Woo Hoo,

well that was hardly worth waiting for, it's got bi-fold doors.

the fat vectra gets a run in the country side, and the wee guy gets a crap shirt, did a lot of that seem like filling?

Damn, I was watching in black and white and assumed it was a supremely gorgeous titanium car! ;)

By the way, that Hy-Wire fuel cell car was sent up the hill at Goodwood today in the same group as the Porsche Carrera GT and the Nissan 350Z. It wasn't quite as quick as either... ;) It looks VERY SF though, Bladerunner vehicle. I'd have perused it more in the paddock had I known it was worth five million dollars. It was a shame there wasn't an RX-8 on the hill, not that it would have been a real contender. The F1 cars were ear-splitting, you've no idea until you hear one for real.

Hey look at it this way.

No criticism.

"We like this" JC

Car looked FAB and had great presence.

They weren't allowed to drive it!!

Velocity RED was just stunning, I'm a happy man!

Just to prove the RX-8 made it on top gear (even if it was for only 15 seconds :()

A nicer view ... does this mean we get fog lights as standard?

And finally ... Is this the tiny weeney spoiler they have said they are adding to UK spec cars?

MarkW
07-13-2003, 04:34 PM
And more importantly, that car had the red/black steering wheel!!

Nice to see it with a UK plate on as well, which looks OK IMHO.

And just to proove the red steering wheel thing:

er... yes. It's a legal requirement.
& yes again, that's the lip spoiler.

sadly ... I don't get top gear ... but what happened? According to the top gear website, they had a show with an RX-8 but they decided to drive the GM Hywire instead. Is that this episode? Did they say if they were going to do a review next week? Thanks. :)

The REALLY funning thing is that I went to Brooklands today for an mx-5 members group thing and then popped into T W Whites afterwards and spoke to Rob there...

1) He categorically denied that there have been ANY RHD cars in the UK at all other than the Blue one - WRONG!
2) He said the car would not be on Top Gear cos he wasn't told about it - WRONG!

BTW he's going to Henley tomorrow with his T W Whites attire - please feel free to ask him loads of q's (and rip the pee) - he's already told me that he doesnt read the forums, so thats another reason to do so.

He also still said it would be end of Oct for the car too.....

yawn.

Yes it looked good in Red, but Im not changing my order unless someone now wants silver that had red!!!! But the red/black interior? No thanks.

Are front foglights a legal requirement? How come some cars dont have them then?

Also, still think the ride height looks a little bit high in that pic above, and would benefit (looks wise) from another 1/2 - 1" drop.

Car looked great overall though :)

The Rear Fog light is a legal requirement, but front ones are optional.

well the wife and i sat with bated breath waiting for the moment we see JC and the comments from the team....

What an anti-climax, lasted all of about 20 seconds if that....

On another note that HY Wire car looks totally way out...

The idea of taking it down to the dealers and swapping it for a 2 door sports car or a 7 seater MPV just sounds fantastic. It does look really wierd internally. Fuel as we know it will run out and this looks like a great alternative... SEA WATER... just think if you live by the coast it wont cost you anything to fill up....

Us poor city folks will have to do a weekly run to the first sea water river......

Missed it. I understand the 8 looked good but was anything positive or negative said? When will they review properly?

rael.

Rael,

we almost missed it as well , cause i blinked.

They said they loved the 4 seats and the doors, and the bird poo on the windscreen (which was supposed to be Japanese as the car was shipped over that morning (last Wednesday - which i doubt)

Other than that they didnt say much more. It did look fantastic though. (for all off 20 seconds....)

As far as I understand the situation, they will be reviewing the car on the 3rd Series, probably staring in the Autumn.

I am sure I heard JC use the word "brilliant", as to whether this was for the car in general or just the doors I don't know.

Wait a minute! They go to the trouble of getting an RX-8 into the studio and then they don't give it to the stig?

Surely they did take it out and it will be shown in next weeks (last episode)

Dont think they were allowed to take it on track? They've had several other cars in studio and not tracked them.

Hope they do next week but I cant see it happening, prolly as posted will happen in autumn.

I agree the slot was poor, the bit with the uncreasable shirt was longer and i saw that on a T.World type show a few years ago.

It seemed to sensationalise the fact that it had "just landed from Japan" in reality it has been in the country with about 3 other cars foar a week or so now being prepped to UK spec ahead of the press launch in wales in a week or so's time.
I was told the reason that they didn't drive it was because Mazda simply don't have enough of these cars to risk having one written off or damaged ahead of the press launch.

I find it somwhat confusing that it wasn't even a 360 degree camera flyby of the car exterior and they didn't even venture inside the car.As a product of considerable innovation - Rotary engine, suicide doors, true 4 seater sports coupe i really felt they would have given it more airtime instead of the fillers used in other parts of the show. If I was Mazda i'd be thinking it was hardly worth the effort.

On a slightly different point I have watched the clip numerous times (sky +) to see the paint job and it looks brilliant as do all the phot's elsewher that I have seen. The thing that confuses me is the paint sample/swatch that I saw at the Bristol event looked so much darker and nothing like the bright red seen on the pics but more like a Claret red??

I'm not suprised that they didn't spend much time with the car.

As they were not allowed to drive it, why bother showing much else.

The heart of any car review is what it is like to drive. Once you've got that done, then you can look at quality of interior etc.

Without the drive it would seem a bit silly for them to do much else. It would have been nice to see JC climb into the back of it though (easier that getting into that motorbike thing!)

I might be wrong but, I'm sure Mazda are not allowing any testing of the car prior to the official press launch.

The STIG will just have to make his way to North Wales.

Also, I have a friend who lives in North Wales (poor chap) and he called over the weekend to say that he (thought) he saw a couple of RX8's on the road. (grey and red)

He said they were stunning!

Cheers

I think this is due to the red mica paint. In all the pictures I have seen of the car indoors under very bright lights or in sunshine it looks quite orangy. Whereas under more subdued lighting or cloudy conditions it looks much darker.

I actually prefer the darker colour - I think it looks classy and restrained.

The 'outside' blood red is the better colour and my initial instinctive choice but for rthe fact that; a) it turns orange at the slighest hint of sunlight and b) I drive and park in London.

Did anyone else hear the word 'tackie' mentioned in discussion of the interior red/ black colour combination? :D

The word "tacky" was not mentioned. The fact is that he didn't say much but what he liked was the doors.

"brilliant, we like these here at topgear".

Let's hope when they get to drive it they like it. All things considered, I can't see any reason why they won't love it.
