View Full Version : Help for picking a color for RX-8
armansiu 06-23-2003, 11:08 PM I am currently having trouble with picking color for RX-8. What color should I take? I am thinking of Black or titanium grey. These two seems good.......but black seems so COMMON......titanium grey so how seems weird sometimes....i have also considered with the red or yellow....but they don't seem best, or respraying it to white is a good choice???? please give advise ~~ Thanks
Renesis08 06-23-2003, 11:20 PM That will be a decision that you can make only. I wouldn't suggest dark colors if you don't like to clean all the time. Red, yellow, blue look nice. I would get the white if they offered it here but had to go with the Titanium. If you really want white I would wait for '05 if they bring it out then. I wouldn't recommend redoing factory paint. At least not for awhile. Hope this helps. :D
SPDFRK 06-24-2003, 12:36 AM I just seen all the cars for the first time friday on a truck and I would go with the blue unless you personally have a problem with it and the ladies I was with thought it looked the best also. I would switch but I want the red/black interior so I'm getting silver. I know there are a lot of people here getting ti but i was not impressed, also did not like the yellow used and the green was kind of bland. The cars were a little dirty from travel but that is how they will be a majority of the time so I think I got a fair impression of all of them. For the record red looked very good, just draws too much unwanted attention and the black was quite attractive (what I originally ordered, but would make three black cars in a row for me).
armansiu 06-24-2003, 09:45 AM hmm........think my choice is minimized to black, ti, and the blue~~
i don't really like the silver it has, it's too light in color~ don't u guys think so?
rooster 06-24-2003, 10:04 AM No, I think silver looks nice. I got Ti, but I kind of regret not getting Silver.
I would never recommend painting over a factory color with a different color. The resale value goes to the toilet!!!
If you want something different, get Red, Silver, or Black. Ti is nice, but I am finding a lot of people on this forum are getting Ti.
Good Luck and Happy color picking!!!

Maximus 06-24-2003, 10:04 AM Silver with red & black leather = classic sport combo.
wakeech 06-24-2003, 10:59 AM ...black is probably the third least popular in North America, behind Yellow and Nordic Green (which is almost black)...
get black.

ditto keech.
black is where it's at.
POWER TO THE PEOPLE! :p
MaRX8 06-24-2003, 12:59 PM I was tied between Black and Titanium also. I love the Black it's slick and really nice. The contrast of the red tail lights agaist the Black is just awesome. But I've had a black car for 10 years now. So I wanted to try something different. The Titanium is what I chose.
If you don't mind trying to keep it Clean the Black is what I would choose. Also it will be (temp) Hotter in the summer. That's something to think about.
If you want a car that is cooler (temp), and will look cleaner when it's dirty go with the Titanium.
For Looks I'd choose Black. For ease I'd choose Titanium.
I wanted ease, and I've had a black car already. So that's what made the decision for me.

Using RXOwner and excluding all except for Canada and USA, I have a sample of 73 with the following distribution:
19=Gray
15=Black
14=Red
09=Silver
09=Blue
05=Yellow
02=Green
I wanted Yellow but no two-tone leather. So I thought... gee Gray would be cool with the Tan leather. I did not realize until after joining this forum how popular Gray/Silver really was!!! Those two colors amount to 38% of the total sample...
If you like a dark color then go Green.. it will be the diamond in the rough...
desmo996 06-24-2003, 01:50 PM Silver is the best color. It keeps the car simple and elegant. The only colors you'll find in my car are silver and Black (Interior):
truck 06-24-2003, 06:36 PM I like having something a bit unusual, so I went with the Green. Before joining the forum, I thought Red would be the big hit, and colors like titanium and green would be uncommon. I went Green, the titanium just didn't strike me.
After joining, I couldn't believe how popular the titanium was, it really seems to be hot. I haven't heard many folks talking about the green, so I may have found my niche. Nordic Green with the Chapperal interier. Patiently......or not so patiently waiting.
those of you who've seen the yellow, is it the same as the 6? or how does it compare from that?

Great choice of colour! ;) Lightning yellow is not like the yellow on the 6, it is closer to the yellow you see on the Ferraris. :D
rxeightr 06-24-2003, 08:41 PM hmm........think my choice is minimized to black, ti, and the blue
These are all good choices. I chose the Blue, as I knew I could not devote the extra time in keeping Black clean, which was my other serious choice.
I have owned Black vehicles in the past & loved them, but Blue won out for convenience's sake.
cueball 06-24-2003, 10:06 PM Like people have said before, the final choice is your own. First you have to ask if you could wake up everyday and live with the color you pick.
If you are willing to wait a little longer, than I would wait until the colors you are looking for show up at a dealer and see them in person. I don't think you can go wrong with any color, it all depends on the person.:)

Man -
I guess that you are one of the four others on this group who have ordered the yellow. ;) I have been getting HAMMERED by my family for ordering the yellow, but I think that it's really cool! I don't know, none of the other colours spoke to me the way the yellow did, but I have been doing alot of defending of that decision. It's killing me, just had to vent.

akrx8 06-25-2003, 12:19 AM haze,dont take any crap from chosing yellow.some off the coolest fast cars out there stand out in a croud with screaming yellow paint,you see these guys from a mile away coming down the highway.
anyway i tried to go for blue but i was to late to change the color of a dealer allocate car so i chose red with red/black interior. i would stay away from black unless you have alot of time to care for the finish,looks awsome clean but is a real pain to care for.
onix527 06-25-2003, 12:43 AM HI all New to the forum, Just want to tell haze I think yellow is a great choice! I myself order a yellow GT M/T, Parents had a few words about choice of color, but I know its gonna be hot!

Thanks for the support! I'm pretty happy about it too, but man when people start telling me in this really serious voice that I've screwed up a 30K dollar purchase, it can be a little debilitating.

Thats exactly why I didn't choose yellow or red for that matter radar doesn't discriminate but the Highway patrol behind it does, what made my mind up to go with silver was the pics of the white (honestly the only car I have ever liked in white) but we can't get them here so I went with the closest (silver) because the light colors bring out the lines of the car and the mazdaspeed doesn't look too bad either.
Dude, you should go with either Black, Silver, Green, Red, Blue, or Yellow.

haahahhaha, nice advice bro.
I ordered red, however I am debating between black, silver (have a silver car currently), and winning blue. Black is sharp but it attracts heat, cannot easily see the curves of the car, and is hard to keep relatively clean for extended periods of time. people say red is a girls color? ummmmm, no why are ferraris typically red? The word "rosso" meaning RED in Italian is a performance word in the automobile community - e.i. Pirelli P-Zero Rosso Directional tires.
Red is a performance color, i think the 8 looks great with red, however I do like the rather subtle look of blue, but blue is over played IMHO.

Seeing the nordic green in person swung my decision to give up my titanium gray 1st allocation pre-order.
MileHiTim 06-28-2003, 12:49 AM In my opinon, a red sports car is the ultimate statement. Dark blue is nice, but there's nothing quite like the blur of a hot red sports car zinging by to grab your attention. Yeah, it's a cop magnet, but what the hell - if your nice enough you find out most of the time they just want to take a closer look!
MadMax Rotor4 06-28-2003, 02:45 PM One of the primary colors.
Jump120MPH 06-29-2003, 06:44 PM Silver is a great color. My 2001 honda civic is sliver. Man I love that color, but I chose the Winning Blue. I just think that color just stands out and catches the eye. I cant wait to get it.
RodsterinFL 07-26-2003, 12:38 PM All of the colors are great! Yes we have preferences but for the one who sid I feel like I made a mistake after reading this thread _ NO you got the color you liked. I saw the yellow one and the yellow shade is great for yellow. Many are finding the colors are different in person - I ordered classic silver but got blue. The website blue chip looked almost like sky blue to me and all I could think of was a high school teacher I had with a sky blue PACER - ugh.. Of course this blue is well, you have to see it beautiful as is yellow and silver and read and... Enjoy the car!
WTF no turbo 08-28-2003, 09:04 PM Im in a yellow with a d-tag for 3 days lol!Im getting some heat from my family as well but my wife seems to really like it.Still debating on blue but i think this car can pull of yellow nicely i live the yellow but my debate was can the 8 pull it off.I think of yellow sports car i think lotus right away and a lotus the 8 in not.Need to decide by tommorrow the blue i have preordered comes in in about 2 weeks and im pulling my hair out trying to decide just dont want any remorse for going yellow but blue seems way overplayed imho.
Wankeler 08-28-2003, 09:37 PM Color is a personal choice. I'm still in love with my Mopar Purple... lol.
I've always loved dark cars... last few have been wife's choice of colors, and now it's my turn. Black is slick, but I went with Green. Been looking around locally and seeing alot of GREEN (not as nice as NORDIC) cars, trucks, SUVs... although some look nice in green, others are just not meant to be. The 8 in Nordic Green in my eyes... is gorgeous. But then again... I'm biased. ;)
Peace
RX-GR8 08-29-2003, 12:07 AM go with arrest me red. i have had a red vw, grand prix, mr-2, eclipse among others and soon to be a red rx-8.
partovi 08-29-2003, 12:34 AM I am currently trying to figure this out aswell. My two favorites are black and red. The silver looks the best with the mazdaspeed kit on it. I want to eventually get a mazdaspeed kit, but dont really want a silver car simply because i like to be able to really bring out some deep rich shine with dark colors. I really like black cars and my mom has a black M6 and has all the options. Its really sweet and I think it looks best in black. The RX-8 has a lot of curves and i think the black hides that. The lighter colors show the curves. My deal is picking the color that is dark enough to be able to get awesome depth and shine from and a color that you can also see the curves with... The red and ti IMHO are the only two colors that do that. Im probably going to go with red simply because i think it looks the best. Just look at every RX-8 in every video and all the pics on Mazda's website and you will see that they are all red. This car is amazing in red. If you dont want red go with the Ti.
RX8by 08-29-2003, 05:15 AM The red is the color. It is very hot and metallic in the sun. Next ti,silver then the rest. Careful with the bi color interior. it is a love hate thing.
aussie77 08-29-2003, 06:17 AM Going for the titanium personally. I think it has a lot of personality - in sunlight it is really a silvery color, but with less light it turns into this brooding dark gray - has a Batmobile look to it. The lighting conditions really play around with this color, plus it won't look dirty easily. Ti all the way!
M-ster 08-29-2003, 07:51 AM How about a Metallic Ice Blue
M-ster 08-29-2003, 07:56 AM I think this is the best colour. You don't worry about dirt, dust, dents, if the car needs polishing, does it goes down well with your wardrobe,....
Just need to worry if someone's gonna bump into you:D
ps: it's called transparent.
Tempt-8-tions 08-29-2003, 08:21 AM Transperent is nice but I like the black on black with dark tinted windows the best!! The Titanium Gray is an awesome color though. Sorry.
Boccelli 08-29-2003, 09:08 AM I got titanium grey. The yellow is just too ricy in my eyes, the red was all too common, black jus hid the details too much, blue was just too bright and the green reminded me too much of mb. So I went with the darker of the greys, the tit. grey.

Good Choice!! I hope you like and enjoy many miles!!
Silver is my choice, with the black and red interior. This color does not show dirt and dust like the dark colors (black is the worst!) A car scratch and dent person recommended this color to me some time ago and it is really true!
Naginata 08-29-2003, 09:29 AM I went with the titanium grey, it makes the car look like less of a toy in my opinion :p
antman_x 08-29-2003, 03:51 PM The ultimate is Velocity Red w/Red&Blk leather. If they made yellow w/yellow interior I would get it.
What's awesome is at night with the red guages and lights with the red interior. it's most impressive but if your going conservative get the Nordic Green or the Ti. Silver's been played out. I think in a few years the Ti will be too. Black will look worn out in 2-3 years unless you're really good at preserving the paint. Red....Classic sports car.
Maximus 08-29-2003, 04:32 PM My input on three colors since they are my favorite:
SILVER
---------
I was a HUGE sunlight silver fan until I saw one in person at night time ... it just didn't click... though it looked very nice in some of the pictures I had seen.
RED
------
Red looks amazing in direct sunlight AND at night also ... BUT ... i didn't like it too much in daylight without direct sunlight e.g. if its a cloudy day or after sunset with some daylight .. but maybe its just me or I should look more closely.
BLUE
------
Blue is a beautiful color IFF it had two tone interior, which i dont think should be there because two tone combo wouldn't work for a blue exterior.
Racer X-8 08-29-2003, 05:08 PM The Velocity Red is way cool.
Like you said, in direct sun or under lights, it has a beautiful sparkle. The very fine mica flakes give that sparkle a not-so-showy sparkle like a coarse metalflake would. It's subtle and elegant and it gives the paint a definite depth. It almost always doesn't sparkle everywhere, just here and there where the light hits it right.
Also like you said, when it's overcast, or simply when there is no direct light source, the sparkle disappears!. That gives the red an altogether different look. You can put your eyes as close to the paint as you can and still will not see the mica flakes. It's like they're gone! Now, I think that's cool!
It's a very appealing color of red too. Just right. I got the red/black leather. VERY modern looking and a bit more showy, but still not too much at all. Just beautiful. Unless I'm receiving a bunch of lies, that's what everybody says when they see it.
:D
Genom 08-29-2003, 05:13 PM Tit. gray here as well. Was going for a black, but when I saw this one I just really liked it more. Fortunately, they had the right color coming in too :D. ANd as far as I know, the only Sport package car over here still.
Blue87Sport 08-30-2003, 12:09 AM Read the thread on Mazda's times for the 1/4 mile. If you follow the link to Rotary News, you will find that Yellow is faster than Silver which is faster than Blue which is faster than Red.
All those mica flakes must weight a lot.:D
Glad to be able to add a bit of science to your decision process. :p
Racer X-8 08-30-2003, 12:27 AM !!!Doh!!!
JeRKy 8 Owner 09-01-2003, 02:00 AM My .02 on popularity of Rx8 colors
The green is chameleon-like and odd. Think its too close to the black though. Its a very weird dark green that even looks dark bluish when enough light is shined on it during the night from certain spots. I bet it will be the least seen Rx8 on the road. I have mixed feelings on this color.
My least fav color is yellow and this one may also be a rare choice. The yellow Rx8 is too light and looks like a highlighter when lots of light is shined on it if you ask wme. I didnt like it at all when I saw it in the showroom just by looking at it from the back. Front of it was okay. Its lighter than the Ferrari/Porsche yellow when it shouldnt be and thats what I think the problem with it is.
The red Rx8 does not work for me. I cant really explain why I feel this way. Its a very exquisite looking red, I just think that all the curves and pieces of black you see on the car take away from the brightness and make it look less appealing to the eye. The red on other sports cars look much more aggressive for some raeson. I would choose it over the previous 2 though and I know a lot of people will love it.
Blue is attractive and looks even better after the sun has gone down w/street lights shining on it. I think that is when it looks its best. The paint has some very glossy and reflective material on it that just makes it shine. During the day it is extra light and it needs to be kept very clean to look sharp. It would have been my second choice until I started looking at it from different angles and started getting different feelings about it. I dont think Mazda is making as many blues as reds though so it will probably be less common than red.
Black is very bold on this car but as a rule I always think black is too basic on all cars and I know it will have to be taken very good care of so I definitely didnt go with it. The back of the black car is so alluring though. My problem with it is that the front grilles on the car and side meshes arent distinguished enough since they are also black. Im sure many will buy this color though for obvious reasons.
Titanium is going to be the most popular color. It is a dark tone yet it looks metallic and light enough to catch your eye and it really defines the grilles and meshes on the car. Ive never seen an exterior with a gray like this one not even on the 350Z. Well maybe Ferrari has a gray close to this actually.
Silver and gray colored cars usually arent this flashy but on the Rx8 they are so sexy looking specially from behind. The light silver has got a very nice look to it too and it is very very reflective. Wasnt aggressive looking enough for me though so I went with the darker gray. Light silver will definitely be very popular as well.

(Nordic Green) I think it will too... that's why I got it.
It looked like a dark navy when we pulled into the lot of the dealership. My friend who was driving me to pick up my 8 was too busy trying to find a parking spot to even notice the car. I said, "Look! there's my baby" She said... "I thought you were getting the Titanium". I said nothing (big grinned). As we got closer she said.... "Oooo, that black looks really sharp on your car." I said nothing (but started to laugh and had hold it back). As we climbed out of her car, she said "It's not as deep of a black as my maxima, but it's still an awesome color." I said, "yes, it is." "Well... bite my ass, you got the green!" I bent over, bit her right butt cheek slightly and proceeded to inspect my new ride.
I've NEVER owened a green car in my life (21 years since I've gotten my Lic and bought my first car)... I can count on one hand of how many green cars I've ridden in as a passenger. I like the darker colors and don't mind washing and waxing. I wanted THIS green.
When people keep making the comment on how Nordic will be the least popular/ordered/purchased color for the RX-8. I think to myself.... good! :D
myrx8 09-01-2003, 08:49 AM I still like red and I still have not seen another red RX8 on the road.
The mica flakes do make the red car, look almost burgandy at sunset.
Wankeler 09-01-2003, 10:27 AM I applaud all those of you gutsy enough to get the red. At first I didn't care for it, too bright. When I saw it in person I changed my tune... but still. I know my lead right foot would get me in way too much trouble. LOL. Been driving a Town car for the last few years and have had 0 points (even though I like triple digit driving). The silver Ho-nda prior to that got me 6 points in 3 years.
I love ALL the colors and had a real hard time picking one... wish I could have one in each color.... oh well... guess that's what my $5 a week powerball lotto habit is for. ;)
Hayseed 09-01-2003, 11:34 AM The green in the brochure was pretty awful. In person it is a class act. I ditched my pre-ordered titanium and went with the green as soon as I saw it. It's dark (almost black) green in some lights, blue in others. On close inspection, the paint seems to have gold, turquoise and even purple flecks. With black interior, it rocks.

Have fun keeping it looking clean.... (compared to the titanium) :D
myrx8 09-01-2003, 05:16 PM I still think a red car is easier to keep clean then a black or green.
Trust me, I have a black TL and a green SUV.
But from what owners have said about the Nordic Green, I may need to see one in person.
The red is truely awesome, everyone comments on the colour.
It looks soooo silky at night in the sunset, and looks bright from far but you can see the gold flakes from close up.
I really got bored of the red photos and didn't want red, ANYTHING but red, I said. Then I bought RED!
It is easy to keep clean too :)
I like the titanium as well, it is a nice colour but it wasn't dark enough for me, my last car was silver and I didn't want silver again.
The blue is nice, very bright in the day.
myrx8 09-01-2003, 09:43 PM About time someone agreed with me.
