rough idle

I am having problems with my car. It idles rough after it gets hot. It seems like the engine lopes and has a miss. The RPMs get down to 750 and the engine shakes. on several occasions the car just cut off and would not come back on and when it did it ran like crap. no horsepower and no rpms beyond 5k after 20 failed attempts to get it back on. Worst of all I had to push it out of the way one time in front of a 350z The car usually gets like this when i get the RPMs above 6K or long continouse driving (60+ miles). The car has been in the shop many times. They claim all RX-8s run like this. I was told that the rotary engine never ran smoothly. I advised them, before i put 3k on my car, it ran great, ever since then, the idle is rough.

Do not accept that explanation from the service people. Rotary-engined cars should not stall while idling. The car definitely seems to have a problem based on your description of what it is doing. If necessary, take this issue up the chain as instructed in the owners manual. Let the service manager know that you do not accept their explanation and that you are going escalate the issue if they cannot resolve the issue at his/her level. If they don't fix it, go to the general manager of the dealership and if that doesn't resolve the issue, call Mazda North American Operations. Once the problem is resolved, you may want to take your car to another dealership for service.

As I say, the instructions for how to resolve issues with this car is in your manual.

I have had my car since November 2003, and it has never had any problem. It runs smooth, has all the power I want when I want it. So this claim that all RX8s do what yours is doing, don't you believe it. The suggestion that you have a bad cat sounds right. You might check for the possibility of an ecu problem or you may also have a clogged fuel or air filter. These are more likely candidates for your problem that a challenge with the engine.

The RB plug wires helped my idle. I seriously doubt that will solve all your probs though. Good luck
