View Full Version : Which city has the worst drivers?
shelleys_man_06 06-10-2005, 04:48 PM I'm conducting my own survey since recently, I've been finding myself stuck in traffic, because my engineering econ class ends at 6:00 PM. Which city in your opinion has the worst drivers?
I've been to LA, San Francisco, New York, Manila, Taipei, to name a few, but I don't think the courtesy is as bad as in Houston. Personally, I think we (Houston) have the worst drivers, ranging from stupid teenagers, to soccer moms, to old blind people who had been given a DL. Seriously, I don't see how you can get in an accident on the freeway. It's going in ONE DIRECTION! Bullshit.

TRU681 06-10-2005, 05:05 PM We have plenty of tourists & people that are not from the San Francisco area that are horrible drivers who does not know how to read street signs. They people can't read or don't understand ONE WAY STREET sign, almost got hit a couple of times, had to honk a few times before that person started to slow down. We have tons of one way streets, narrow 2 ways, 2 way becoming one way all of a suuden so it kinda suck here. Also the streets in SF, CA is pretty much f**ked up everywhere(pot holes, uneven streets, road construction everywhere trying to fix the road but it'll never get done) except certain rich neighborhoods like Saint Francis Woods,Marina, Pacific Heights & it's one reason I don't consider lowering my 8. Oh yeah, we have tons of grandmas & grandpas going 5-10 miles an hour!

It's the old chinese people in hats that cause all the problems.
SERIOUSLY.

I could imagine that. Most of the chinese people who live in Canada are retired from Hong Kong & migrate to Canada because it's cheaper to live there than US.

Rotarian_SC 06-10-2005, 05:58 PM South Carolina has some pretty crazy drivers, and is one of the top three most likely states for people to have a car crash in, but I'd say the worst city is Atlanta. It's not because there are slow drivers, but because you basically have 4-6 lanes each way going about 90mph bumper to bumper. That is a very unpleasant experience. Plus, some of the drivers in Atlanta are literally crazy. I was there once in a bus, and I looked down into the car next to me, and the decently redneck driver the Ford pickup had a Desert Eagle in his cupholder.
Blaaz 06-10-2005, 06:02 PM San Francisco. One of the most dangerous cities for pedestrians. Muni drivers that run over people, pedestrians that ignore signals, crazy taxi drivers (notice how the original crazy taxi video game looks like SF?), motorcyclist and scooters. Top it off with bicycle messengers that ignore all traffic laws. We have the old chinese people in hats too.

I gotta agree with that one. On a recent trip through Atlanta I was amazed at how many crazed drivers there were there. No other city I've ever driven in makes me more nervous than Atlanta.

I'd have to agree. Charleston has outgrown it's roads, half the drivers seem to be 60+ and have an alarming tendency to change lanes without looking. 75% of the highway travelers use the left lane. If I had a gun in my cupholder, i'd be tempted to use it at least once a day. These people drive me crazy. I used to be a rage free driver, but after living 4.5 years in Jacksonville, and another year here, I think i've lost it ;) .
No More Oldsmobiles 06-10-2005, 06:53 PM District of Columbia.
Take stressed-out commuters, add a huge population of self-important, me-first power freaks, mix liberally with tourists who aren't familiar with the area and drivers from other countries who aren't familiar with U.S. laws, and throw them onto lousy, crowded, confusing, antiquated roads. The terrorists should have bombed the Beltway and done us all a favor.

Anyone who has been there doesn't need an explaination. Anyone who hasn't....you are very very lucky. I DREAD driving to work every morning, and thats even before rush hour.

Dude, DC is the absolute worst. We have so many people here from different civilizations and cultures it makes for a literal mixing pot of driving styles. The taxi drivers a bad cuz they're from all the lawless countries, but then since they're taxi drivers you have to add in the f-you factor as well. I think there's an unspoken understanding between taxi drivers here and the rest of us: f-you, I'm gonna cut you off, and f-you, I'm gonna cut you off. But taxi drivers actually aren't the worst. I actually think the worst drivers around here are the Americans. They're the ones that have the least patience and always have the road rage. I suppose it's understandable, I mean, usually the Americans aren't even from this area. They're from bumb-f texas or some crap like that where there's never any traffic. Once they get here they're so not used to it they just crack and freak out. Everything around here is so spread out, yet so populated you can make a plan to be somewhere in an hour, but it ends up being 1 1/2 hours cuz you end up in traffic with all the rubber-neckers checking out the latest fender bender (which usually isn't all that spectacular), or worse, the cop on the side of the road with his flashers on just sitting there. But the problem is that it's so unpredictable that usually you just have to expect to be late.
I say DC cuz first you got volume, next you got impatient drivers who aren't used to all the typical delays.
No More Oldsmobiles 06-10-2005, 10:09 PM Plus a lot of people in the D.C. area have commutes that last hours, with very few alternate routes to take. A lot of rage builds up.
RXGr8 06-10-2005, 10:21 PM Plus a lot of people in the D.C. area have commutes that last hours, with very few alternate routes to take. A lot of rage builds up.
You got that right. I'm one of the fortunate few who goes the opposite the majority of the flow in the morning. But every year I see it getting worse and worse! And when it's really bad I'll take an alternative route, but about 50% of the time it ends up being just as bad. It's a crap shoot.
Lemme tell ya, we got so much political bickering around here, nothing gets done. If we had the kind of metro system say NYC has, things would be soooo much better (NYCers shutup, I'm talking about expanse, not reliability). But the only metro system we got is really only centralized around DC, not the outer areas. You wanna take the bus? Go for it, but if you want to get to where you need to go, you're out of luck. You'll have to walk a mile from the stop first, and dodge cars too, cuz sometimes there's no sidewalks!
Monterey Park, CA.
Probably has the highest population density of old Chinese people (with cars) in the entire world.
guy321 06-11-2005, 05:44 AM GIN, Monterey park traffic is not that bad. I've driven out there. Most of those old chinese people walk ;) My cousins live there. You know Andrew ?
Anyway, I'd have to also submit FL we have the highest densities of elderly AND the population is growing at an alarming rate. The Tampa area is growing fast and only has 2 lane highways for the most part. We have some of the most dangerous roads and intersections listed every year by allstate or whomever does those polls.
I submit that the best drivers are in Manhattan. Everyone commits to thier actions, as long as you do what you're supposed to so will they. Sure there's the occasional honk or 1 finger salute but it is usually for people who take way too long to act (more than a split second).
draco067 06-11-2005, 09:16 AM I second (or third, etc) the votes for the DC metropolitan area
neit_jnf 06-11-2005, 11:19 AM Bayamon, PR...
unpocoloco 06-11-2005, 02:36 PM I've heard the New Orleans is one of the worst. Relatives say: Odds of getting in an accident by an insured driver = pretty low!
They're from bumb-f texas or some crap like that where there's never any traffic.
Ya. You apperently have never driven in Texas. We get stupid people that move here that drive like crap as well.
shelleys_man_06 06-12-2005, 10:18 AM I might have to agree with Beast here. Orlando has shit for traffic. The roads are always under construction, and it's been like that since I went there in 1993. Oh yeah, and their basketball team sucks.
tiggerlee 06-12-2005, 01:50 PM I thought this thread was "which city has the worst drivers" not which city has the most traffic?
For the record the top three cities for traffic congestion are: Los Angeles,San Francisco, and D.C. with Atlanta coming in fourth. As far as "the worst drivers" that's subjective.
According to Allstate Insurance Texas has some of the worst.http://austin.bizjournals.com/austin/stories/2005/06/06/daily25.html
shelleys_man_06 06-12-2005, 11:50 PM Yeah it is subjective. Also, this is my thread. Shut your mouth. Nah I'm kidding. :D
Anyway, Allstate isn't too far from the truth. Good find.
rx8wannahave 06-13-2005, 07:42 AM I'm from Miami and every time I go back to visit (mainly for the food and beaches...lol) I relearn the fact that drivers down south are REALLY bad, probably the worst.
lol
guy321 06-13-2005, 07:53 AM What are you guys considering as bad drivers? For me, it means people who are:
Travelling too fast and errating in an improper vehicle.
Not aware of thier surroundings. (look in the rearview and side mirrors sometime *atleast*)
Blatantly disrupting traffic to enforce "the laws" (vigilantism)
Not making and committing to decisions.
Blatantly Ignoring right of ways, stop signs/lights, etc. (It's amazing to me the number of people that will not drive 1 mile an hour faster than the speed limit, but will run through a red light)
One thing I see often down here is when the elderly make a left hand turn onto a divided road and they turn onto the LEFT side of the median.. then they shit a brick when they realize cars are coming AT them!
Feras 06-13-2005, 08:28 AM all ive heard for the most part is wa wa the drivers in my city are the worst. Me I travel a lot and ive come to the realizations the only drivers on the roads that arent asshats are ME!!!
I got to say asshat, woo!!!!
guy321 06-13-2005, 08:46 AM im not an asshat
MTLbroker 06-13-2005, 08:57 AM Montreal has you all beat. Everyone here has attitude. Old people, young people, soccer moms, commuters, tourists. Throw in wome woefully inadequate roadways, unfinished beltways, potholes that can swallow a big mini or a small Beetle. Throw in some wierd idiogram road signs and French only signs, reserved lanes, lanes that change direction daily, you get the idea.
In fact in the rest of the province, right hand turns on red are legal. The exception is the island of Montreal. Pedestrians fear for their lives!
guy321 06-13-2005, 08:59 AM Yeah, we get alot of people from montreal in the winter time. They do suck! They all drive around 10 mph below the limit and act like they are lost or something.

DreRX8 06-13-2005, 09:43 AM Well I don't know about Houston having the worst drivers--but they sure do like to back into parked RX8s around here http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=63749
241Commuter 06-13-2005, 10:25 AM Here in Orange County, the vicinity around this massive Liesure World project. 30,000 old folk (maybe it just seems like that many) tootling around in Oldsmobile and Cadillac land-yachts with poor reflexes, poor eyesight, poor hearing, and declining cognitive abilities. There's holy hell to pay if you try to take away one of their licenses.
So you got my mom who rips through the diamond lane at 80 mile per hour, bouncing from side to side like a wheel out of balance. And you got my dad who sticks to the diamond lane at 65 mph holding up huge lines of traffic behind him because, by God, he's going the speed limit and that's his right.
I once got a call from mom's cell phone, execpt she didn't know she pushed the button. All I could hear was, "honey, you're on the wrong side of the street. Honey, move over...." this went on for about 3 minutes. Typical stuff for that end of the world.
MadRonin 06-13-2005, 10:44 AM Also the streets in SF, CA is pretty much f**ked up everywhere(pot holes, uneven streets, road construction everywhere trying to fix the road but it'll never get done) except certain rich neighborhoods like Saint Francis Woods,Marina, Pacific Heights & it's one reason I don't consider lowering my 8.
Sorry, you haven't seen potholes until you've driven through PA after a long winter. We have streets which look perfectly normal (for PA, that is) before winter, and afterwards they look like a mine field. PA has more roads per square mile than any other state in the country. We're also in the top ten for most dagerous intersections in the nation.
I love my 8 and I love PA, but I hate driving my 8 on the majority of the roads here. Whenever I come home from a trip where I'm leaving one of the states which borders PA, I don't even need a sign or mile marker to tell me I'm in my home state. The roads tell me immediately. They're that bad here. :o
Drivers on the other hand, well, the worst ones I've ever encountered is in Massachusetts. They just don't give a fuck. They change lanes without warning. Stop for no reason. Go slow when they should be going fast, and vice versa. Anytime I see someone down here with a MA tag, I immediately get as far away from them as possible. D.C. and New York are pretty bad too, but Mass takes the cake.
valpac 06-13-2005, 10:50 AM let me just say, if you are impeding my progress, than you are a bad driver and must pull to the side immediately. And just what is an asshat anyway?
Hornet 06-13-2005, 08:07 PM My take is, I've driven in Mass, PA, NYC, NJ, and DC (all parts of the beltway) and my opinion is that DC is the worst! If it rains expect your travel time to increase more than it should. As mentioned before, if there is an accident on the opposite side of the freeway prepare to be delayed by the major abundance of rubberneckers. The drivers are from about everywhere there to include Texas and Mass! I know some of you probably don't agree with my opinion but I have met a person who's pet peeve was edging into the intersection while waiting to turn (even if there is no turn light)! What that works out to during a busy time of day is someone who can't make a left turn because he can't get time to cross the opposite lanes or someone who darts out in front of oncoming traffic because they aren't going to just let you cross! Also of note there are parts of Maryland (we'll just say DC's suburbs) that have problems with kids (teens) stealing cars and they do drive across borders between MD, DC, VA and we all know what joyriding car thieves are like (we'll just say they don't care because it's not their car anyway).
So DC is my final answer!
MTLbroker 06-14-2005, 01:33 PM Yeah, we get alot of people from montreal in the winter time. They do suck! They all drive around 10 mph below the limit and act like they are lost or something.
Forget winter time. Montreal during F1 week is the worse. Every civic owner thinks he/she is driving for BAR. Idiots zipping around everywhere at breakneck speeds - as if they had a virtual lobotomy.
