Hey all, my parents just went to our insurance agent today to adjust some stuff, and while they were there my dad asked them how much it would cost for me to insure an RX-8 under my name (23, male, NJ). The agent asked him if it was for a 4-door coupe, or a Shinka. He said it made a big difference and that the Shinka would cost more to insure. Anyone know why? I can't imagine how much more it would cost, the regular coupe cost about $4800 a year for me to insure, and they said male drivers in NJ don't even get a break at 25 years old anymore, now it's 29...eh....thanks

My god!! I am glad I don't live in NJ. I live in Dallas, Texas, and I only have to pay $746 per year to insure mine. That is outrageous.

Shinka cost more, has the extra suspension package... so they think you might drive faster... etc?

:P

oh ok. Yea it is pretty ridiculous. I also have 4 points on there, so that adds about $400/6 months they said. So without it it would be around $4000/year.

wow! Even my 59 year old father pays about $1000 a year to insure his cavalier! lol

I'm 52 and pay 53.00/mo on the 8- no tickets or accidents in 12 years. It also pays to have your house insurance as well as the other house, other cars, boat and Harley with the same company.

funny, i pay $2900/year in NJ, no points, no accidents. I'm 25. I was paying 1800/year, then all of the sudden, it went up to 2900. I asked them why, and they said because they had me classified as being over 35 years old the whole time. I guess the fact that I dont get a break for being 25 really causes my insurance to stay high. Thanks for the info.

In Tx, I pay $622/year which equates to roughly $52/month. Full coverage, 29 yo, married, no accidents, tickets, etc... Glad I live in Texas.

$870 in NC and am 25 with a clean record, don't know about the Shinka being more to insure, but I wouldn't doubt it since it is more expensive and a limited edition model. My old SVT Focus which was limited to 14,000 made in 3 years cost $1000 a year to cover with the same amount of coverage.

I hate my insurance company. I found out why my insurance was jacked from $600 to $775 for 6 months: They said my good student discount was taken away when I turned 25 and my being in graduate school doesn't matter. WTF?! I am the same exact person as before- no tickets, no accidents. Doesn't make any sense.

Regional insurance costs are mostly based on fraud claims. NY/NJ is just a cesspool of insurance fraud, and that cost gets spread around to all the drivers, honest or not.
