View Full Version : HOW TO BUY A RX8 . . . I know
RotoRooter 07-08-2003, 07:46 PM Wait less time then everyone else.
I ordered mine 2/19 and got placed on 2nd Allocation. My Vin is 1933 and it is officially on the water.
Not bad, but both my buddies beat this . . . one in Clearwater, Fl the other in Jersey. They simply checked the arriving VINS using the hack trick that was posted a week ago, then called and asked for the general sales manager of the local dealer. They then simply said they work in the auto biz and know the VINs that arriving to their dealership. They pick their exact car and give the corresponding VIN. Apparently what the dealers have done is split pre-orders and inventory orders in half. Pre-orders to make quick sales and profit, get the word out, sell cars fast so they get more, stir up interest, get the loyals business, develop a "mystique" about the car as THE CAR OF THE MOMENT TO HAVE. REMEMBER THE MIATA AND THE PT CRUISER (people acted like they were ferrari's). Anyway, after you stir the pot of interest, you have to have available 8s. The trick is most dealers have too many "unassigned or available" 8's for whatever reason. I.E this is the perfect time to call up and request a MSRP no bullshit deal on a VIN 3000 or less. Go for it. Both my buddies now have exact cars they want with VINs lower than mine. They will have their car before they even register on the site!!!!
BTW: PM me is you live anywhere near Northwest GA. I know how to get the car under MSRP.
RotaryStalker 07-08-2003, 08:49 PM Wait until 8 pm on 7/31.. offer 1k under MSRP. Just might work.

This is actually exactly what burns me about them holding them all back for inspection or whatever. I absolutelyl could have waited all they way until today to order this car, waited less, worried less, earned interest on my deposit, everything better. Probably still even gotten the gifts. So what was the benefit to the pre-order?
Maybe the months of anticipation? The process hasn't really been all that fun so far. If Mazda's going to bring in another new model, I'd be happy to help advise them how to do this better. Probably everybody on the site could. I guess I'd still do it the same way again, but it still burns me.
rxtreme 07-08-2003, 09:13 PM I did the the same thing to get my car in the 2nd allocation vs. third here in VA. The dealer I was working with screwed me out of 1st and 2nd shipments so I went with another dealer in the area after checking his inventory. Not bad for a lowly customer.
P00Man 07-08-2003, 09:28 PM how DO you do that VIN thing anyway?

RotoRooter 07-08-2003, 10:21 PM The car better show up soon, I am private selling my VW TDI this Friday. . . As for the guys who think the pre-order was a waste . . . I think I agree. My buddies are laughing at me and my forum geeks who have been waiting for 6 months now. They check a list, pick a car, call, and ink a deal in 2hours time! Well at least they didn't get the hardcover book and I certainly won't share coffee with them from my thermos :) Take that.
TJRX8 07-09-2003, 10:29 PM And no one knew for sure if any would be available let alone what you would want. Ordering early was a small insurance policy as far as I'm concerned. No biggie either way.
Besidesit gave me something to stress over for the past 5-6 months. :D
P00Man 07-09-2003, 10:31 PM i am 18 lol, and it freking doesnt work anymore...

I've actually been waiting over a year now. I pre-ordered a G35 Sedan, but it's ass was too ugly for me. Plus the intertior was not exciting at all. That was close to the sametime I heard about the RX-8. Once I saw the early RX-8 proto-type. I was hooked. It's been a long time waiting, but I don't buy a new car very often.
The trick I found here in Australia with two dealers (and one was the one I signed for eventually) when all were saying they'd sold out, was to ask if they had dealer demo cars, two of the four dealers I spoke to said they had a car allocated for this purpose, but would sell it as a pre-order if they had someone willing to go for it, so I get first drive on it, if I want it, I keep it. I only ordered 4 weeks ago, but am getting a first shipment one on the 1st of August :D
Not sure if it'll work like that in the US, but could be worth a try.
beaner 07-10-2003, 02:31 PM As I have said elsewhere...what's the big deal about the pre-order? We complain when manufacturers don't give us any information about new cars ahead of time, and now we are complaining that Mazda did? It "don't" make sense.
Mazda could have done like most car companies, released their 2004 model in September of 2003, released random colors and random options to the dealers and then let you fight over it.
Oh...they did do that with the Mazda 6...hmm...they are sold out of 5-speed 6s sport packages.
So Mazda was smart...the pre-order program gave them some idea of what the Rx-8 buyers are looking for so they don't build a bunch of Automatics that sit on the lot and require incentives to move.
They should have a pre-order program for all of their new cars. It certainly might have helped the 6 sales.
ibfubar2000 07-10-2003, 02:34 PM well with the preorder we got some great gifts. the hardcover rx8 book, the coffe mug and the thermos and the special edition rx8 magazine. without the preorder i would never of gotten this stuff. so i am glad i preordered i really like the gifts so far. wish i had the car to go with them of course, but the gifts are a nice surprise!
ectomort 07-13-2003, 12:50 PM Overall, I've been pretty satisfied with the pre-order program and the information from my dealer (Ray Kausin @ Marina Mazda.) I ordered in mid-April, so it technically isn't a preorder, but I've been getting the emails and received the book in late June. In June, my dealer said he expected to receive his first allocation in mid-July which turned out to be a rather accurate guess.
Between that information and stuff from this forum like the MazdaUSA inventory cheat, ibfubar2000 & budaman running VIN checks, andd 3rotor's intel; I've been able to keep from going manic with all the anticipation. Certainly Mazda can improve their pre-order program, but I think alot of the harsher criticisms I've seen on this forum are unwarranted and I suspect that 2 weeks after everyone gets their cars there will be nothing but thanks and praise.

Or, the preorder data could be very misleading for Mazda, since it takes a real enthusiast or rotary-lover to commit to a first-year, untested car that they'd never even sat in. Therefore, the purchasing patterns of the preorderers may not reflect the average customer. Along the same lines, notice that most people on this forum preordered the GT package, often with NAV. This tells you the preorderers also were a lot more willing to part with their cash on extras than Joe Average.
boowana 07-13-2003, 03:32 PM Who said the pre-order goodies have finished? Might there be more??? Mmmm....
MaRX8 07-13-2003, 05:08 PM Did RX-Nut or 3 Rotor getting any additional gifts with their purchase?

Well, it's only been 1-2 days since they signed on the "dotted" line. Give them a chance for their purchase to be processed into the system and just maybe in a week or two, we may know.
