View Full Version : I know this is a long shot but...
abbid 05-02-2005, 03:05 PM I was wondering if theres anyone out there with a wrecked/garaged 8 that got decent MPG [20-24] that is willing to send me their MAF for testing. Currently, my car will not get more than 200-220 miles per 13.5 gallons no matter how slow/soft/granny i drive. That works out to 14.8 - 16.2 MPG. I want to conduct a test to see if the MAF is the problem between the huge variance all the cars are seeing. If anyone is interested, let me know! You will get your original MAF back, this is just to run a test. I will ship both ways to anyone interested within north america.
zoom44 05-02-2005, 03:13 PM have you ever taken a long - i.e. whole tankful- drive at 65 with the cruise on?
abbid 05-02-2005, 03:17 PM My current MPG figures are the direct result of 85% highway [speed limit 65, i drive 72 in 6th] and 15% city. Surely i should be getting much higher figures with this combo, but this isnt the case..
Im_DANomite 05-02-2005, 04:05 PM i have an MR2 turbo and a lot of the 2 owner's eliminated the stock MAF with the HKS VPC. would this work with the 8?? i never bought the VPC cause i had no use for it.

I feel you! I have to fill up at 200 miles on the trip odometer, and I don't drive like a maniac.
army_rx8 05-03-2005, 07:04 PM ^i too am in teh never get over 220...lucky if i get 200 on 13.5 gallons of gas club.
wow long named club...we RULE :D
DynamicDookie 05-03-2005, 07:27 PM 200+/-5 exactly everytime. fast, slow, 3200-3400 driving, 87-91, no change. its like the ecu rations the gas.
jaguargod 05-03-2005, 07:31 PM I assume that everyone in the aforementioned "club" has received the N flash. What about the improved spark plugs? I think there may be a TSB out for them. I was getting about 13-14 mpg no matter how I drove, and I took it in and complained of hard starts and "piss poor gas mileage", as I put it. I got the flash and the spark plugs replaced, and I am now getting about 18.2 mpg, and I think it may improve on this current tank.
RotaryNoob 05-03-2005, 10:55 PM Lucky bastards. I get 180 per tank... And thats putting in 13.9.
BRealistic 05-05-2005, 01:56 PM I drive my RX8 hard mostly around town with several back road romps (almost daily), and get 15/16mpg (i check my mpg every tank). I did get over 18/19mpg twice with a lot of easy driving during break-in (I think first or second fill up). But I always am lucky to get the EPA City number for every vehicle I have owned- regardess of my driving situation (city/interstate). I think I just drive vehicles too hard- including revving them too high and driving too fast. But I smile all the way to the gas station in my RX-8. The smiles per tank are more important to me than the miles per tank.
Anyways, that doesn't address your question. I suggest skipping gears when accelerating at a relaxed pace (like got 1st, third, sixth), and leaving the car in 6th even when driving relatively slowly. Try that for a tankfull. Also note using the a/c is going to cause a loss of fuel economy, and that included the windshield defrost. You might also try upping the pressure in your tires by a few pounds to reduce rolling resistance, but this will cause the ride to be stiffer. Oh, and try letting off the gas long before needing to hit the brake for stoplight and sharp turns. Your intertia will get you there fairly quick.
As far as different owners getting different MPG, I think driving habits and driving conditions mean a lot. City driving for one person may be considered highway for another person who never gets to accelerate past 30mph in stop and go traffic. And going 85mph on the interstate is going to use more fuel than going 75mph.
jaguargod 05-06-2005, 09:14 AM I just filled up this morning, and I went 271 miles on 14.6 gallons. I would estimate that my daily drive is approximately 80% city and 20% hwy.
DynamicDookie 05-10-2005, 02:38 AM i have the N flash and I drive about 60% city. could the sparks plugs make that much difference? i rarely take it to wot (two or three times per tank) and I shift at 3400-3600.
do you skip gears (1,3,6)?
what rpm do you shift at?
91 octane?
Fanman 05-10-2005, 03:20 AM I got about 200 miles per tank when my car was stock. Now I get about 185 with the turbo.
