I once had a job where every Monday we had a staff meeting and at the end of every staff meeting we took time to ask about everyone's weekend and to give people a chance to review a movie they saw over the weekend. I thought it would be cool to try something here.

I'll start:

On Satuday I rented I'll Sleep When I'm Dead (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0319531/). The movie starred Clive Owen (of BMW mini movie and King Arthur fame), Malcom McDowell, and John Rhys-Meyers (Bend it Like Beckham). The movie tells the story of a former crime boss (Owen) trying to learn the details leading up to the suicide of his younger brother (Rhys-Meyers).

The pacing of this movie is extremely slow. From the box cover I had expected a crime drama similar to The Limey (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0165854/) or Sexy Beast (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0203119/) with some action mixed in with the drama. There is very little violence overall, and the story is mottled and confusing in parts. There are several different plotlines going on with little resolution of any of them. Overall I have to say I was pretty disappointed.

3 out of 10 stars.

Sahara. saw it last weekend. A horrible basterdization of a good book. But, my wife really liked it. The acting was ok, lots of lose ends left. Action was goofy, but good. Had some nice funny parts.

3 out of five stars.

Acting is first rate, zombies are cool as shit

Watch the pregant scene and tell me that is not the creepyst thing you ever saw.

First rate in evey catagorie, except for the very end.

5 stars.

I agree. Loved this movie, and, yes, better than the original. How often does THAT happen??? Yeah, I know - rarely. Be sure you catch the extras where they showed how they did the special effects with the zombies' heads getting blown off. Really good stuff. And the ending.........

Funny I almost reviewed Dawn of the Dead as well. I watched it Friday night as I was sick and in the mood for a mindless movie. I'm generally a movie snob and pretty tough on most mainstream movies, especially remakes. Needless to say I was expecting this to be laughably bad. But I have to say I loved this movie, it was just plain fun to watch. Excellent remake.

On that note if you haven't seen it yet I highly recommend "Shaun of the Dead" a more commical approach to the zombie genre from across the pond. A lot of fun there. I give it 5 stars.

Saw the new Sean Penn/Nicole Kidman film, The Interpreter, directed by Sidney Pollack over the weekend. Good thriller. Not one of Penn's best roles, but impressive nonetheless. Kidman as a white African national from a fictional country that closely resembles Zimbabwe was excellent.

Plot largely revolved around a threatened assassination of an African dictator. Doesn't give much of the plot away to say that the intrigue largely turns on whether the UN interpreter (Kidman) is a victim or a part of the plot, but since the audience knows she's the former, the suspense is somewhat less than it could have been.

Best line from Kidman: "Revenge is an easy version of grief."

Hey, if you like Dawn of the Dead you're probaly going to like Shaun of the Dead as well. Possibly the funnyist movie that most poeple didn't heard of last year. It's a mix of Dawn of the Dead and 28 Days with a British humor. The acting was superb, even though I didn't understand the lingo very well, it was still very funny. The execution was perfect, I was rolling on the floor laughing every 5 minutes. The funnyist part I thought was about the story, which made sense in sorts of how people will react to zombies. The movie was made to be ironic with pretty much no twists and really no plot. Just like horror movies of the 80's which I still love, you just watch it for the gore and humor, no explantion needed. How horror movie should be like. I mean I liked the sixth sense when it came out, but damn, every horror movie must come with a freaking twist at the very end to confuse everybody leaving the theater now. Thanks M. Night Shyamalan, you POS. I give Shaun of the dead 9/10 A must buy movie pretty much.

Definatley my favorite as well. Bruce Cambell just gets beat on that entire movie and its great fun. I'm not sure I would classify the evil dead series as zombie movies, it was possesed people and a demonic army rather than mindless walking dead.

House of flying daggers.

I love the chinese sword operas...but this is a tough one to rank.

The acting was first rate, really well done. I mean, oscar caliber. The cinimatography was also excellent, sort of a cross between hero and crouching tiger hiden dragon.

The story dragged way too much. Not enough action, the fight scenes were excellent, but one in a field left me cold. and there was not enough of them. So I am at a loss as to how to rank this...I guess 4 out of five. Hero is better if you have never seen any of these movies. Iron monky is really good also.

As an aside, I am in love with the female lead...that girl is somkeing hot.

And nobody's mentioned "Sin City" yet? THAT was a good movie! :)

Anybody who get can Micky Rourke to be a believable good guy. And the concept of Frodo as the silent serial killer is really terrific. Mr. Rodriguez does so much with so little. And, you'll never think of the mom from the Spy Kids movie the same after this movie.

Clive was in it as well. I actually liked everything about "I'll Sleep when I'm Dead" until the ending. Very unsatisfying.

Back to Sin City. If you like a stylish, dark, violent movie that's well done, go see it. 8 out of 10. (shouldn't we be using rotors instead of stars? ;) )

Just saw "The Gangs of New York" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0217505/) on DVD.

This is a good example of a good movie that should have been a great movie. Martin Scorsese wants to tell an epic of America as a nation of immigrants struggling for their place. It is set in New York City in the 1860s as the Civil War rages far away. Meanwhile, groups of established American battle fresh-off-the-boat groups, especially the Irish, for the scraps that fall from the tables of wealthy New Yorkers. Real-life figures including Boss Tweed, P.T. Barnum and Horace Greeley appear alongside characters based on figures out of gang myth and legend.

The biggest flaw: The relationships between the three main characters are just too convenient and unconvincing. Of course the young man with a vendetta against the gang leader is going to infiltrate right to the top of the gang and become a surrogate son to the leader. Of course the woman he falls for is also linked to the gang boss. Etc., etc. Cameron Diaz's part could have been deleted with no loss to the story. Best part is Daniel Day-Lewis' mesmerizing performance as the leader of the nativist gang.

If you get the DVD, watch the Discovery Channel segment on the gangs of New York first to get more out of the story.

"Gangs of New York" was a 'see-once' movie for me. Those are the movies I think are good enough to watch, but tough enough to only watch once. Kind of like "Schindler's List", "American History-X", "Tears of the Sun", to name a few.

Saw Hitchhiker's Guide last night. It was amusing, but it absolutely lost something from the book - hard to put my finger on exactly what. Maybe between the radio and the TV and the book the story has been told too often and the jokes are staler than they used to be. Since Judy and I snuck in at senior prices again, I almost don't feel ripped off.

blade III.

I am at a loss as to why this movie was made. It clearly spells the end for the franchase, but really...I could have written a better movie.

The plot of this steaming plate of poo is somewhat vague, but for some reason vampires decide to wake up the first vampire, who lives in the desert. They do not explian why, But I think it is to kill blade.

This new(old) vampire is simply not bad enough to be anything but that annoying gay waiter you got at olive garden last time you eat there..the one who tried to talk you into the overpriced acidic vinegary house wine, and then had the balls to push dessert on you..(ah, come on big boy, show her a good time...you saveeed some romm for the tinny weeineee cakkee?" No, I did not, and if I did I would not get it now, you limpid voiced cake pushing gender confused SOB.!!

The ubervamp also looks like a gay matador in his tight pants and oiled skin. I also think he had a voiceover from the same guy disney uses to voice thier epcot rides. You know, the guy with the deep, 1950's grade b horrer movie generals voice, who emphisize strange parts of his scrip in a booming voice..."IN the BIGGINingG, the dinosaurs ROAMED the earth..."

Oh yes. two pro wrestlers are prominatly displayed here...triple H, and some annoying black haired chick that makes chyna look stable. They get a lot of screen time. That is not a good thing.

Well, blade makes a bunch of new friends in this move. On of the minor players from american pie is in it, looking like she tried to eat herself out of the job. She alway had a nasty voice, now she looks like a hotdog when you nuke in in the microwave and forget to cut the skin. Like a plump, overstuffed sausage.

Jessica biel plays whistlers daughter (poorly, and in spite of the fact that blade I established that vampires killed all of his family off. But haey, what is one more plot hole among friends.) She is just going through the motions. and did not look all that hot in this flick.

Finally, we get to the one bright spot in the gag fest. Ryan Reynolds as hannibal kane. I guy who was once a vamp, but was cured!?!?!?!? No, they do not tell us how.

Anyway, reynalds has a gift of making even the most inane lines funny, and clearly was using this flick to try out for other movies were he can play the sarcastic funny sidekick to the action hero who never gets laid.

Snipes is flacid looking, only manages one line well, and needs to hit the gym.

Even the costumes looked cheap.

The writter, David s Goyer(I bet not his real name...probably is hiding in the san fransisco underground scene now living soley off the liquid nutrition provided by "glory holes") Should be bitch slapped for this mess. And he should have to pay me for the time I lost from my life. I watched the 10 minitue extended version..I was praying for the sweet releif of death .

There was one very funny scene invoving a vampire pomeranen. I will give this movie 1/2 of a rotor for that.

Avoid it at all costs. You can have a better time abrading your penis with sand paper at an aids clinic and dipping it in the petre dishes laid out in the lab.

I would agree on all counts except I would give it a 3. Most movies, even seeminly bad ones, entertain me more than this one. I made jokes with my brother about another twist in the plot near the end after the whole side swap thing. The snow scene didn't do it for me either.

I saw, Hitchhiker's Guide, and I might be able to give a good perspective on it because I've never read the books. I've wanted to, but my reading list is so long it would have probably been at least to next year by the time I got to them, and it took some convincing from my friends because I wanted to read the books instead.

The changes in perspective for it were good, and made me think that DNA just wrote down a drug trip of his. Some of the jokes did not seem to be executed quite well, and the timing is probably better in the book. I would give it a 4 out of 5, where a 5 is an instant classic. The movie was good, but not "Holy Grail" good, more like "And Now for Something Completely Different" good.

I saw Saw a couple days ago with my brother. I'm not one to mention bad acting, unless it is horrible, and for some parts of this movie it was horrible. The plot was decent for a horror movie, but had one critical error. There are key objects in the room with the two guys, restrained by chains, they could have easily obtained by taking off their shirts and using them to get the objects barely out of reach. They use the shirt for another purpose though. This really bothered me, and combined with some of the horrible acting, I'd give this a 2 out of 5.

I saw The Interpreter last night. Good movie. Not quite an action flick - most of the time your trying to piece the puzzle together figuring out who's motivated to do what. Nicole Kidman's character carries around a lot of baggage and you don't fully know what her angle is until the end. I'm still trying to figure out why she didn't end up in some kind of UN jail. That's one good-looking woman.

I've been interested in Masonry since my Grandfather was one too, although I never got to ask him about it, plus there's the whole founders thing. I'd heard that masonry had mostly died out by the '30s though. I've seen several Masonic lodges, including one this weekend that caught my attention.

Saw "The Interpreter" (Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn). I didn't find it quite as "intelligent" as stated in the trailers and ads. It started off promisingly enough, but quickly became predictable. I guess they should not have let on that this film was directed by the same director of 3 Days of the Condor - I guessed how they got the weapon into the UN.

Kidman looks great in the film (for those of you who care) and her do gooder image is complete as she even rides a scooter around the streets of New York! Penn grimaces his way through most of the film but I don't think it was as good a performance as his role in Mystic River.

The screenplay is competent. The storyline contains the requisite plot twists, but ultimately, I left the cinema at the end feeling unsatisfied. Something was missing.......

Funny as hell, even though the movie is a ripoff of Fantastic Four/X-Men

Saw Kingdom of Heaven last weekend.

Good movie, a lot like Gladiator for the first half, minus the slaughtering-his-family part. Closest Orlando Bloom has come to looking like a man thus far, but his voice is not the greatest for speeches. Two and a half hours but it goes by pretty fast. All in all it's a good story, and doesn't make either side look like the bad guys, just certain characters, which is more like it should be. I give it a B/B-

I have some overdue movie reviews to post.

The first is Kung Fu Hustle. It's an OK flick. Better than Shaolin Soccer, but nothing special. The funniest part is the knife throwing in the alleyway.

Other than KFH and SS, I haven't seen any other Stephen Chow films that I'm aware of. Can anyone recommend a really good one?

The second movie is House of Flying Daggers. What a snore-fest. By the end of the movie I was wishing everyone would die so that I could go to bed. I had no emotional investment in any of the characters, the action was bland, the acting was OK, and the story felt forced.

Visually it was beautiful. The use of colors in the scenery and costumes was really well done. Zhang Zi Yi was stunning as always. Too bad everything else did nothing for me. :(

Kung Fu Hustle - 3 out of 5 rotors.

House of Flying Daggers - 2 out 5 rotors.

My wife and I saw Unleashed over the weekend. Let me start by saying that I had been looking forward to this movie for nearly two years. I'm a huge Jet Li fan and the fact that this was produced by Luc Besson and Corey Yeung had me pretty excited.

Well it was well worth the wait. Unleashed is a fantanstic movie.

Jet Li stars as Danny a man who's been raised from a child to believe that he is a dog. He wears a collar that his "owner", played quite evily by Bob Hoskins, removes whenever he needs some dirty work done. Through rather violent circumstances, Danny is able to get away. He meets up with a blind piano tuner (played by Morgan Freeman) and his step daughter (played by Kerry Condon), and they help him rediscover himself.

The fights scenes in this movie are very brutal. There were parts where the whole audience was cringing and groaning from the sheer poundings that were being given and received. I don't recall ever seeing Jet Li this violent.

At the same time the relationship between Sam (Freeman), Victoria (Condon), and Danny is very touching. Morgan Freeman continues to prove why he is one of the greatest actors of all time. There's just something about his style and delivery that makes you believe that every character is real. Jet Li's acting performance is also top notch. His use of facial expressions and body language speak volumes and he delivers his dialogue far better here than is some of his other english language films.

I've never seen Kerry Condon in anything else, but I suspect we will see more of her in the future. It is her character's relationship with Danny that helps him realize that there is a world outside of his cage.

I can't review this movie without commenting on Bob Hoskins. I've liked Bob Hoskins in nearly every movie I've ever seen him in, and this movie is no exception. He plays a bastard in the film and he does it well. I hated his character in the first five minutes of the movie. And that's exactly what he wanted me to do.

A couple of other things. Something I noticed about Unleashed, something which I feel is lacking in most of the mainstream movies out right now, is that it has heart. The plot is relatively simple, yet the actors are able to convey their characters in such a way that you feel and believe in them. Hell I even felt sorry somewhat for Bob Hoskins' character. It's amazing how a group of good actors and a good script can take what would otherwise be 2 dimensions and make it 3.

Have I mentioned that I liked this movie? :D

I give this movie 11 out of 10 rotors. :)

HEY!!! you can't give more then 10 rotors :p

I rented two movies this weekend becuase it was rainy and though that I might as well make it a blockbuster night.

1st movie - Alone in the Dark

Avoid this movie at all cause. It is not even worth getting paid to watch it. It supposed to be based on the video game made about 10 years ago, which was one of my favorite of all time. But it ended up not as a zombie and ghost type as the video game, rather some aliens type creature. The acting was really really bad. The plot was really bad. And even the action scene sucked-ass. This is the kind of movie where I see 8 year-olds walking out of the theather asking for their money back from the manager and actually get a refund. wow. how can they make such a movie? ZERO rotors!!! ZERO!!!!!

2nd movie- Donnie Darko

This movie was about a schizo highschool kid played by Jack Gyllenhaal. The kid thinks that he is getting paranoid and is going insane since he have had a lot of problems when he was younger but soon finds out that there is much more then everything seems. The movie takes place in 1987 but was released in 2001. I really really do not want to give any more away because the plot is something that has to be seen. This movie is a must rent, almost perfect in everyway and was a sleeper hit. I give it 9 out 10 rotors. RENT IT!!!!!!! ARRGGGGGGHHHHH!!!

"Beyond the Sea"

This movie about singer Bobby Darin can't decide if it's a biography or a musical. If star/director Kevin Spacey had turned this into a feel-good Broadway stage show, he might have had a hit. But having crowds break out into spontaneous dancing in the streets, as in a musical, doesn't mesh with the biographical elements. And the biographical elements left me with more questions than answers about Darin's life and his genre-spanning career.

Spacey is a good singer, but not a great one, and this is just one very expensive karaoke night.

But I know without a doubt ...
Myyyyyyy heart will lead me there soon.
We'll meet, I know we'll meet, beyond the shooooore.
We'll kiss, just like before ...

Uh, sorry.

"The Aviator"

Another biopic.

Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Howard Hughes, the brilliant, dashing industrialist whose life was derailed by obsessive-compulsive disorder, which was little understood at the time.

It's sort of sad to see a great mind reduced to its worst aspect, and that's what this movie it about. If you want to spend 170 minutes watching someone's symptoms, this is your flick.

There are many good scenes, though. I particularly enjoyed Hughes' visit to the snooty, pretentious New England family of Katharine Hepburn, one of the many Hollywood stars he dated. When the family matriarch says they "don't care about money," Hughes replies that that's because they have it. I wanted to cheer.

"The Aviator"

Another biopic.

Yup, that and the senate commitee hearing were the high points. That movie would not have been good without Leo....he just can act.

Yes, the Senate scenes were good because they had dramatic tension. Hughes pulled himself back from the brink of psychological collapse and financial ruin, and essentially handed an on-the-take senator his ass. Good stuff.

DiCaprio is Ok, I guess. I've finally been able to look at him, years after recovering from the trauma of seeing "Titanic." (BTW, he was one of the actors considered for playing Bobby Darin in "Beyond the Sea." I wonder if that movie would have turned out better if it had been more than a karaoke party for Kevin Spacey.)

All I can say to that is ...

Yeah the line forms
On the right, babe.
Now that Maaaacky's ... back in toooooooooown!

Uh, sorry again.

Wow. Cool story.

I guess he wasn't her dream lover.

Or she could have married Dick Clark and your father would always look 35.

Mr. Clark always looked at her sort of like a father figure. When he left philly he invited her along...but she stayed here with my dumbass blood father, who decided to move in with our next store neighbor when I was two...and tottaly dropped out of sight when I was about 8. So she meet my abusive step father....

Weird how life works.

She also was a hand in the breyers ice cream commercials...and did coppertone commercials. TV was live then.

I may try to find a photo of her when she was young. she was a looker.

Now of course she is pretty much nuts. Has been since my brother died.

Wow I am depressing myself. :(

"The Longest Yard" Sandler's best movie yet, Not funniest, but best overall.

"Sin City" Very wierd but one of the best movies I've ever seen.
