Interesting piece in today's NY Times. Seems more and more Boomer women are choosing "mid-life crisis" vehicles, among them, the RX-8. ;)

"Vehicle registration records compiled by Mark A. Pauze, a consultant at R. L. Polk, which tracks car registration figures, show that the number of women over 45 who purchased cars in the niche known as "mid-sized sporty," which includes two-door models like the Mazda RX-8 (sic) and the Chrysler Crossfire, is up 277 percent since 2000. Among women of 45 and over earning at least $100,000, smaller luxury cars like the BMW 3 Series and the Audi A4 are up 93 percent since 2000, Mr. Pauze said. Full-size pickups are up 310 percent."

I imagine younger women would drive the RX-8 too, except they can't afford it so they buy used V6 Mustangs and automatic Miatas.

There's nothing wrong with driving a chick car. Drive a restored musclecar and you'll quickly notice that the most interested demographic who wants to come up to you and ask about it is middle aged men. :(

Reminds me of a friend who traded his Ferrari Testarosa for a Jaguar XK-8. When I asked why, he said, "Well, I got the Ferrari to attract women, but what I found was that it mainly attracted 12 year old boys." :)

Well, thank God I don't fit that demographic. (I was only 44 when I bought mine.) :D

Yeah, I had some guy at work tell me when I bought the car, "gee, you must be going thru a midlife crisis". And Baron, what you said was exactly what I told him: that after all these years of working my ass off, I could finally go out and afford to buy myself whatever I wanted (okay, within SOME reason). At least I can say with a modicum of pride that I've never owned a minivan or SUV. And this demographic I can live with! Funny thing - there's another "lady in crisis" around the corner from us who drives a Crossfire!

I liked it better when not as many women knew about the 8. :p
It was just us enthusiast chicks, then.

I'm only midlife crisis-ing if i'm planning on dying at 60!

I have an RX-8 *and* a Honda Odyssey. I must be a manly man, chick magnet.

Actually, the Odyssey is my wife's vehicle. And she drives it whenever she wants. And I wash it for her. Shit, I was *this* close to the manly man thing.
