View Full Version : 8 demographics - Age
8_wannabe 07-09-2003, 10:22 PM Hi y'all. There has been a topic of discussion at the Wannabe household that I'm "too old" for this car. After all, I have to maintain my stature (not sure what that means since I'm only 5'8".) Of course, I believe you're as young as you feel and besides which it's a Great American Tradition that middle age married men gotta get a red sports car. So here I am. But to further bolster my position with the Boss, I'd like to do a poll and collect some demographics on 8 buyers. To keep it honest, please respond only if you've really, truly ordered... not "seriously thinking about it." This should give me ammo to defend myself -- or pull the rug out from under me, depending on how it comes out.
8_wannabe 07-09-2003, 10:29 PM uh oh... this ain't shaping up good for me. Maybe all the oldsters are already in bed and they'll weigh in in the morning. ;)

Rev It Up 07-09-2003, 10:48 PM OK I hit my mid life crisis at the age of 36 when I purchased my third RX-7 (so my wife says) and now I am 39 and have my RX-8 on order. Do I feel older, Hell yes, would I change anything about life right now,Hell NO, I've worked damn hard to get to where I am in life and if I cant enjoy one of lifes greatest pleasures(my new RX-8) than screw em all!!!!!! If your family thinks your too old for the car thats their damn problem, if its what you want to drive and you can afford it, the case is CLOSED!!!

Thanks, bro. I'm just a humble member, not an exalted senior member so these were all before my time. Looks like these polls pop up every 4-6 months so maybe it's time again. Now we have enough data points to do trend analysis. I'll give that a shot once these numbers tally up a bit.

Yeah, damn straight -- I like ur attitude. Where u live anyway? you're invited to my place one of these days as my trial attorney. That 8 is soooo mine!!
MaRX8 07-10-2003, 12:33 AM The problem with the age poll. The majority of people who are over 35-40 didn't really grow up with computers. It's still a new fangled thing for some, and for some of those to find a web forum to talk about the RX-8 is a somewhat unusal situation. That doesn't mean they aren't interested in the RX-8 any less. It's just not as common to be online reading web forums about cars, with the older generation.
"Not trying to create a debate" just my opinion...
RX-8 Zoomster 07-10-2003, 01:46 AM I'm 45. I'm at the bottom of that age group. I hate being grouped into ages 9 yrs older than me. I feel younger than 45. Don't that count? :D
rxeightr 07-10-2003, 09:44 AM 44 here, and the RX-8 is certainly my mid-life crisis answer to FUN:cool:

44 here, and the RX-8 is certainly my mid-life crisis answer to FUN:cool: I'm 40 and just got divorced. At my age you know it's a midlife crisis if you are buying the Red/Red. Since I got Titanium/Tan, it must not be. :D
rotorian 07-10-2003, 10:19 AM I'm almost 48! (although I'm told I look 10 years younger HaHa) I agree with the comments about computers, but that obviously doesn't apply to some of us.
My wife has given up on trying to get me to"Act my age" (what does that mean anyhow?)
I think there is much less of a generation gap than there was years ago.
That's my take anyhow.
Bulldog6670 07-11-2003, 06:46 PM I'm 49 and probably in the top 5% of the age bracket (or bottom depending on how you look at it). We raised 4 kids and we always had to drive around in full size cars or vans. I did get an '85 IROQ Z when I turned 40 (mid-life crisis) and had a ball with it. I still have it and it's in great shape, but my yougest bascically took it over. He's 21.
Anyway, we were in the market for a new car. My wife, the sweet thing she is, told me to get something absolutely impractical and fun to drive. And she meant it. We looked at everything from Corvettes to BMW's. Just fell in love with the RX-8 even though I never really saw one in person. The more I read on it, the more I want it.
TybeeRX-8 07-11-2003, 07:46 PM Let's just say I'm one of the three! Owning an RX-8 will be new for me. I've been through all kinds of cars, sports and otherwise. Currently, I have an '02 Miata 6sp SE which I'll keep along with the wife's G500 (love it, hate to drive it). My philosophy is that you only live once (as far as I know!) and why not enjoy if you can afford it. I've driven the Z4 and was disappointed in the overall product for $40k+; the 350Z which was really neat but suffers from the same drawback as the Miata...less luggage space for long distance travel. I've owned the early SLK:o , a '94 Miata :D, a new Beetle TDI:) and so on...3 other Benzes:D :o :D, 2 BMWs:o :p , a Renault Turbo Fuego:D , an MGB:(. It never stops! But the RX-8 eliminates that concern with it's back seat...and you can haul two more around after you unload. Only this year, I started to autocross my Miata and will likely do the same with the RX-8. I love to drive and assume you do too. In the past 18 months, I've driven about 37k miles, including a round trip coast-to-coast last year. I don't know what this all means, but if you really want the car, tell your wife that I said "go get it" It's a bargain!
Racer X-8 07-11-2003, 10:38 PM I'm 29. My birthdate says I'm 20 years older though.
My wife keeps telling me that we have a daughter that's 29 too.
<<<<< All I know is, that's my brother's car in my avatar, and he's 2 years older than me! I still have some serious catching up to do!;)

I am with you as part of the over 55. I almost bought a Miata when they first came out but they didn't have the power to even be worth considering. I was driving a Mazda 323 2.0L turbo ( yes they had them in 1988 and only made 2000 of them)that blew its doors off. The RX8 stands for the best in over all driving experience.
spypondtom 09-03-2003, 08:51 PM Another old b*stard here. 53 yrs of living on the planet. I needed a mazda friend for my 93le miata(a car full of smiles) and my green gt 8 is a new family member. My generous wife adores the car. I have seen only one other 8 on the road here in the boston area.
allstate 09-03-2003, 09:47 PM 24 yrs here. Just graduated college and my wife and I just got new jobs. She is so awesome for letting me have this toy!
