View Full Version : STAY AWAY from the rotary valve stem caps!!!

I have had them on my 8 since 9/2003 with no problem, until last week. Since they stick out beyond the wheel, I accidently touched a curb and it evidently hit the rotary valve stem cap and "POOF"..............the valve stem broke! After a $175 replacement valve stem with the sensor in it. I have went back to the nice reg. length plain aluminum valve stem caps. Just thought I'd warn you guys!

You may not want to blame the valve caps, but they are indeed the problem. Of course, touching one to the curb was a long shot, but I touched it so lightly that I did not even know it. The valve stems are ALUMINUM=soft. Extending them in anyway beyond the wheel will cause the valve stem to break off if they touch a curb or whatever. If you have them on your car, it can happen to you too! And then you will find out that it's not covered under warranty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bye bye $175. Hello new valve stem.

The sick part...that looks like an M1 (Miata). How you could run into a curb with that I will never know. They are so easy to maneuver.

Was tempted to get the rotary valve caps myself, but I've heard that some people have had serious problems with them corroding or whatnot...at which point they become a major PITA to remove. So yeah, I'm sticking with my plain plastic caps.

Well, I have them and have had no problems so far. I'm sorry that some people have had theirs stolen. That's a positive for living in a low crime area, I guess.

I check the air in my tires fairly regularly, so I don't let the caps sit for really long time without removing them. Maybe that is why I haven't had trouble getting them off. If they are a tightened a little too much, I just grab a pair of work gloves and they twist right off.

Very true. Although I had my RX-8 with front spoiler for 1.5 years before I finally pulled in too far to a parking space facing a curb. Even a slight impact with the concrete at ~1-2 mph scuffed the plastic pretty bad  . The good thing is that the scuffing is mostly on the bottom/underside, so you don't really notice it unless you're inspecting the front of the car.

rotary-shaped valve stem caps?! Jeebus, like there isnt enough crap on the car thats already triangle shaped. I guess do whatever floats your boat though.

And uhh, the problem is with the valve step cap, he didnt hit the curb with his rim, its the valve stem thats STICKS OUT from the rim thats the problem.

Yea, someone also stole the black plastic vavle stem caps off my car to0. Still cant understand why you would steal them off a car, you can get a 4pack for like 0.59

What the hell are you doing driving so damn close to the curb for? I know in California we can park up to 18 inches from the curb. But getting that close to the curb is wheel terror.

I love my Rotary Valve Stem Caps.

PeteC
10-22-2005, 11:52 PM
Well it's just a bad design. If your rim gets scratched it's not going to leave you stranded someplace. And that's exactly what will happen if you lose a valve stem like I think he is describing. Unless you shell out foor the spare tire kit.

As far as close to the curb, well yeah, you'd have to be real close but heh, it happens and it shouldn't leave you stuck somplace.

Dragonfc3s

18" from the curb where I live put's you 3/4 in to the traffic lane - vs - 1/2 way in to it. You park as close the curb as possible here or you'll lose the whole car.

hell yeah, its the smart man's curb feelers so i dont scratch up that 3,000 dollar set of 5zigens....

when i get to close to the curb the extended valve cap will take the hit and keep the wheel from getting scratched so i have to replace a 175 dollar valve stem instead of a 750 dollar wheel. good thing i have sense enough not to park within 4 inches of the curb

I've hit the curb one time while parallel parking. It scratched the rim a tiny bit since I barley nicked it.

I don't know why you guys can't understand why someone couldn't possibly ever hit the curb, and why this wouldn’t be a problem if you did hit the curb.

Thanks for the advice, while I don’t plan to hit a curb anytime soon, its good to know having those valve caps will leave me stranded if I do.

well chances are he didn't break anybody's legs over a 10 dollar set of valve caps and i think he was just trying to add flavour to his story by adding that embellishment, rather than just trying to "impress" us.:eyetwitch

And uhh, the problem is with the valve step cap, he didnt hit the curb with his rim, its the valve stem thats STICKS OUT from the rim thats the problem. So if the front of the car hits a parking stop it's the front of the cars fault and not yours? The dude needs to take some responsibility for his own screwups and quit blaming others.

Dragonfc3s
10-24-2005, 09:54 AM
Shit happens and if the shit happens because the valve stem is sticking out past the rim and tire where it shouldn't be due to an extended cap on the valve stem then that would be that shit's fault... Remember HE didn't curb the rim and I doubt if he was considering the extended length of the valve stem when estimating his clearance while parking, but I'm sure you do that all the time... Every time somebody comes on this forum and post something informative that could be an issue to others you get 80% of the posts following it with wussy ass comments. Usually with something like "Why didn't you use the search" yadda yadda... Well while I'm ranting I'll answer the question of why people don't search on this forum. It's because there is so much bullshit posted on here, you have to dig threw the search results for hours to find an answer. If you don't have anything useful to say then don't say anything.

I may be a noob to this forum, but my join date on RX7club is Feb 2001 and that's only because the 3 years prior that I was on there got tossed after they got hacked and had to restart the board. I'm also a Mod on nopistons.com and I've built over 60 rotary engines, built my own 20B T76/Microtec FD and N/A/Motec 20B FC and a few dozen customers FD's most at 400-500hp and all running Apexi' Power FC's. I just picked up the AT 8 a few weeks back as a daily driver, but I'm already thinking of getting a MT as a new project car. -edit-

I noticed your rather cocky sig too, and you've got some balls coming here a new member saying "People who tell you to search are just hiding there inability to answer your question"

you're completely wrong, if you do a search on something you will find the same thing repeated over and over again, if moderators and such did not enforce that then there would be so many duplicates it would be rediculous and it's a complete waste of bandwith. when people say do a search IT MEANS THE TOPIC HAS BEEN DISCUSSED AND YOUR QUESTION HAS BEEN ANSWERED, not im too stupid to answer your question so im just going to say search.

I guess we should just delete threads older then 30 days to keep people like you satisfied? People new to the RX-8 (#) will learn much more reading through those 50 pages then they will by us spoon feeding them and wasting everyone else's time by creating multiple threads with the same info.
