View Full Version : forum response time
91vert 06-19-2003, 10:09 PM Is it just me, or has anybody else had problems over the last few days with the forum server not responding when you try to open or reply to a thread?
This thing has been almost unusable the past few nights. Seems like it will be clipping along at top speed, and then you hit a brick wall. Wait about 5 minutes and try again and its fine.
I have a cable modem and no problems getting to other web sites when this thing is acting up for me, so I know it is not my PC or internet connection.
Just wondering.......I know the forum administrator personally and will call him to find out what the deal is if anybody else is having problems.
khoney 06-19-2003, 10:16 PM Ditto.
ZoomZoom 06-19-2003, 10:20 PM Same here... unfortunately this is the slowest web site that I frequent. :(

This is getting real bad and is only going to get worse
as the RX-8's hit the streets if something is not done.
ibfubar2000 06-19-2003, 10:25 PM it is not your computer ir is the web server. i think they just have a small band width and it is a very popular web page especially as we get closer to the delivery date. the only thing they can do is upgrade to a bigger bandwidth which means more money which means more donations... i kinda rememeber a thread somewhere mentoining donatiions for the bandwidth. i may be wrong but i think this is correct.
TJRX8 06-19-2003, 10:43 PM Same here, day or night...sometimes good sometimes bad.
I donated and never heard a word about it.
i've noticed it's a bunch faster if you turn off the autodownloads of images, and if you turn off all the avatars. much nicer now and i only waste time downloading pictures that i want to see.
91vert 06-19-2003, 11:11 PM I'll send an e-mail to Ryan (BOOSTD 7) tomorrow to see what the deal is. I know that there was some work being done on the servers a couple of weeks ago, but have no idea on the specifics.
Sounds like we may need to scrounge up that donation thread and start coughing up some money if we want this thing to perform for us.
If we each consider how important this forum is for gaining knowledge about the cars we are buying and getting important information that we can't seem to get from the dealerships or Mazda, I would hope we would all feel inclined to fork over $10 or so (minimum) to keep it going. I would hate to see people quit visiting the forum because of the performance problems.
Keep in mind too that once we get our cars, this forum will be "the place" to find information on performance upgrades, maintenance tips, troubleshooting steps, finding parts, local RX-8 club events, etc.. I have been on the RX-7 forum for a few years now, and the help I have gotten from the members of that forum on troubleshooting problems with my car has been almost unbelievable. I have probably saved myself hundreds of dollars by not having to take my RX-7 into the dealership to be worked on. This being the case, I feel that I owe the people who keep this thing going for us.
Toadman 06-20-2003, 12:02 AM Boy are you preaching to the choir, 91vert! :D
Wolverine 06-20-2003, 03:09 AM I have dial up and I do have the same problems.
downshift 06-20-2003, 07:13 AM Same problem here too. Time to upgrade! :D
eccles 06-20-2003, 08:35 AM So would it be boorish of me to ask exactly how much has been donated so far, and what has been / will be done with the money? I donated several months back, but I haven't seen any upgrade announcements yet.
roachman 06-20-2003, 12:29 PM Same here all the way. I have problems and I donated some $$.
It would be nice to know where the $$ has gone to. Or if we are like $100 off from buying new machines or bandwidth. If we are a little off and I knew the end goal. I would most likely donate more....
Roachman
Toadman 06-20-2003, 12:36 PM I'll get ahold of Ryan and get an update. I agree this is maddening.
roachman 06-20-2003, 12:40 PM Heck,
We need to get G-man to buy us a OC-3 pipe and 5 new servers!!!
IF G-man can afford a $125K car (that would be 4 x RX-8's by the way) the 911 turbo and a $100K NSX and a $60K M3 converable.
:o) just kidding G-man....

This site is gonna have to get more bandwidth efficient. In fact I wish the forum would just eliminate avatars and signatures. They suck up bandwidth but add nothing of use to the site. On Miata.net you cannot even post pics, only links to pics.
Sooner or later this site is gonna have to find some sponsors as the RX-8 becomes popular. Look at the Miata site; three pages of sponsors.
rotorian 06-20-2003, 01:12 PM I agree with all the above comments. Funny enough, I was just going to star a new thread along the same topic when I saw this.
How about we all take our avatars out, and someone reduce / consolidate the number of pictures on the site?
Renesis08 06-20-2003, 02:07 PM Just like to know... what are the specs of this server?
RotorGeek 06-20-2003, 03:03 PM The last update was in march and i am begining to wonder myself. Here's the thread that started it all.

TreknMazda 06-20-2003, 03:18 PM Okay, as you can see to the left I am now an Avatar free zone. Who's with me? ;)

(Of course, any well-behaved browser will have all the regular avatars in its local cache by now anyway, so we're probably making a token effort, but hey, it's easy and doesn't involve PayPal ;) )
