View Full Version : "So, how fast can that thing go?"

Here is a short story...

So I'm driving home and I hear someone yell at me and I look to my side. I see two shirtless, tattooed, and pierced guys driving a minivan that looks like it’s being used as a work truck/mini van. The passenger asks me:

“So, how fast is that thing?”

I replied…”Fast enough” and smiled, but I think he did not understand or thought I did not hear him. So he asked me again and I replied with the same.

I’m guessing that he wanted me to gun it and show him but I was not in the mood (and cops hide in that area) nor interested in getting a ticket acting like a teenager.

I know he was not looking to race me but really just wanted to see what the 8 could do, so did I do the right thing?

LOL, poor guys probably were working hard that day and wanted a little thrill since I guess they liked the 8…oh well.

At that second point you should have winked at them and blown kisses.

I usually say 500 million miles per hour. They talk shit to me after i say that, but who cares?

Infact, once a toyota corolla with 4 passegers + driver started talkin to me. The passenger in the front says 'Wanna race?' And i say: 'Why do you want to race me when theres 5 people in your car?' Needless to say, if the honda civic with 2 big huge bastards next to me didnt see that, i would have gotten jumped by 5 people in the corolla :p

p.s it wasnt even a corolla-S !!

LOL...the RX8 acts more like an exotic car than anything I've ever driven, that's a cool part of living with the 8 but at times it can be annoying.

I also just had "the how many cylinders does it have" comment even after I said "it's a Rotary engine NOT a piston engine", but he was an old buddy of mines so I'll forgive. LOL

Oh...and at the latest gather of my old church friends (I have not seen alot of them in about 3 years) they all loved my 8...my girl-FRIEND said I could not leave until she saw the inside, lol.

I say 184mph. Just like in the video when they had an 8 top out at that speed on the dyno. :)

As for questions about cylinders and such, I usually respond with something like, "It doesn't have any cylinders. Or valves, or pistons, or anything else like that. Just 3 moving parts: two triangles and an output shaft". At that point, they either say "oh, it's a rotary!", or just nod, smile, and walk away with a confused look on their faces. :D

184mph with those aerodynamics? I think not.
Nice wish though. You need about another 100-150whp. Then you "might" get there.

It is nice when people oggle over your car though.

I think I'm going to buy a small model rotary engine and put some charts in my trunk so they leave knowing what I'm talking about...lol...

Try explaining it to a bunch of drunk frat boys while you're dunk too.

I did a great job though.

Well these were well educated drunks. But don't try to get me to say the proper name for the shape of the housing. I can't do it. Hell, I can't remember what it is half the time...

Aerodynamics dont have anything to do with top speed on a dyno... and yes, it was video taped topping out at 184mph on a dyno.

People never ask me shit about my car. :(

Might have something to do with the fact that I'm wearing a t-shirt that says "Go ahead, ask me anything......and I'll eat you." :p

The front wheels arent spinning. You cant claim top speed on a Dyno the same as top speed on a track if the front wheels arent moving. What if the PCM reads the speed from the FRONT wheels to determine fuel cut off?

Happens to me all the time too, at least once a day someone says something about the car. I really love being on the road and seeing people in other cars pointing and talking when i ride by. i have had some nice cars but never one with this much oggling!

I am 27 and single, the women really like it, i really like that too! :)

I think the 8 would have gotten me into trouble if I was single...lol, but you always have to be weary of the HS girls that seem to have HOE'd up alot since I was in HS. LOL

Sorry...for that...lol

Lol, I know. But, it's all in good fun. ;) :D

And Synistyr, thanks for posting the vid!

I get compliments/questions/stares all the time myself. I just had a friend out with me the other day for dinner. When we stopped, she said to me, "Everytime we hang out, I keep looking around and seeing all these people gawking and staring at us, and have no clue what they're looking at. Then, I remember we're in your car!". :D

All the other residents in my Appt building come out when I start my FD up. But I think its from the fumes...

I was refering to reality and not a dyno. I know you can hit whatever on a dyno, but real life is different. Too many factors...

lol...yeah, that happens too. What I find cool is that "old timers" stare at my 8 like if it's a classic car they rememberd when they were young or something. They really find (I think) those curves on our 8 "classic".

My wife enjoy's the looks when she is with me too, cept from the woman...lol

I get comments all the time about the RX-8, but the one that comes up most is "is it as fast as it looks?"

So i just respond that I'm still breaking it in.

I just saw your vidio, great. One question, did you do something to overide the top seed limiter or did the car just go up to speed on its own.

Again great vidio

I've had my car over 160 ( 167mph IIRC ) actually driving on a road late at night. there's not a limiter. that's as fast as I could get it going and it was crawling to get there past 140.
