When i bought my 1999 Civic, i didn't have car insurance proivded by Honda dealer. I hope mazda will provide us car insurance for one week or one month! i ask that because i want to drive my 8 to home by myself, even i just learn how to drive manual by useing my friend's RX-7.
If you already have insurance, I think your current policy is supposed to cover you for 30 days on new car purchases.

Surely you should arrange your insurance to start from the morning that you collect your car.

In the UK , if you get an insurance quote from Mazda themselves , they give you 30 days free just for getting the quote... Could be useful.
Just as well - the quotes were dreadful ! :)

30 days is a bit much. If you currently have auto insurance, they will cover you for 72 hours after buying yrou new or new to you car. If you are planning on purchasing a car, notify your ins. co of when you are planning on picking it up. The 72 hour grace period is for the impulse/unplanned purchase.
I know of a track insturctor who got rear ended and totalled his Porsche 911 on his way home from the dealer after waiting several weeks for a custom order.
Bottomline, the best thing to do is call your ins. co and find out their grace period. Don't get caught with your pants down. It could cost you a lot of money. And, BTW, the dealer will not provide you with any insurance. If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you.

obviously it is different in all jurisdictions but in Ontario and as far as I know most of Canada, you can't leave the lot without plates and you can't get plates without valid insurance.
Usually all it takes is a call to your insurance company with a vin # and you get your policy number over the phone or via fax. You can then take that to the licencing bureau or give it to the dealer if he is handling it and get the plates.
If you are swaping the plates with a tradein, the insurance company needs to be advised before hand, or at least the day of.
Driving without insurance is just asking for trouble, especially in a sue mad country like the US.

Man I hope there is a grace period - got my plate, no insurance needed - will phone, but I don't think I can co-ordinate 'the day of'.
