View Full Version : Oh no!! This sounds like us
Zoom49 07-11-2003, 12:06 AM Found this in todays Autoweek. I believe and have heard
rumors that a similar issue exists with our RX-8's. The EPA
wont release the cars until it is resolved and Mazda cant
tell us anything because they dont even know when the
EPA will allow them to be released!!!!
RX-Nut 07-11-2003, 12:07 AM DOH!
DOH!
DOOOOOOOOOOOH!
You know if Mazda would just tell me this was the problem, I'd be the first one on the phone to every congressional representative I can think of. As it is, if they won't tell me I can't help them. Do you really think the EPA has a leg to stand on under the current administration? There are enough people here that we could easily make enough noise to have a positive impact on something like this.
ibfubar2000 07-11-2003, 12:10 AM i think we found our answer!!! dont like it but it does make sense with all the rumors.!!

mazda has no control over the epa ratngs. it is all up to the government to release the cars. mazda can not sale the cars until they are epa standard! i talked to our mitsbishi rep today he said that mits had the same problem witht he first year of the mits eclipse turbo, took 2 months for the governmrnt to ok it. their are very STIFF fines if a corp sales a car without epa ratings!!

EXACTLY MY POINT, tell me that's the issue, then the customers can apply pressure where Mazda can't. Use your constituency. How many phone calls to somebody in congress does it take before they pick up a phone and ask just what the hell the EPA is doing? NOBODY likes a congressional investigation. Kind of like the INQUISITION.
ibfubar2000 07-11-2003, 12:18 AM ok well lets assume that is the problem. who do we call first? do you have any phone numbers? lets all cal the congress tommoorrow!
Puppy1 07-11-2003, 12:24 AM UGH!
I'd love to call them, it's pretty easy to find the contact numbers off Google or something, but no way in hell am I going to call my representative without my ducks in line. Gotta stay credible.
great body of info about calling congress:

sburkett 07-11-2003, 12:28 AM Shouldn't this B.S. be in the "conspiracy theory" thread?
Did Mazda tell any of you that the car would be here by now? I'm still right on track for the third week of July, when Mazda said it would arrive. Or should I assume there is some big "issue" because our cars aren't a week early?

I really don't know. What I do know is cars have been in the US since 17 June. You tell me how freakin long it takes to install port options, inspect, and truck to a dealer 11 miles from the port?
MaRX8 07-11-2003, 12:31 AM Hmm, it could be an EPA thing. But my feeling is that they are waiting for a Promotional launch with advertising. The problem being that the advertising probably isn't slated to start until a certian date. July 15th? Mid month and payday for most people. Also when advertising ad's, and promo's change. That's my current feeling on the situation. I could be entirely wrong about the date of the advertising campain.

JJFlash 07-11-2003, 12:42 AM I posted this yesterday, but since we're theorizing again...my dealer said my car is on the train to Woodhaven, MI (options already istalled) and was expected to arrive there the end of this week or over the weekend and he has heard the trucks will roll next week with expectations that his first 2 cars will arrive Wed-Fri of next week. Hopefully, he's right, then it's not an EPA issue and just a "coordinated launch" issue. He's been really straight up with me on everything...even asked me to take him a ride next week since only the mechanic is allowed behing the wheel when it gets there. Either he's uniformed, telling a fib, or he's right on the money; I hope the latter is the right one.
You're not really going to rice it up are you?
ibfubar2000 07-11-2003, 12:48 AM me? yes i have the aftermarket wing and underbody lights in my garge all ready. and the tech at work knows someone who does the side graphics. i personally like the ricer look..

wow, okay i just don't see it, but okay. i actually am pretty tempted to put some lights under it too. never done the research to understand how that's done and how much abuse it can take.
as a nod to the thread, what EPA impact would extra rice have?
ibfubar2000 07-11-2003, 12:58 AM well im going to do minimum engine work, just mostly cosmetic work. 10" spoiler blue flames coming from the fender black thn going down the sides over the rear tire and outof the front on the car across the hood, blue undercar light, blue lighting rods in engine area and under the seats and dash. and custom wires and hoses whatever can be seen under the hood, looking for someone that does high heat paint or decals for the black plastic pieces under the hood. primary colors yellow with blue to match my bird (see avatar)
ibfubar2000 07-11-2003, 01:01 AM also im not going to install anything until i see how it looks first. but have seen a picture somewhere here withthe high 10" spoiler and liked it, somebody did it on photoshop or something.
Toadman 07-11-2003, 01:02 AM Bwahahaha! :D
The 8 already passed DOT, EPA, NHTSA crash test, and 50-state smog rules.
You're talking Porsche there, not a veteran Japanese import. ;)
that sounds like quite the plan. i think if i did flames i'd want to do them in black 1/2 tones or something, but I can see the blue working. maybe i'll make it out there once you've got it done, i'd like to see it. i really can't believe it's an EPA issue.
ibfubar2000 07-11-2003, 01:18 AM this is the blue underlights i got:

StealthTL 07-11-2003, 01:31 AM Fuguy, you already know 'you-da-man'.
And we have all benefitted/appreciated what you have done for the V.I.N.s........
But don't you think it's time for a check on reality? .....I take it you have never heard back from your 'mazda' contact?
One call, no details, just some assurances that 'if we build it they will come'?
A misleading delivery promise, and an assurance that 'they are out there, listening'?
Do you start to believe you were misled?....Lied to?...Appeased?
Please don't mis-interpret this, I'm just pointing out the frailty of the information.....

ibfubar2000 07-11-2003, 01:34 AM actually i was hoping if i was nice enough they would call me back with more info whoever they were. it was a nice conversation though we talked for about 20 minutes. would liike to just talk some more. very polite and nice person.

at times i do think it was a joke or something. but i like to think it was real. i will know for sure on friday.
Jabok82 07-11-2003, 02:10 AM It seems to me that Mazda has wasted a lot of money on the RX-8 advertising already. They first did the X-Men RX-8 product placement that cost big bucks. That movie is way out of peoples minds by now. Now they have been putting ads in tons of Magazines for months, still no cars. I would think that they were aiming to have the car out sooner to take better advantage of their ads and the movie tie in. Oh well.
At least we got nice books and coffee mugs
Coffee mugs, what coffee mugs? We in the UK got the nice book but no mugs (although we are mugs willing to wait so long). When were these handed out and what are they like?
rael
Racer X-8 07-11-2003, 07:30 AM Has anybody actually seen any leaving any of the ports? Surely, if EPA is not happy, they would be confined to the ports.
I'm not talking about what the dealerships said.
DID ANYONE SEE ANY OF THEM LEAVE A PORT?
Scouts? Oh, scouts???

Two out of four advertising pushes have happended. The third was US driving our cars everywhere. Marketing has no control over magazine deadlines. For the full page and inside cover ad placements they have been doing, probably submitted up to six months ago. Agreed the best use of the movie tie-in would be cars waiting at the dealer when the people left the theater. But how long before the assembly line was even built did that get filmed? Remember is wasn't even a real RX-8!
The fourth phase would be TV which seems to have been planned for the new fall show season based on other information. No need to go full speed till there are cars waiting to be sold. And TV doesn't require the long lead time of print publications. The commercials are done and waiting to go on air.
aar_eks_8 07-11-2003, 12:00 PM after reading stuff in this forum for a month now, i finally decided to join the discussion...i had put down a deposit on a ti 6spd, which is expected to be here in the first shipment....
if mazda reps are indeed reading what is posted in this forum, and if the truth is there's nothing wrong with the vehicle and its the epa that's holding up things, why can't they come out and say it here....
TreknMazda 07-11-2003, 12:21 PM Let's face it, is there really anything Mazda could tell us about the reason for the delay that would make us cancel our pre-orders? I doubt it. But by next week this will all be forgotten as we drive around in our new cars! :D
TybeeRX-8 07-11-2003, 03:09 PM First, IBUFAR2000 won the bidding for the spoiler. Now he'll have to pay up, but it was cheap at twice the price.
Second, how do any of you know that you haven't read something from Mazda about this delay? The word I have is that some Mazda reps are participating in this forum, but will remain anonymus so they don't get e ton of flack.
I think that what Ibufar said about EPA requirements, safety requirements, etc., already being met is accurate. There may be something else (I was told that some stuff, e.g., owner's manuals, were missing on some of the cars). I also had a thought about jacks. I didn't order the spare kit, but does the car come with a jack regardless? Maybe the jacks are missing? Maybe it's a coordinated release? Maybe they are all right-hand drive and they are waiting for conversion kits? Or, just maybe some of the port installed options were late arriving? About two weeks ago, I was still being told by my dealer that they were unable to order accessories, e.g., bra, car cover and some other stuff.
So, it could be any number of things, but I don't think there is a problem with the car. A MNAO rep, in fact, told me that the two cars being driven across the US were performing as intended.
Speculate away! It won't make them get here any faster than Mazda wants them in our hands. I, for one, appreciate the concern for making sure they are "right" the first time. I don't want mine back at the dealer for fixes for days after I get it!
P00Man 07-11-2003, 03:21 PM there are no problems with their cars, 3ROTOR already has his...just go to the "first us owner" thread...
if there was a problem with the cars, i doubt that hed have his...
