key. If you're on a diet that makes you miserable, its only a matter of time before you say "f*ckit" and end up right back at square one.
You dont have to starve yourself.. just train your body.
You like to eat?.. then eat... 6 lil meals a day nicely spaced out and you'll never be hungry and end up over eating at any one time. Thus you can have the carbs.
Calories?.. NO empty calories.. cut that shit out. You like chocolate? cut down your consumption and find something else more heathly to indulge in (within reason of course).. not all healthy food tastes like shit... do your homework on the various foods you can eat
Water?.. drink LOTS of it....when you think youve had enough.. drink more.
Physical activity.... this one makes a MAJOR difference.... try try try to fit this in somehow, someway. It doesnt have to be boring treadmills... find something you like and make an activity out of it... you can also try hitting the weights.. no its not aerobic but that will peel the weight off too

Yep, I'll second that from TOD too. Diets are for life, not for losing weight just to gain it back.

Your 18 year old super-metabolism hasn't had to worry much about losing weight yet, I'd wager.
Wait till you turn 25-30 and those Levis start getting a bit tight, and remember your own advice. :p

I'm not 18.
I don't wear blue jeans or Levis.
I already lift, run, eat 6-8 small meals a day, drink basically only water (occasionally something flavored but caffeine free), and don't really eat much junk food :p. I already take my advice :).
Speed-ER doc 08-02-2005, 11:45 AM I'm not 18.I didn't say you were. I said your metabolism was 18.
I don't wear blue jeans or Levis. Why? I thought everybody wore Levis. I must be biased living in Texas.
Rotarian_SC 08-02-2005, 11:56 AM Why? I thought everybody wore Levis. I must be biased living in Texas.
No, basically everyone wears Levis. My aunt was financial director for the Levi-Strauss family even. Blue jeans have just never felt comfortable to me, so I've just stuck with khaki.

How hard is it to take in 1000 calories a day? Some crap like the butter short bread cookies are like almost 200 calories, in one tiny cookie!!!
