View Full Version : Broke Hand ... Can't Drive!
DavisRx8 04-19-2005, 11:58 PM I broke my right hand (I'm right handed), and now I'm having trouble doing things I've always taken for granted: eating correctly, sleeping on my side, gelling my hair, getting dressed, wiping my a$$, typing, writing etc... but, the real tragedy is that I can't drive my baby anymore! :(
To add salt to the wound ... I broke my hand a mere 20 minutes after I installed a new racingbeat exhaust, intake, and voodoo shift knob! I didn't even get a chance to take my 8 for a test drive.
I've had my 8 for over a year and put over 35k miles on it; all this time, I've worried that some part of my car would fail... looks like I'm the one that broke instead.
Don't take your health or 8 for granted people. I'm cursed with spending 4 weeks minimum staring longingly at my 8 wallowing in the driveway while I take the bus to classes and work.
Argh... typing this took 10 minutes.
RX8-CARL 04-20-2005, 12:04 AM Wouldn't worry about the rest of the things but not driving your 8 for 4weeks,
Thats bad.
Get well soon.
BlueEyes 04-20-2005, 12:10 AM Try breaking your collar bone and opposite wrist!!
Sucks to hear, but how did you break it. Make something good up if its embarssing :p
fullsmoke 04-20-2005, 12:20 AM Quit bein a sissy! Walk it off. At least, that's what my baseball coach always told me. Seriously though, that sucks. :(

truemagellen 04-20-2005, 12:32 AM get a shift knob threading molded into your cast...who says you cant drive :)
DavisRx8 04-20-2005, 12:45 AM get a shift knob threading molded into your cast...who says you cant drive :)
lol...that's what I told my nurse to do for me. :D Unfortunately she didn't think it was a good idea. :(
rx-8_or_? 04-20-2005, 12:55 AM That really sucks! I was down with a bum leg for a week, and the following week when I went back to work I still couldn't apply much pressure with my left leg, so I had to take my wife's car (automatic) to work. That was tough even though it was just four days! All the best managing for the next four weeks!
draco067 04-20-2005, 06:10 AM how'd you break it?
alnielsen 04-20-2005, 07:17 AM Duct Tape your had to the shifter. That'll "Git r dun".

I'm torn trying to decide whether your priorities are in order, or really farked up....
On the other hand :D you did 35k miles in a year? That's a little over what I would do (about 30 - 33k/year, 100mi/2hr r/t commute daily). How was the 8 in those conditions? My thought is that if I have to spend that much time in a vehicle, I damn well want to enjoy it and have something fun/safe/reliable. How do you feel about the car after that much yearly driving?
rotten42 04-20-2005, 09:32 AM look on the bright side..at least you haven't gone blind. :D
Aratinga 04-20-2005, 10:19 AM look on the bright side..at least you haven't gone blind. :DYeah... but he might have, if he didn't break his hand! ;)
Seriously, though -- what a drag! What you need is a carpool partner who can shift for you while they're sitting in the passenger seat. I do that for my b/f when his right shoulder's acting up and it hurts him to shift. Sort of a semi-automatic transmission.
guy321 04-20-2005, 10:22 AM I feel your pain!! Really, I broke my left ankle 3 years ago. Depending on the weather sometimes my ankle hurts JUST ENOUGH to where I can't clutch :/
You may still be able to drive.. Try this.. (assuming you have an MT)
Clutch with left foot, use your right knee (or cast hand) to steady the wheel, and reach over and shift with your left hand..
Or attatch a piece of PVC pipe with an ID wide enough to fit around the handle to the cast and use that to shift.
Speed-ER doc 04-20-2005, 11:14 AM It's not the shifting that makes it unsafe (or hard) to drive with one's hand in a cast.....it's the steering.

And don't forget the law of conservation of momentum... in a panic-braking or front impact situation, you're gonna punch the dash with that heavy hand!
rx8wannahave 04-20-2005, 11:22 AM Sorry to hear that, I hope you get better soon! I've thought about that before, what If I got hurt and I could not drive my baby...sad, very sad.
Oh no...now the automatic people will come in here and say, "I told you automatics were better"...LOL
guy321 04-20-2005, 11:37 AM he cant steer with 1 hand left handed???!
You drive that torque monster, but I rarely drive with both hands on the wheel.

DavisRx8 04-20-2005, 11:37 AM how'd you break it?
Football accident. Someone stepped on my hand as I dived in to recover a fumble. ::Sighs:: ... at least i managed to hold onto the ball. :o
DavisRx8 04-20-2005, 11:41 AM How do you feel about the car after that much yearly driving?
It's been a great year driving the 8; haven't had any serious issues and I enjoy taking her out to the twisties now as much as I did when I first got her. It's going to be a rather depressing month. :(

I actually tried driving like that two nights ago :) ... unfortunately, it didn't work out too well. I nearly ran into the curb when my front wheels tramlined on some uneven pavement.
DavisRx8 04-20-2005, 11:52 AM Oh no...now the automatic people will come in here and say, "I told you automatics were better"...LOL
LOL. This is the first time where I wish i had one in place of my manual. No offense intended to those driving automatics....
The combination of not being able to pimp in my 8, properly take a shower, nor "shift my knob" ;) is really ruining my game ... hehe, I believe the vicodin just kicked in. :p
ZoomZoomH 04-20-2005, 12:12 PM how big is the cast? how much does it limit your right arm movement??
you said you broke your hand, so i assume the cast only go up to the elbow?
TKD Pahl 04-20-2005, 08:39 PM Bummer DavisRx8.
I broke my right arm last year breaking concrete near the end of my 1st degree tae kwon do black belt test (snapped like a dried twig). Spent the next five+ weeks driving the wife's van instead of my m/t 626, and dealing with many of the other inconveniences you describe.
Well I'm on track to test for 2nd degree this fall. The wife has been nagging me not to do it for fear of a repeat performance. Only thing I fear about breaking (bricks and arm) is that now instead of not driving a 626, it would be the 8. I'm having nightmares!
G-ReX 04-20-2005, 09:21 PM Ouch, that stinks, man. I broke my left leg 2 years ago (had a 5-sp Probe GT) and had to drive the neighbor's Olds Acheiva for 3 months. That hurt more than the fracture!
Here's to a quick recovery!
