View Full Version : Greddy turbo - info on removing DONGLE
adrian-1 06-03-2005, 07:47 PM EDIT: DO NOT REMOVE YOUR DONGLE. BENNY FROM GREDDY HAS SAID IT'S AN IMPORTANT PART FOR THE EMANAGE TO BE ABLE TO ADD FUEL.
CHECK MY POST ON PAGE 2 FOR THE FULL EXPLANATION.
The dongle is part of the greddy wiring harness, there's actually 2 dongles but you only remove the one that says "rx8" on it.
Quoting Mazdamaniac it's purpose is to "pass the regular temp signal through until it is triggered by the "VTEC" map in the E-Manage.
At that time, it substitutes the temp signal for a resistance that is equal to about 160°F, fooling the ECU into thinking the car is warming up.
Not really a particularly elegant solution and, as noted earlier, one that doesn't work on every car."
I was having hesitation issues between shifts and the driveability wasn't smooth. After removing this dongle, my hesistation problems were gone and shifting was much smoother.
Below is the procedure on how to remove the dongle.
(Attempt this at your own risk and please write down how it was initially wired before you unplug stuff, just in case it doesn't work for you.)
Again, remove the dongle ONLY is your having hesistation/bucking issues and the driveablilty is not smooth. If it drives good leave it on.

Instructions:
Remove battery cover.
Remove the ecu cover to get to the wiring harness and dongle.
-3 10mm bolts
-2 plastic snap clips on left side (if your stading at the front bumper and looking down)
-2 plastic snap-on clips holding sensors in place
Locate the dongle that says RX8_US**** (where the *'s are japanese characters)
Unplug all the wires that are connected to this dongle. Remove the dongle.
Now,
-connect the green wire to the white wire. (it's a tight fit since they're both short wires)
-connect the black wire to the black wire.
-the white and pink wire will be left unplugged. (you can see it on the right side of my picture)
DONE.
Put cover back on and test drive.
Also to note, I noticed a red wire on the harness that wasn't connected to anything. I received it from Greddy this way.
adrian-1 06-03-2005, 07:48 PM Here is the before picture that Mazdamaniac posted earlier. The wire circled is the pink/white and is left disconnected.
Edit: Added brighter before picture.
Speedrx8er 06-03-2005, 08:08 PM adrain . the green one you are refering to is it the on connected to the #2 dongle black wire?
Speedrx8er 06-03-2005, 08:11 PM dangit . the one you circle. Mine is actually yellow with gray strips.
also the ones (green, white)was connected onthe harrnas both of mine are yellow
adrian-1 06-03-2005, 08:25 PM adrain . the green one you are refering to is it the on connected to the #2 dongle black wire?
On the "RX8 DONGLE" , it's got 4 wires.
Green, White, Black, Yellow. Disconnect these.
Now the ones left over on the harness, connect green to white, black to black and the yellow was connected to a pink/white which will be left unplugged.
No idea what yellow w/ gray strips wire is.
Speedrx8er 06-03-2005, 08:27 PM hmm I don't even have a white an pink that is not connected. I do remember connecting a wire. . which one of your dongle wire are not connected to anything?
Speedrx8er 06-03-2005, 08:31 PM Ardrian , think my wiring color scheme may be different. :(
I"ll just connec the 2 yellow wire on the harness together. these used to be connected to the green and white wire on the rx8 dongle and leave the yellow with gray strip unpluge(used to be connected to the yellow wire on the rx8 dongle.. you think that is correct>
thanks

Hopefully greddy didn't change colors. I may delete this thread if that's the case. My turbo kit was the second batch and I've had it for awhile.
It sounds correct , just different colors. Whatever was connected to the green and white from the RX8 dongle go together, the one that was on the yellow is left hanging, and the blacks together.
Any chance you can snap a picture?
Speedrx8er 06-03-2005, 09:03 PM Adrian, Don't delete the thread. I found it very helpful. Just the color are diff.
I got Mine from the rx8 garage about a month ago. Yes i'll take a snap shoot of it.
Also, could you find out which dongle wire(i am guesing #2) color that is not connected to anything:
I don't have a red wire not connected to anything

I'm not sure what your asking, all the wires on the other dongle are connected.
Speedrx8er 06-03-2005, 09:15 PM sorry i ment harness. hmm it appears I don't have any red wire left over.
THanks Adrian, I got it all connected. I'll go for a test drive. I"ll post the pic later tonight.
Speedrx8er 06-04-2005, 02:00 AM Here is the pic of my wire color
adrian-1 06-04-2005, 12:55 PM Looks correct. I guess they did change the colors.
Did you test drive it yet?
Speedrx8er 06-04-2005, 01:20 PM Yes, I did. Big different then before :D . Mine used to hesitate alot.
Thanks

Thank Mazdamaniac, he figured out that this was the problem on some cars.
youngpit 06-04-2005, 05:56 PM ok what do you do if you have 3 dongle's.
well I just went ahead and removed the rx-8 one and took it for a test spin, the boging went away, the backfireing subsided, and the boost still wont go above 5psi no matter what i do. running matts newest map (i think ne way if i installed it correctly) so we will see in a couple of trips to work and back.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR EVERY ONES HELP YOU GUYS/GALS are the BEST :o

No idea what the other dongle is. removing the dongle fixes the bogging, the 5psi max is another problem.
brillo 06-04-2005, 10:55 PM with the "temp dongle" installed fooling the temp sensor, did anyone see where the car idled at in terms of RPM? I'm wondering what the car does when it thinks its 160degrees.
I actually like to wire up the dongle with my canzoomer and see if I could get the same effect, anyone wanna loan me theirs? :)
Speedrx8er 06-04-2005, 10:58 PM Thank Mazdamaniac, he figured out that this was the problem on some cars.
I'll buy him a beer when if i see him. :D
Speedrx8er 06-04-2005, 11:04 PM I had 3 dongle. removed the RX8 one.. Idle is the same for me

isn't the 5 psi what greddy suppose to have out of the box?
adrian-1 06-04-2005, 11:26 PM I had 3 dongle. removed the RX8 one.. Idle is the same for me
Maybe I did have 3 dongles. I'm not sure if the other one is under the black plastic cover. It's been 2 months since I initially took it out. Took the pics a couple of days ago, but didn't look for the other dongle.
Speedrx8er 06-04-2005, 11:30 PM Adrian, Yah didn't know I had 3 until went searching for the wires. the other one was
at the bottom under the wire harness.
youngpit 06-05-2005, 10:59 AM OK Good glad to see that everyone else has 3 as well. I thought it was 7psi that greddy set.
Speedrx8er 06-06-2005, 09:23 AM hmm Didn't know about the 7 psi. I also could not get any higher then 5
Greddyturbo1 06-06-2005, 08:27 PM The 3rd dongle is for the cel code some people were getting when the car was cold, Benny is getting the new parts in for anyone who has only 2 dongles and was having problems with the cel code when cold . I have just two like about 60 of the units out there.. But I have no problems with cel codes, so I'am not going to install it.. Benny said we will have to send in the harness and they will install for us...
adrian-1 06-30-2005, 10:47 PM Benny from Greddy has said the dongle is important and shouldn't be removed. Here's his reply on what it does and why it's needed is below.
Also, if you only have 2 dongles, check his thread on how to get the 3rd dongle to get rid of the CEL. Even if you have 3 dongles and bought before June 1st, you will also probably need to be updated. The kits sold after June 1st have the updated dongle.
The temp sensor adapter is actually very important in tuning the RX-8. As some of you may know, even during wide open throttle up to mid range RPM, the RX-8 ECU is still running in closed loop operation. During closed loop operation the ECU will continually be making adjustments to reach its target air fuel ratio, which is way too lean for a turbo kit. Also the A/F sensor technology is new and advanced on this vehicle so it reacts extrememly well to rich/lean conditions to get to its target A/F, which is generally stoich (14.7 to 1). Well, with the stock ECU making adjustment around mid range RPMs, tuning the Emanage was pointless because the A/F would change and get leaner. Also I must add that the intercept point (peak boost) for this is in the range, so it is manditory that the A/F ratios are safe and adjustable at this point. We used the VTEC switch on the emanage to enable the temp sensor adapter when any positive pressure was detected from the GReddy Pressure sensor. This switch causes the ECU to think it is colder and run in open loop operation so we can make any adjustments we want without the stock ECU making adjustments to lean it out. I am sure MZM can tune it to make it run beatiful. They will call me if they have questions.

Yikes, Sure my labels are still on the wires since both of the colors are yellow.
How do we update the dongle. Send it back to Greddy?
thanks
adrian-1 07-01-2005, 12:48 PM No, he'll send you the other dongle. It's a fairly easy install. Benny's thread here. (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=65325)
Greddyturbo1 07-02-2005, 10:04 PM Hey Guys, I already installed the other Dongle this week, it was easy no sweat....
