Does anyone know of a carbon fiber look overlay for the hood. I don't want to spend big money, plus I will be making a split hood and real carbon fiber won't work.

View Full Version : carbon fiber look???? 10kRPMS 07-18-2005, 12:28 PM Does anyone know of a carbon fiber look overlay for the hood. KYRX8 07-18-2005, 01:09 PM its a neat idea, but i dont think you'll be foolin anyone BlueEyes 07-18-2005, 01:13 PM The so called "real" carbon fibre hoods aren't even fooling anybody. All fibreglass, with a couple layers of carbon around the edges for appearance. No wonder they weigh more than stock. Don't do it, it's going to look terrible. Dlin23 07-18-2005, 01:31 PM Well here it is my 8 with a cf hood, sorry for the bad pics but will get new pics once i get my 8 back from the shop =( Rotary Rasp 07-18-2005, 01:46 PM Just get the spray on Carbon Fiber. They sell it at pepboys i'm sure. Pkskull77 07-18-2005, 02:09 PM Well here it is my 8 with a cf hood, sorry for the bad pics but will get new pics once i get my 8 back from the shop =( Why would you do such a thing? 10kRPMS 07-18-2005, 05:36 PM I want to add to the car but do not want to cut up a real carbonfiber hood. XDEEDUBBX 07-18-2005, 06:00 PM u need to get bitch slapped zoom44 07-19-2005, 10:58 AM whats a split hood? khtm 07-19-2005, 11:10 AM u need to get bitch slappedhahhahahaha so true Rotary Rasp 07-19-2005, 11:43 AM Autozone has a new wax that you rub in your paint and then buff out to a carbon fiber look. You should check it out. ;) XDEEDUBBX 07-19-2005, 11:50 AM Japan actually makes a real carbon fiber overlay you can add to your existing hood, then again, they get a kick out of putting oversized pikachu pics on their hoods zoom44 07-19-2005, 01:59 PM you could probably get a vinyl overlay that looks like carbon fiber much cheaper than a carbon fiber overlay. jenkins-crew 07-19-2005, 02:11 PM Just go to a graphics shop, they can usually hook you up. But I don't think it will turn out very well or last long. Pkskull77 07-19-2005, 02:33 PM Not to get off topic, but if there is one thing on the 8 that does not need upgrading it's the cars looks. Carbon Fiber is not going to lose you weight on the 8, so why bother. Unless of course you like the "rice boy" look. XDEEDUBBX 07-20-2005, 12:41 AM i don't think carbon fiber hoods are rice at all. If you go to japan most of the tuned cars out there are sporting carbon fiber hoods. I got mine for looks cause the CF hood and stock hood weigh about the same. jenkins-crew 07-20-2005, 06:57 AM Hey, some people like carbon fiber and some don't :D 10kRPMS 07-20-2005, 07:59 AM Well I guess it will be a CF hood than. storemannormin 07-22-2005, 01:15 PM i GOT CF FOR THE LOOK ONLY...ITS NOT RICE AT ALL "Shanika" 07-22-2005, 01:26 PM Not to get off topic, but if there is one thing on the 8 that does not need upgrading it's the cars looks. Carbon Fiber is not going to lose you weight on the 8, so why bother. Unless of course you like the "rice boy" look. I think that's uncalled for. Keep that type of comments off a great site like this one. zoom44 07-22-2005, 01:33 PM well no tto step too far outsie my mod responsibilities but- doing to your car somethign that LOOKS like it adds performance even though you know it DOESNT is actually the definiton of the term "rice" as used here. so to use carbon fiber- its function being to make parts that are lighter than stock for a performance benefit- to make part that is not lighter, and could be heavier, solely for the look of it would be rice. and who ever said its not rice because all the owners of cars in japan do it? thats laughable, really. *the opinion expressed in this post is soley that of the poster and does not reflect in anyway the opinion of the RX8Club forum, its management or owners. thank you* 10kRPMS 07-22-2005, 02:11 PM Wow I didn't mean to get everyone going. KYLiquid 07-22-2005, 02:33 PM the carbon fiber vynil that you can get doesnt look anything like carbon vynil, at all. if you really want the look with little price, just wrap your hood in the CF cloth and slap on some urethane, it will look much better than vynil and wont be as much as a real CF hood. even getting a REAL CF hood ( i like the look of 'dry carbon fiber' ) you save very little weight over the stock aluminium hoods that the RX8 and MX5 have. if you want to shave weight, cut all the underbracing off the stock hood and run hood pins, cuts the hoods weight in half. I did it on my miata, it was lighter than the lighets CF hood I could find ~6lbs vs 8lbs for CF. Smoke Honda 07-22-2005, 03:35 PM I think I know what you're trying to do. No offense but he IS going for the rice look. In a good sense that is. Split hood, opens from the middle like doors, you can see this often in car shows. It does look really nice. But however, you'll be actually be better off cutting a carbon hood then your own hood. I think it is always better to keep your oem things laying around just in case. Another reason being that if you don't have a black car and open up your hood it would look kinda funny. BTW: Give the guy a break. At least he is trying to do somthing different for his 8. We all do things that isn't always performance. Maybe he wants to show his 8. I've had a good amount of carbon work while I was being trained as an aircaft mechanic and I think he completely sway away from wrapping his hood with carbon. If he doesn't have enough skill with carbon, the weave would look really bad afterwards. Some other reasons being that bubbles could form because of the contact, or the carbon could warp. Do your thing 10K, whatever floats your boat. storemannormin 07-22-2005, 03:50 PM well no tto step too far outsie my mod responsibilities but- doing to your car somethign that LOOKS like it adds performance even though you know it DOESNT is actually the definiton of the term "rice" as used here. so to use carbon fiber- its function being to make parts that are lighter than stock for a performance benefit- to make part that is not lighter, and could be heavier, solely for the look of it would be rice. and who ever said its not rice because all the owners of cars in japan do it? thats laughable, really. *the opinion expressed in this post is soley that of the poster and does not reflect in anyway the opinion of the RX8Club forum, its management or owners. thank you* DEFINITION OF RICE IN WEBSTER: BUYING A 12000$ SUNFIRE SPENDING 24000$ IN MODS NOW THAT IS RICE.... zoom44 07-22-2005, 04:10 PM well put smoke honda OptimusWang 07-24-2005, 09:39 AM well no tto step too far outsie my mod responsibilities but- doing to your car somethign that LOOKS like it adds performance even though you know it DOESNT is actually the definiton of the term "rice" as used here. Then by your own definition, anybody who has upgraded their wheels w/o going to a lighter wheel setup (or going hardcore and dropping to smaller/lighter wheels altogether) is a ricer? Hehehe, I think some people might disagree with your broad definition of "ricer" :D |
