View Full Version : Just back from first track day!
ILIV48 04-01-2005, 04:21 AM "Whoa!"
What a day.... loved it. And a whole new appreciation for my 8.
Started off pretty slow and with the stability control constantly kicking in. Then drove with the instructors for some much needed pointers and by the end of the day was circulating the track at much higher speeds than I even though I could after the first few laps :D :D
Atridge was also there so we spent some laps following each other although with his extra experience at Sandown he was lapping quicker than me. He had the confidence to carry more speed through the corners.
The good part was I finally got proof the Lightened flywheel is of benefit because on the straights atridge could not stay with me as my 8 would pull away and when I was behind I would pull him in... even with his greater cornering speeds.
Down the main straight I was hitting speeds of over 200. It is fantastic when you are doing between 180-200 and a Ferrari 360 Modena, then a Lambo followed by a Ferrari 360 Spider blast past you all nose to tail. Friggin awesome :D
I am still buzzing from the day. Guys if you have never done anything like this before you have to. I am just about to reserve my palce for the next one!
takahashi 04-02-2005, 04:21 AM Sounds great...
I can't even pull my 8 though to over 200 at the main straight. I guess I need lightened flywheel pretty soon.
Are you coming on the July one?
ILIV48 04-02-2005, 12:12 PM Are you coming on the July one?
For sure... I'll be going to all of them from now on.
I'm also considering taking my next holidays to coincide with one of Lukes Eastern Creek days and drive up to NSW for a weekend and do it to. I am hooked! :D
takahashi 04-02-2005, 05:19 PM I'm also considering taking my next holidays to coincide with one of Lukes Eastern Creek days and drive up to NSW for a weekend and do it to. I am hooked!
Oh mine
You are really nuts. It is all my fault :p. Hope Danielle will forgive me for that.
If also we will form a team to go to all the track days availble ok? :p? The Project D like in the cartoon (like Takahashi is involved) LOL :D
I was planned to go to April 10 Masarati Day but I was thinking I should not burn my brand new Michellin. I will be ready with a new set of tyre and rim for July. July 19 is the next one from Luke.
I am not planning to go interstate with new tyre (unless Danielle will carry the set of tyre for me :p). But I think I should conquer all the track in Vic (*Sandown, Calder, Philip Island, Winton, etc) first.
Sounds fun and I have a track partner now.... I should introduce you to my friend Stephen Chan (he drives the white Integra on our meet) and he is a mad track fan.
Richard Paul 04-02-2005, 05:46 PM Hey Taka how far do you think that would be for me to go? I'd like to go with you guys. I could try out my products. Do they do those things around here?
In case you didn't get the hint, I found a car. All the hagaling and paper works not done yet but it looks close. I'm gona pay him his price if I have to 'cause I really want it. I like yellow and it's yellow. Has 6200 miles on it. 3 months old, guys getting a divorce. Fully virgin car, still has paper plate on it.
And they stoped making yellow, right. So it's rare, yes. I have no shifter to put in it, all out again!!!
Also bought a big drive for a new blower dyno, I'll get some pics. This thing was a hell of a find, a real 100% duty cycle unit. It has 20 hp with vari drive, two spindle out put, the high speed one goes 5000-11000 rpm. All in one big cast iron base, 1400lbs. The gearbox even has water jackets for coolant. I'll just build some brackets on it to test blowers. To bad your so far away Hymee or i'd let you borrow it. Be real interesting to see the difference between the two blowrs on the same test rig.
Do I sound excited??? Lots of projects now. Most of all Got to get myself a shifter built real quickly.
OOps! did I in my excitment hyjack your thread Taka? I'm sorry but I had to tell someone.
takahashi 04-02-2005, 06:34 PM Well we are in a drawing board for a RX-8 only club.
It will be either in CAMS club (proper racing club) style or with an organiser like Event O'Neill or BOTH! :D
That is Luke's response last month :p:
"Hi Stephen,
>
> I would happily offer my services to the club to arrange an RX-8 only
> day for them. The benefit of having me run the day, is that not one
> person needs to become responsible for the organisation and running of
> the event. Your members simply need to sign up and pay with me and I
> will look after the rest. I will even create a bespoke invitation to be
> posted on your site for members to download and fax back to me.
>
> A lot of car clubs discuss the whole track day thing, but many never
> actually run one as invariably someone needs to take responsibility to
> get the event off the ground. Not to mention chase everyone for the
> money!"
Stuart, we will wait until darco to come back in the next couple of weeks and we will get it off the ground.
BTW, RP, you can fly down with your product and be our special guest on the ground. :p

Congrats on your car and your choice of Lightining Yellow it Rocks

You are really nuts. It is all my fault :p. Hope Danielle will forgive me for that.
Sounds fun and I have a track partner now.... I should introduce you to my friend Stephen Chan (he drives the white Integra on our meet) and he is a mad track fan.
Yeah I am hooked. I have been looking for a true Hobby/Interest as I work way to hard/long each week and need something to motivate me. Thanks Taka I have now found it.
Danielle does not hate you YET!
She is happy for me to do these days but I have not told her yet that I will more than likely need to buy some new alloys and track rubber so as to make it more cost effective. My poor stock bridgestones looked not too bad at the end of the day but in the last day of driving I have discovered they are now a little more slippery on the road. Maybe they will come back a little with some more KM on the road.
I thinked I overcooked them a little late Friday as I had a Boxster who was really trying to catch and pass me round the track but I was able to keep him the same distance behind me for 4 laps. In that 4 laps I caught & passed a 2.8 litre 6 cyclinder BMW Z3. These last laps were a hoot and the guy in the boxster came up to me in pit lane afterwards to say he had a lot of fun trying to catch but just couldn't close the gap. He too enjoyed passing the Z3 :D But I think I pushed the tyres 1-2 laps further than I should have :o
I can see myself joining you on as many of the drive days I can squeeze in. But does the team have to be like one of those Japanese cartoons. They look funny and I don't really want astro boy stickers on the side of my car :p :p :D
ILIV48 04-02-2005, 09:54 PM Hey Taka how far do you think that would be for me to go? I'd like to go with you guys. I could try out my products. Do they do those things around here?
Hi Richard, if you like maybe I could fly you down to AUS (as long as you like cattle class) for the next Sandown day. You can bring one of your superchargers and install on my car (free of course) then we can test it on the track. I would even let you drive a couple of laps :D :D :D Sounds like a great deal does'nt it... for me that is :D
Congrats on the car... But yellow :p How did Lock & Load brainwash you on colour choice from such a great distance :p :D
After the track day it is very evident that after some new rubber your short shifter is a necessity. The stock change bulked a little too much going into 3rd!
Richard Paul 04-02-2005, 10:17 PM One other thing for you guys that take your cars to the track. Yellow is an easy color to spot for your crew. Black and grey cars seem to desolve into the blacktop from a distance. It is harder for the timing crew to see you or your pit guys to see your coming in.
Just one more argument for your arsenal L&L.

BTW, Taka how was your shifting during the track day? You miss any gears? You're the first one to track test it.
atridge 04-03-2005, 10:04 PM What a day, how often do RX8's get out numbered by lambo's and ferrari's, especially one's that are modded  :D
Taka, are you going to start looking for a flywheel? Maybe we can try and pull 200km/h down the front straight as well
I'll post some photos today and maybe a small video clip if I have the time.
Atridge
takahashi 04-03-2005, 10:16 PM Not in a hurray for a lightened flywhell although. Although I have found what I like.. from Fujita engineering.
How much is it from Promaz Stuart? I think it is about $1000 installed. I am not sure but I am sure Stuart has told me that before.
I am more into getting though the corners right. Since I am going to attack Winton sooner or later so suspension is next after semislick.
I will put FEED flywheel, Exedy single clutch (or carbon if I have money) and FEED 4.7 final gear and will beat a JDM DC5 at Winton hehe.

Taka are you going to take me to Winton with you... Pleeeaaasssse :(
I would have thought a flywheel would be good for Winton as the tighter the track the more important throttle response and acceleration out of corners... But you know me I luv my flywheel :D :D
But best mod for this car is definately learn to drive better!
Lock & Load 04-04-2005, 12:27 AM ILIV48
The best mod for Taka is to loose 15 - to 20kg then he wont need a lighter flywheel ;)

takahashi 04-04-2005, 12:38 AM SHit that is right.
I just came back from a 30 min walk
I will give you a yell when I go to a track day Stuart :D.
There is Honda club at Calder this Saturday but unfortunately I am not free. Damn :o
Not too worry I will be fired up in July. July 19 Event ONeill and July 26 for Winton with Marserati club.
Luke said there will be another Sandown day before July 19. I will be going to that too.
ILIV48 04-04-2005, 12:58 AM Luke said there will be another Sandown day before July 19. I will be going to that too.
Yeah he mentioned this on Friday arvo but said he could not get the track, already fully booked. Luke said he was on a standby list just in case there was a drop out or something like that.
For those club days like 'maserati club' don't you need fire extinguisher & stuff like that installed in your car?
takahashi 04-04-2005, 03:03 AM Oh ic... he better be quick..... he meant the CHEAP dates are all gone - of course there are expensive (high season) dates.
Maserati club is CAMS club and you need all these shit. It is not as fun as Event ONeill. It is actually holding one in Sandown 10 April, so I am not going. The good thing is they are running in the weekends and they are running all kinds of tracks. I guess they most likely do the short Winton (without the long :p straight). It will be very twisty and you will not go over 3rd gear.
We can do the fire extinguisher thing together and tie down with a nylon line. Not hard to do.

Maybe he might consider a day at Phillip Island :D July is too far away :(
ILIV48 04-04-2005, 04:17 AM Maybe he might consider a day at Phillip Island :D July is too far away :(
We spoke to Luke about phillip island as well. Too expensive & too difficult.
They want $8000-$10,000 for the day. They also require 2 paramedics and if there is going to be more than 4 cars on the track at once they also require a flag marshall at every corner.
As you can read... Too hard!!!
Besides July gives us time for our tires to heal! :D :D :D
Hymee 04-04-2005, 04:17 AM I keep an extinguisher in the glove box, with a big soft rag wrapped around it to cushion it.
Cheers,

mmm looks like we need to organise a Brisbane track day. :D
The last one was fantastic with a good turnout.

What a F&*@ing Brillant Idea!!!!!!
Damn it it is the same person came up with supercharging the 8 :o
Atridge, it is exhausting for your tyre to do more than 5 track day. The thread may be alright. But the grip is not there. So I think you should invest on second set just for track mate. If you speak to Matt Coleman or Luke ONeill they will strongly advise that.
Hey did Matt turned up Friday?? How is he going?

I noticed that Taka, my car was virtually drifting around some of the turns towards the end of the day. I am looking to get some mags and another set of tyres. I don't think street tyres are worth the money when you take them on track. I might do the same as you and get semi-slicks but before I do that I will need brake pads. Where did you pick up the MS pads? Did you also change your brake lines to stainless steel as well?
Matt was there. At the end of the day he was running around looking for his car keys and they turned up under my passenger seat
I didn't know he drives a Land Cruiser with stickers that say MCR (Matt Coleman Racing)
By the way, the new flash makes the car feel much better on the track. The fuel economy was much better than previous days and there seems to be a little more torque in the mid-range.
Also, we found out that the Auto RX8 maxed out at 160km/h on the straight.

rx-afied 04-04-2005, 10:02 AM 170 my friend :P
still was awsome,
especially turns 6 and 7 the satisfaction generated through there is priceless.
How can i display the pics so everyone can see, I take it i need a site to host it from, that sucks...
We need another track day! like next week heh
Hymee 04-04-2005, 04:45 PM ^^^^^ Very nice pics, especially the red. Got it in a really nice stance.
Cheers,

takahashi 04-04-2005, 05:20 PM These are great pics!
Hymee
Peter Kotsa (professional photographer) is there to take pics, if you prepare to pay. We probably get Josh (I assume it is you rx-afried) to take our pics.
Atridge
Semislick is good and I can hook you up for a set when I get mine in June. There are 2 other people interested already and we are all going to Event Oneill in July.
Brake pads are from Japanparts. I think MS pads are the best for stock rotor. Project Mu have new ones and I heard they are not bad either (I think they are model number: HC+ and Level 900).
No Brake line needed unless you are very serious the Autoexe one and the MazdaSpeed ones are the best ones people use.
Cannot wait until track day again.
ILIV48 04-04-2005, 09:30 PM Peter was not there. The photographer there was Jules. He does the Sydney days. I have already ordered my photo's in high res on a CD. Costs just $55. I had a chat with him so he knew I was going to get the CD so in the afternoon session he took lots of me. On his laptop some of them looked really good
TAKA - how much are we looking at for some semi slicks. Considering I also need to buy some alloy wheels so as I can free the stock ones up for the semi slicks, I am trying to work out how much I need and where in the hell I am going to get it from! The wife will not be happy.
takahashi 04-04-2005, 09:53 PM That is ok $55!
Semi slicks in Potenza RE55s I was quoted for $380 each corner, I have one friend of mine interested and atridge too. One of my other friend is interested on these rims. Pics from Murix. Thanks mate.

The rim and tyre is about $4K. I am going to lure more of you to buy tyre from him to give us all a big discount.
ILIV48 04-04-2005, 09:58 PM What if we bought 17inch rims for track days. Rims will be cheaper, lighter and the tyres would also be considerably cheaper too you would think.
Just trying to think of ways to keep costs down a little and put into even more track days. Damn you Taka look at what you have done to me....Ahhhh!
takahashi 04-04-2005, 10:17 PM Your front rotor may be JUST ok for a 17"
I prefer 18" and I use the stock wheel for $245.
17" save on slick... my friend Integra got the slick from the same place for $320. So not much of a saving. It is up to you though.
I have told the shop about it. They said the stuff are in stock and will be available overnight. I have told him my plan of getting it at the end of June and use the semi slick for 2 weekend on the road to rub the first layer off.
Hymee 04-04-2005, 10:24 PM Yeah - that is a good idea. Betta check the clearances on the front rotors. But I guess they should be OK as you can get the smaller wheels in the US.
Cheers,
Hymee.
atridge 04-04-2005, 10:36 PM Looks like we have lots of interest in track days here. I think the RX8 CAMS club would be great!!!!!
takahashi 04-04-2005, 11:07 PM Looks like we have lots of interest in track days here. I think the RX8 CAMS club would be great!!!!!
Draco is the one that puts his hand up for organising one.
How there are at least 4 constant member: me, you, ILIV48 ... we have to get more people interested though.
Hey the guy sells the tyre said it is a VERY special price. They are the Potenza RE55S in 245/40-18. You can check them out on www.potenza.jp. Stuart, he said he can get other size too, easy.
Lets get them together :) I will organise a group buy interstate but I think it is pointless since the freight cost will be the same as it were RRP interstate. So a group buy in Melbourne.
There are 4 people interested so far: Taka, my friend with GTR, ILIV48, atridge....
ILIV48 04-04-2005, 11:29 PM I had those Enkei's RP03 on my last car. They are an awesome wheel. Light and very strong. They were 17inch (17x8) with 225 Toyo's it cost $2200 for all 4. I was actually thinking about getting some in 18's for my 8.
Loved those wheels
takahashi 04-04-2005, 11:47 PM I buy a set of wheel for mainly that I have another set for track. It is BONUS in this case that RP03 actually looks great, is at an awesome price + it is light :D
I cannot wait until June.
ILIV48 04-05-2005, 02:17 AM I will probably have to do July 19 on road tyres. I just don't think I'll be able to come up with $4000.00 for extra set of wheels and semi slicks as I will also be very very close to having to replace the current tyres... Another $1600.00.
Danielle will not (no chance) let me spend that much.
I was planning on using my tax refund for the new wheels and semi slicks. So even if I put it in July 1st I doubt I would have the check in time. :( :( :(
takahashi 04-05-2005, 02:22 AM ok..... :o
Are you still on RE040?
What is your mileage now?
ILIV48 04-05-2005, 02:28 AM Yeah still on the Shitty RE040! Done 21,000km. Friday has seemed to beat them up a bit though. They seem to be a bit slippery on the road (in the dry)
Going to do everything I can though to try and get the wheels & tyres before July. I will start working on Danielle tonight. Wish me luck, Or maybe more appropriately... Pray for me!
takahashi 04-05-2005, 02:42 AM I will start working on Danielle tonight.
hehehe. Good luck. You know, milk with raw egg helps with libido.

I cannot recommend these track days any more highly.

Thanks ILIV48, I understood you guys were discussing (or should I say raving :D ) about the Sandown day but I thought I had read somewhere in the thread that a Sydney day was also being organised.
I checked out the O'Neill site but the only Sydney drive day I could find on it was the Burrows Day which is impossible to get in to. Am I missing something (usually the case :o )?
How do others feel about trying to get a day at Eastern Creek organised for us Sydney-siders (and of course anyone else who wants to travel to be in it)?
Gibbo 04-06-2005, 03:34 AM Revolver, th burrows drive days are easy enough to get into if you want. I always get emails from luke aou vacancies up until a week before.
If you want to go let me know and I will give you luke's number and he can put you on the list.

Thanks Gibbo for the inside drill. The website kept mentioning "invitation only" and "sold out" so I figured it was a no go.
Please PM the details and I'll get myself on the list. Must admit though - am track day virgin :o :o :o . Is it suitable for those of us who have much to learn in that dept or should I go and do something more basic first?
ILIV48 04-08-2005, 03:26 AM Theses days are perfect for us new to this type of experience as you can get one of the instructors to come out with you and start teaching. I learnt so much from just the one day.
