View Full Version : What oil filter do you use & where to buy? SINISTER 05-08-2005, 04:17 PM Hey, whats the best oil filter brand and whats the part # if you know it. Also, where do you buy yours? What oil weight should I go with? brillo 05-08-2005, 04:32 PM Wix filter and 5W-20 Go48 05-08-2005, 05:19 PM OEM filters purchased in half dozen lots, along with drain plug gaskets, from Rosenthal or Trussville at a reasonable price. Pennzoil or Castrol 5W-20, non-synthetic. I change the oil and filter at 2.5-3K intervals and replace the drain plug gasket at the same time to avoid the unsightly drips on my beautifully-painted garage floor. :D jalibrandi 05-08-2005, 08:40 PM Why not use synthetic oil? I changed oil for the first time and used Mobil synthetic blend, not the Mobil 1. any issues with this oil? ZoomZoomH 05-08-2005, 08:54 PM please search 'synthetic oil', and enjoy reading for hours on end.... please don't start this debate again... ZoomZoomH 05-08-2005, 08:55 PM taht said, i use Mazda OEM filter with Motorcraft 5w20 synthetic blend :) SDB 05-08-2005, 09:32 PM taht said, i use Mazda OEM filter with Motorcraft 5w20 synthetic blend :) I second that. But now that Walmart is not carrying Motorcraft I need to find a new source. Bet I can't beat the 1.55 that Walmart used to charge. G8rboy 05-09-2005, 12:38 AM Mobil1 Model 110 - it's taller than OEM replacement I believe meant for the RX7... but it's the same size as the factory installed OEM. N8theGr8 05-09-2005, 12:59 AM I use Purolator Pure One with Castrol GTX oil. I would imagine though there isn't a huge difference between filters (except Fram...stay away). As long as you change your oil regularly (3000 miles) Nubo 05-09-2005, 05:17 PM Another vote for the OEM, purchase in lots from Rosenthal -- the least you can do since they are kind enough to post the TSBs online. Low Fly'n 8 05-09-2005, 06:53 PM Mobil 1 filter & Castrol GTX 5W-20 every 3,000 miles. This is kind of interesting: http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html Razz1 05-10-2005, 01:31 AM Bosch filter with Castrol 5w-20 Red Devil 05-10-2005, 08:19 AM OEM filter with Castrol 5W20. benlee12 07-21-2005, 07:22 AM Motorcraft 5W-20 from local Walmart ($1.92/q) Pure One PL14612 ($4.99 at Pepboys with $1 off coupon) FoxTypeR 07-21-2005, 09:20 AM Mobil 1-M108 filter and Mobil Clean 5,000 5W-20. Change around every 4,000 miles. KYLiquid 07-21-2005, 09:49 AM Wix filter and 5W-20 wix, way to go IMO I also use Napa filters, i belive they are made by wix. could be wrong. its not so much the name brand to look for, its the company making the filter and the parts they use. i would recomend wix and bosch as far as a filter maker. i would recomend Napa, Pureone/Purlator, Mobil 1 and Mazda. K&N makes great oil filters but i dont feel they are worth the cost, almost 3 times as much. zoomzoom_8 07-21-2005, 10:02 AM I use the k & n filter with royal purple oil, no problems here at all so far, besides the k & n filter give you an extra 10 horsepower like thier breathers do, haha jking :) mauricio 08-17-2005, 12:46 AM oem filters and any oil except sythetic nycgps 08-17-2005, 10:19 PM K&N Filter here with Quaker State Advance Engine Full-Synthetic 5w-20 Since nothing in the manual saids "Please do not use Synthetic Engine Oil for RX-8", and they keep improving Full Synthetic Oil these days. Im going to be "the one" to try. My other cars use Mobil-1 Extended Performance. but I think Quaker State is good. at least they have something like this : http://www.quakerstate.com/pages/programs/warranty.asp K&N Filter hmm .... I dont know, I dont think its much diff than other "major" brand, yes except for Fram(stay away), it cost around 9-10 bucks each. but I use K&N Filters for all my family cars (1995 Quest, 2005 Altima SE-R), so Im good I think :-) staticlag 08-17-2005, 11:31 PM Purolator Pure One Royal Purple 5w20 swoope 08-18-2005, 03:45 AM just ordered these. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OIL-FILTERS-RX7-RX-7-T2-RX-8-Rx3-Rx2-REW-ROTARY-ENGINE_W0QQitemZ7994048654QQcategoryZ33661QQssPage NameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem ordered on sat night got to my front door piorty mail on wed. not bad. works out to ~4.50 per filter delivered. beers Noguni 08-18-2005, 04:00 AM Mobil 110 like swank monkey list here http://www.swankmonkey.com/mazda/rx8/2004/oil_filter/ and just switched to royal purple and it feels smooth. I wish I did it when I first bought the car. rotarygod 08-18-2005, 04:13 AM Wix filters. Royal Purple 5W20 synthetic oil. Nubo 08-18-2005, 12:21 PM Like I posted before, I go with the OEM. But wanted to say that I've always had my doubts about criticality of oil filter brands ever since I owned the old VW beetles. If you ever changed the oil on one, you also may have been amazed to discover that there was NO OIL FILTER on those engines, at least as we know them. There was a wire strainer that you cleaned out. It was about the coarseness of your average kitchen strainer, if memory serves. Well, those engines lasted ok and failures would usually come from other idiosyncracies of the engine, like not keeping up with valve lash adjustment. So, after driving many miles on engines without a filter, I don't get too crazy worrying about the relative micron particle sizes of different filters. If anything I'd worry about restriction to flow. I'd bet that damn strainer would beat any cartridge filter ever made in that department. :p Here's an example of the type of strainer. The flange was 5 or 6 inches across. http://www.status-vw.co.uk/shop/media/113115175.jpg edit - I think it also had a magnetic drain plug. olddragger 08-18-2005, 05:00 PM ditto--whats wrong with fram filters i have been using them for years. On all types of cars/jeeps/vans/bigblocks etc. Heck if you change the oil every 3-5 k the filter is kind of a mute point like Nubo says. Just make sure you have an adequete flow rate and you are ok. olddragger |
