View Full Version : Okay now that we almost have cars.. what about the music!
Hercules 06-22-2003, 11:07 PM I have made a preliminary CD for my first-listen in the RX-8. I combed thru my 11 gigs of MP3s to find songs I'd like to listen to, and my list is below... But I need help!
Okay, here's the rules though... no rap, R&B, country, or other pointless/stupid music.
I like rock, metal, grunge, alternative, pop, etc... I like *some* rap and R&B but my choices in that are so slim it's not worth pointing any songs out to me as I'll likely hate all the ones pointed out.
I am working on a compilation for my new car, what I want to listen to when I get in the car for the first time.
Here's my current list, and you can make comments or swap some out. However, the first two songs are DEFINATE and won't move from position (for obvious reasons :))
Blur - Song 2 (woo hoo!)
U2 - Beautiful Day (cuz it will be :D)
Coldplay - Don't Panic (we live in a beautiful world...)
Prodigy - Breathe (if I feel I need to kick ass!)
Sting - Desert Rose (cuz Sting r0x)
Bjork - Bachelorette (great music, hard to get into tho)
Bryan Adams - Summer of '69 (I like it...)
Soul Decision - Faded (sounds so 80ish and has a good beat)
Coldplay - Spies (my fave Coldplay song)
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Can't Stop (driving ! :) )
Radiohead - Street Spirit (great song)
Bryan Adams - Run to You (I will run to the car :P )
SR-71 - Let it Whip (great song, great beat, funny as hell)
The Cars - Drive (*grin*)
Bon Jovi - Runaway (I am running!)
Tatu - 30 Minutes (thought it was cool)
Incubus - Drive (*grin again*)
Eminem - Sing for the Moment (good beat/words)
So make suggestions.. but like I said, the first two or three songs are DEFINATE. If you can find a better song that I'd like in place of something... please suggest it.
As you can tell as well, I have a very 80s personality to me, and if you have 80s suggestions that I might like, I'd probably prefer them :)
Thanks all!

8_wannabe 06-23-2003, 12:14 AM Great songlist. I'm a fellow 80's rocker like you. Here's a few suggestions:
Don Henley - Boys of Summer (cuz you will be one) (Lyrics) (http://www.davemcnally.com/lyrics/DonHenley/TheBoysofSummer.asp)
Sammy Johns - Chevy Van ("Better keep your eyes on the road son, better sloooow this vehicle down!")
Curtis Mayfield - Move On Up (pre-80's but very hip and upbeat like ur car. It's on the Beckham soundtrack.) (Lyrics) (http://www.stlyrics.com/lyrics/54volume1/moveonup.htm)
Tom Petty - Learning to Fly and/orInto the Great Wide Open (Lyrics) (http://www.built2last.de/greatwideopen.html)
[Edit] Golden Earring - Radar Love ("I been driving all night my hands wet on the wheel." (Lyrics) (http://www.everydaycompanion.com/lyrics/songs/radar_love.asp)
Sorry about the Chevy reference but it's a cool song. If I think of more I'll post again.
From "Move on up": Remember your dreams are your only schemes; So keep on pushing.
Take nothing less, not even second best." Says it all.
ibfubar2000 06-23-2003, 12:23 AM how about "zoom-zoom"?
santino 06-23-2003, 12:29 AM i was thinking of doing what you did Herc, in making a CD for the 8.
agree with your choices in Coldplay, radiohead and Bjork.
i would put in the Strokes--Hard to Explain, and Someday
The Cure--Just Like Heaven, Mint Car, and In Between Days
more Coldplay--In My Place (in the 8!), Yellow (especially if i had a yellow 8)
or just bring my iPod with everything on it, then run it through the radio with a FM transmitter.

8_wannabe 06-23-2003, 08:16 AM And how could we forget the obvious: Tracy Chapman - I Gotta Fast Car.
Edit : Ok, maybe Chapman didn't go over too good (critic's comments below.)
How 'bout ZZ Top - Sharp Dressed Man ("Lookin' sharp lookin' for love.... Cuz every girl crazy 'bout a sharp dressed man.)
Hercules 06-23-2003, 08:28 AM Originally posted by 8_wannabe

red_base 95 06-23-2003, 08:36 AM Here are a few select hard driving songs:
Ozzy Osbourne - Crazy Train
Gin Blossoms - Allison Road
Boston - Long Time
Derek and the Dominos - Layla
Rush - Red Barchetta (previously mentioned, but worthy of a 2nd)
Lynard Skynard - Sweet Home Alabama ("Turn it UP")
That list may date me, but these are all classic songs to burn the pavement to. There are so many other choices, but pick some music that gets YOU pumping, and enjoy the drive.
If you're not familiar with any of these, they are sure to be readily available via the web. Most of these I burned from LP's!
TreknMazda 06-26-2003, 01:08 PM I'm thinking the first drive may take however long the 3 CD set from Led Zepplin "How the West Was Won" takes to play. That should test the Bose audio, don't you think? :D
Ahura 06-26-2003, 01:19 PM Even though I'll be getting the MP3 player, I think I'll be playing a good ole' fashioned audio CD. It's a good trance mix. Here's the tracklist:
Aerial Lift Mix - Feb 2003
Chemical Brothers - Star Guitar
Underworld - 2 Days Off
Ferry Corsten - Punk
Oscar G and Ralph Falcon - Dark Beat
Telepopmusik - Just Breathe
Hall and Oates - Can't Go for That
Gouryella - Wahalla
Frou Frou - Breathe In
Divine Inspiration - The Way
Marc Et Claude - Tremble
Marco V - Godd
Pafferdorf - Be Cool
Cosmic Gate - Exploration of Space
Aquagen - Hard To Say I'm Sorry
T.A.T.U. - All The Things She Said
D.J. Sammy - Boys of Summer
http://duluthchiro.com/music/default.htm
Just to clarify, I don't know this dude.
zoom44 06-26-2003, 01:25 PM hey who does that "WOOO-HOOOO!!" song i hear on someone's car commercials? i'm thinking that has to be on the playlist.
ReX-8 06-26-2003, 01:56 PM Isn't that "Song 2" by Blur?
Cihuuy 06-26-2003, 03:26 PM How about...
Suede - Beautiful Ones
Any Lenny Kravits
Santana
Incubus - Drive (accoustic) i like this one as well ;)
Incucub - I miss u (accoustic)
and since i like Acid Jazz and Disco music try to download these
Lazy Dog CD
Sade - By your side (Ben Watt Remix)
Jon Cutler - you groove me
Hermes House Band - Cant take my eyes of u...
if you have the Bose speaker in your car, then its good to listen to Jazz and alternative music. Anything wiv ambiance is good as well... cause i have the Bose accoustimas system... :D
Dance music and R&B wouldnt sound good tho... unless you add your own sub/subwoffer...
but i can be wrong since i never heard the bose in the rx8...
enjoy Herc... ;)
wakeech 06-26-2003, 03:41 PM yes, yes it is.
anyways, to stand apart (Herc, your music is gay: Bryan Adams?? STING???? gaaawd... ;)) i'll go with a few of my faves:
Jesse Cook: Rattle and Burn, Freefall, That's Right
White Stripes (anything)
both disc's by Broken Social Scene
Weezer: anything... it's so good i don't care... well, Buddy Holly for sure (great sing along song :D)
Bush/ BushX (depending on the market, i think): Breathe
Green Day
Murphy Luzod (a local East Van electronic artist)
Missy Elliot: i can't deny that i love Gossip Folk
Vivaldi: his chello concerto #4(??), four seasons suite (duh)
Bach: just about everything...
Handel: Messiah (for the holidays), Water Music, Royal Fireworks
... i dunno, lots others... i should get back to work and stop thinking ;)
RX-Nut 06-26-2003, 03:56 PM Screw that.. I'll be pounding 16 tracks of ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM
neofreak 06-26-2003, 04:06 PM I ripped the music off of:
Outrun (Arcade version)
Ridge Racer
Ridge Racer Revolution
Ridge Racer Type-4
Rage Racer
Wipeout 1 is good to listen to too. (The European version of the soundtrack, not the US one.)
ReX-8 06-26-2003, 05:04 PM I gotta get the Soundtracks of Initial D Stage 1, 2, and Extra Stage, Initial D the Movie, and Initial D Euro Beat...

THAT IS WICKED!!!
y'know?? my favourite Mazda-"themed" music is the Mazda Music from Gran Tursimo one (y'know, you click on "MAZDA" to go and do stuff with Mazda cars...)... it was before i knew the rotary, it was before i could recognize that even though the RX-7 couldn't make anywhere near the power of the Supra in that game it could still be as fast/faster: i loved that track. :D
budaman 06-26-2003, 07:02 PM I can't believe no one has put in Stranglehold by Ted Nugent. For cruzin you need Low Rider by War. Then there's Eddie Moneys Shakin
Toadman 06-26-2003, 07:17 PM LOL, Buda!
"I've got you in a stranglehold baby, you best get outta the way!"
Excusemepardonme, rotary coming thru. Make a hole, people.
:D
Even though I'll be getting the MP3 player, I think I'll be playing a good ole' fashioned audio CD. You can fit over 200-250 songs per disc or more if you burn MP3's instead of the 16-17 song limit wav format with CD. The CD changer is obsolete with an MP3 player. ;)
javahut 06-26-2003, 09:56 PM Man, you guys got great taste in cars, but your music selections... :o???? :p :p ;)
Sum o my cruzin' 8 picks...
Rock N Roll...
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Xtra Acme ; Plastic Fang
Electronica...
Amon Tobin - Permutation
Pest - Necessary Measures
The Avalanches - Since I Met You
Jazzed New Orleans HipHop Noise...
Garage A Trois - Emphasizer
Real Jazz...
Kenny Garrett - Standard Of Language
High Octane Guitar/B3 Jazz...
Danny Gatton/Joey DeFrancesco - Relentless
Nu Blues...
Rick Holmstrom - Hydraulic Groove
of course, you gotta have...
Fatboy Slim - You've Come a Long Way, Baby ; Halfway Between the Gutter & the Stars
& finally... the definitive oldy for 8 cruzin'... (be careful... it'll make you drive way too fast)... "Highway Star" from the remastered "Made In Japan" by Deep Purple.
Oh yeah... and how about "Jesus Built My Hot Rod" by Ministry.
ggreen29 06-26-2003, 10:12 PM Actually for the first half-hour or so I'll be listening to the Renesis performance of Rotary Duet accompanied by the Intake Sextet with Helmholtz tuning! That should lead to A Symphony of Rushing Wind, and during the exciting parts I'll be playing my flugelhorn!
Once I rejoin the real world (if ever); everything by the Stone Roses, starting with She Bangs the Drums, through the rest of their shimmery guitar debut album, bounce to their prequel album for a more poppish feel, then finish with their hard rock/blues Resurrection. If that's too much TSR dump the last album.
Then to Guadalcanal Diary's Gilbert Takes the Wheel and Ghost on the Road. Then selections from 2x4 and Flip-Flop.
Since somebody said no country so I'll have to challenge that with EmmyLou Harris' version of Born to Run (no not that one...the one by Paul Kennerly), then slide on over to The Allman Brothers Band's Jessica.
For Wakawakawakeech I'll finish with the Canadian band Tragically Hip and their album Fully and Completely. (Maybe I'll have to wait 'til the engine's broken in before I play this...)
AutoStrada 06-27-2003, 04:09 AM A good car needs good tunes, here's what gets me going in my mom's Lexus, and will do so when an 8 (mine or otherwise) comes into my life.
Saves the Day - Sell my old clothes, Im off to Heaven
Finch - what it is to burn
The Strokes- Someday
Jimmy Eat World - Sweetness, Praise Chorus
The neptunes v Jason nevins- Rockstar remix
The Beastie Boys - intergalactic; So Whatcha Want
Coldplay - in my place, clocks
Beyonce - Crazy in Love

If I could figure out how to rip the music out of Gran Turismo I'd do it. Ridge Racer Type-4 I had to get from the Sound Track CD, Outrun from the Saturn version's audio track (not the dreamcast one, its not redbook audio)
Any other games that would be good?

HalleysComet 06-27-2003, 07:35 PM I am a HUGE Dave Matthews Band fan......his older stuff much more so than the newer, but still..all good. I, of course, will have a good mix of Dave Matthews Music in my custom disc of tunes for my first drive in the 8. There is one song in the mix that is not typical of me at all......I don't normally care for Justin Timberlake's music or music like that, but......I must say......I like his Rock Your Body tune.....good groove tune, so don't laugh at that one.
Also, some tunes from the new Charlie's Angels Full Throttle. ( Its a girl thing)
I am also including my favorite classical tune (yes, I like classical music too so I must include at least one)
The Best of What's Around (DMB)
Ants Marching (DMB)
Feel Good Time (Pink)
Wake Up (Rage Against The Machine)

Crash (DMB)
Where Are You Going (DMB)
A Thousand Miles (Vanessa Carlton)

Time of Your Life (Green Day)
I always christen my new cars with:
Yello - Oh Yeah (a la Ferris Bueller)

I haven't sorted them all out yet, but a short list of songs I may want on there.
Couple of new suggestions off the Matrix Reloaded soundtrack:

never will the music of Super Mario Bros. (1 and 3) be far from memory... it's like a tattoo of my childhood... hahaha... favourite ever. the Lox sampled SMB 1 for some stupid song... only heard it a few times, but i thought it was cool only because they sampled my favourite Nintendo game...
ummm... the height of 16 bit sound (for me) was FF6... all the themes, so masterfully orchestrated with so few voices, with such bad replication... ahhhh... that's my fave SNES music...
easily: FF7+FF8 had some killer beats that would actually be good for driving...
the FF7 Grav Bike music, and ummm... i dunno... can't think: too late.
in FF8, for sure Laguna's fight music... well, again a longer mix.
moogle 06-28-2003, 02:36 AM There are tons of songs to choose, but on a new car I would choose...
LUDACRIS:
GET OUT THE WAY!
Jump120MPH 06-28-2003, 07:44 AM I always thought Kick Start My Heart by Motley Crue was a good one.

Check out the Korobeiniki (Tetris Theme Song) by Ozma. I love that song.
javahut 06-28-2003, 09:42 PM OK... here's some electronica that would make way cool background music for an RX-8 commercial... or for cruisin'. Maybe stick a sample of the "zoom-zoom-zoom" line in there somewhere?
(you'll need hi speed connection or it's gonna take awhile)
Amon Tobin - Bridge (http://home.austin.rr.com/javahut/MP3/AmonTobin-Bridge.mp3)
Amon Tobin - Get Your Snack On (http://home.austin.rr.com/javahut/MP3/AmonTobin-GetYourSnackOn.mp3)
Boozehound 06-29-2003, 12:37 AM Zeppelin
- Achilles' Last Stand
- Kashmir (no horrible covers either, just the real deal)
- Stairway.
Hendrix
- Along the Watchtower
Pink Floyd
- Run Like Hell
- Another Brick in the Wall (part 2)
Sammy Hagar
- I Can't Drive 55
and if you find yourself at a stoplight with another import, there's always Carl Douglas' "Kung Fu Fighting"

norats 06-29-2003, 01:15 PM That's easy for me....in true socal style, it'll be Satriani's "Surfing with the Alien" going down 94east towards Tecate with tons of turns, staights, & no cops. I can't wait!!!
For a good sound check I always have used something with a very crisp snare drum like Everclear....then for solid bass check...Back in Black
Then over to XM's ch41 "Da Boneyard", like z-rock, only better!
Please include you favorite test drive road as it is just as much a part of that first driving experience as the music!
Efini 8 07-04-2003, 02:58 AM its all about Metallica baby! I love all music, but what gets my fired up in a car, is trance/dance and especially heavy metal. ROCK ON!
Anything by King Crimson with Bill Bruford on skins, or Kings X by Kings X or Quadrophenia by the 'Oo.

TreknMazda 07-07-2003, 03:25 PM After reading the Aussie review of the RX-8 and their comment about "suicide doors" maybe the first song should be the Theme from M*A*S*H (with vocals). ;)

j1mb0x99 07-08-2003, 10:48 AM In my opinion good punk music is the best driving music.
If I made a cd it would be heavy in punk (offspring, millencolin, bad religion...) Also, to mix it up a bit, I would add in a couple of good motivating rock songs (linkin park, social distortion), one or two good techno tracks, and a couple of good rap songs.
Its impossible to list exaxtly what I would put though, there are so many combinations that could fit on a cd, but it would definately follow that formula.
