Question Evaluation and Question

I just bought the Yokohama AVS ES 100s for my 8. Same size as stock set-up. So far I've put about 30 miles on them and they're a vast improvement to me over the Potenzas. They're quiet and smooth and extremely sticky, not to meantion the tread is absolutely sexy . I'll try to keep you posted as I put more miles on.

My question is however, I didn't have a Mazda dealer put on the tires. Well my TPMS light is staying on. Am I going to have to take my car to a dealer and get them to reset the sensors? I know it's a possibility that the sensors could be damaged but I watch the guy put them on the rim and he was very careful. My thing is that I read in the manual that if the tire has a steel braided sidewall that they would affect the TPMS. If this is so will it always make the light stay on or is there a possible fix for it? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks guys!

I just checked the pressure in the tires. 3 are 51psi and 1 is 48psi. The load for the tires is 1360 @ 51psi max pressure. Should I lower the other 3 tires to 48 or raise the 1 to 51? Another thought is, is the PCM programed for a specific psi from the tires and anything over that set it off. I just need some input. I plan on going to a Mazda dealer tomorrow to check if I can't fix it tonight.

Tire pressure

I go with 36 lbs.. Mazda will tell you something a lot lower.Check your manual it might say 28 lbs.. That is pretty soft. Try 28 to 36 and go with the right that is best for you.

Hot Or Cold Tires

Remember check pressure with cold tires.

Some manufacturers have the OE sensors designed to go off for over inflation as well as under inflation. As to whether Mazda is set up this way i can't say. I would recommend dropping down to the the factory specified air pressure and reseting the TPMS computer using the guide that is found in your owners manual. I would try this method before you take your car to the dealership. It might save you a few dollars.

Thanks! I guess I'll have to dig around in my manual some more.

So dropping the pressure won't hurt anything correct, other than slightly fast treadwear, right? They filled up the tires to 45 or 51 right when they put them on the rim if that makes a diff in anything. I'm going to have to drive over 100 miles this afternoon to pick up a friend. I wanted to get this fixed before I left. Thanks again!!!

Just checked the manual and it says for 225/45/R18 91W (which is the same thing I bought) it should be 32psi all around. I'll play with the pressure in about an hour and see what happens. Any more suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

The acceptable range is 26-49 psi. Anything under 26 or over 49 psi will trigger the warning. Sounds like three of you tires were over.

Actually, the tires will wear faster when you over inflate them. The higher the air pressure the stiffer the tire. As the tire becomes more rigid you eliminate flexibilty in the side wall which makes the tire "scrub" more causing the tire to wear out faster. Most of the wear will be in the center of the tread.

Most likely when the tech ran the air pressure up to bead the tire (normally between 50 and 80psi depending on the tire) he just forgot to let the air pressure back down.

I deflated them to about 40psi. When I reset the TPMS I checked the hot pressure and it was anywhere from 44-46psi in all 4 wheels. I figured this would be acceptable and if it gets too high on the highway I'd just pull over and let out more air. I have a portable air pump in case I need to add. I'll be cruising around 80mph this evening on an asphalt highway. Wish me luck and thanks again everyone!

Keep in mind when you are deflating the tire that as a tire heats up, the internal air pressure will increase. This is why you should always check the air pressure when the tire is cold. I would still suggest dropping to at least 35psi.

NEITHER!!! The sidewall lists the MAXIMUM safe tire pressure when measured cold. That MAXIMUM pressure has absolutely nothing to do with the RECOMMENDED pressure for your vehicle. IGNORE the maximum pressure on the sidewall completely - you should never be anywhere close to that number.

To find what Mazda recommends for your car, look on the door jamb - Federal law requires car manufacturers to post a label with the recommended tire pressures there. It's also in your owners manual. The correct tire pressures will be in the 28 - 32 psi range.

Regards,
Gordon

I let out enough air to put the pressure to 36psi and it feels much better, more solid, quieter, and doesn't feel like it's going to roll over on the sidewalls. I just put 170 miles on them and they were great. Did about 85-90 mph on the highway and they were very smooth, quiet, responsive, and most importantly stable. I'm really enjoying these new tires so thus far I strongly recommend them. I'll check the pressure again in the morning when they're bone cold and adjust from there...thanks for everyone's input. Now I just have to figure out what I'm going to do about them chipping my rims. Needless to say I'm quite upset. Didn't notice the damage til just a little while ago. Any suggestions for this now?

Later!
