I have done the best time after review of all the videos. (and they are coming later)

The previous best time from the half worn RE040 is 1'35.9"

Since then I have done.
2nd oil cooler,
Odula intake,
R Magic air filter, RB short shifter,
but the most responsible piece of equipment.
Potenza RE55S 245/40-18 SR rated (hard compound)


My review of this tyre:
The tyre is FAN-TAS-IC. :cool:

1. Very noisy tyre.
It is extremely noisy but the ride is good. I had to get dance music to Vol 7 or above so I will not hear the road noise.
It has a very stuff side wall so it gives a very good road response.
But the trade-off is to have more road noise to your ears, so it is not really confortable if used as a road tyre. :o

2. Fantastic grip
Hence, more confident with the turn in. The stock suspension (strut reinforced) holds pretty well but there are too much load on the tyre still. Coilover will help.
I turned in the first turn of the Sandown raceway like a man possessed. Going oversteered, understeered when turning in, the tyre helped you to grip and stay away from the outside curve. PERFECT!

In the wet, it can be tricky since the grip is resulted from a higher temperature generated from the tyres but it is not going to acheive that in the wet road. DSC is required :rolleyes:

3. Still last as much as the road tyres
After all this fun, only a small portion of rubber has been used. I reckon I can have it for 7-8 track days on those. Similar wear was seen in the RE040 on the track. IMO ;)

4. Reasonably priced
Best of all it is cheap. You can get one for about $450, but I got a special price of $380 a corner ;)

Highly recommended if you track your car a lot. You will end up saving and having so much fun.

Good review, taka...I'll be interested to see what they do for you at Wakefield (if you have room to bring them ;) ) 1:14 is about the number on road tyres, although Michael Taylor (Motor editor) said Ric Bates did 1:12 when Motor did the 2003 PCOTY at Wakefield.

I also find that I don't need that much air pressure in the semi slick, since the heat on the semi slick increases the volume of air inside.

I ran at 36psi (hot) all around and found it is the best for me. I ran 43 psi (hot) and the car was very bouncy on fast turns.

When I used to have the road RE040, I ran 43 psi hot and 40 psi cold.

for very long. They are guidelines for Porsche's top model and useful to

very few people. I only managed 150km/h at the end of back straight which

is hopeless i think?

If you were to read the last line , i never suggested that the RX8 WOULD / COULD match those figures , however lowering those posted speeds made by the porsche by 20 % would be achivable from memory i got around 170 km/h on the straight . ;)

I found the information very usefull :D , allowing for the type of car, used and driver it can be used as a guideline ;)

I am the sort of person who does not care and will not look at the odometer 50-100m before the first turn.

I am the sort of person who cares about the gear that I am in, where to break, where to lift off, which line I take and should I turn in late with light braking to get more grip, am I hurting the front outside tyre by doing this...., when to put the throttle and am I ready to catch the power slide ..... :p.

Oh well it is just me.

Knowing your car,self and your driving abilities on the track :p to me is the most important aspect , , your senses are your guide to speed no need to look at the dials .or check your gears go with the force ;)

Your waaaaaaay to techknical , ;) learn to feeeellll your car and be as one grasshopper :D

Nice lap....you seem to have a nice, smooth style (although I'd need sound to be absolutely sure ;) ) Your approach above sounds just right....might be time to get yourself a Formula Ford :)

You are absolutely right Timbo. I took the tyre off yesterday and there are more wear on the right front than the left rear --- very clearly too --- especially on the outside. I think there is due to the first turn and the Dandenong corner that the car is off camber slightly, high speed and turning left. There are Michellin tyre guys there and they said it is very normal due to the lay out of the track. And yeah the Wakefield run I can use the left side more...

One thing to add. They are directional tyres... so there are a set of right and a set of left tyres and you cannot swap it around. :p
