View Full Version : 'Playgirl' Editor Fired After Outing Self As Republican
GotZoom 03-21-2005, 09:49 AM I'm not going to bash Democrats - everyone is entitled to their own opinion of course.
But, for a company in the United States (Land of the Free - everyone has the right to their own political beliefs, etc) to fire someone for being a member of one party over the other.....
Ridiculous.

jsh1120 03-21-2005, 09:58 AM Well, the Drudge Report is not exactly a sterling source, but Ms. Zipp's stated reasons for favoring the Republicans are rather, ahem, revealing...
"Those on the right are presumed to be all about power and greed -- two really sexy traits in the bedroom. They want it, they want it now, and they'll do anything to get it..."
Tigerfootball 03-21-2005, 09:58 AM wow, she could probably take that to the courts and win. that is crazy. some people are just TOO into politics and take it out of hand.

truemagellen 03-21-2005, 04:24 PM WHY DO WE CARE ABOUT PLAYGIRL
If I did I'd say that is fine I'd CUT HER OFF MY STAFF IN A HEARTBEAT...I don't hire republicans either...I'm not going to give a republican a job when they voted for someone who fucked up our economy so badly, is pissing away our money in Iraq
no no no, I'm giving a job to someone who isn't an idiot for voting for that shit
Gigolo Jason 03-21-2005, 04:28 PM You don't talk politics at work. Simple as that. This affects her job performance and her subscription base so she should get fired.
Where are all the bleeding hearts now I wonder? Where are true Liberals screaming for Equal RIGHTS? Where are the feminists? Where's the ACLU?
Fwiw, Jsh - Drudge isn't a 'source' - it's a portal which leads to sources. ;)
I'd bet anyon 10 bucks if she were fired for being outed as ANYTHING BUT, she'd have 60 minutes doing reports - the MSM would be all over the issue.
(sigh)

There it is...I wondered when the first post like this would show up.
I agree 100%! If she was fired for being gay, black, overweight, a different religion or nationality, it would be all over the press! They would be having a field day with this.
But....OMG.....fired for being a Republican.
You are right truemagellen - how dare she admit that in today's society. Geez...we're in 2005 - you would think people would have learned by now not to voice their opinions and beliefs.
Good Grief...what was she thinking.

(sigh)If, in fact, she was discharged for stating her political views, then I find it reprehensible, though clearly not outside the law.
However, considering that "Playgirl" touted the article she wrote for the upcoming issue on their own website, seeking to promote their sales, I'm somewhat skeptical that she was fired for her political views.
As for the "Drudge Report" as a source, you'll note that the only citation leading to other "sources" is in fact, the press release from Playgirl. The only reference to her being fired for her political views is in an email to Drudge, quoted by Drudge, himself. And though Ms. Zipp claimed that "criticism from the liberal left ensued" from announcement of her article, I, for one, was unable to find any such criticism, at least on the web.
You'll also notice that Ms. Zipp, herself, indicates a "strong suspicion" that she was fired for her poltical views, but does not claim explicitly that that was the reason for her firing. If, in fact, there is any substance to the story, I suspect it will be picked up by more reliable sources. Even Drudge claims only that the story is "developing."
If I had to bet, I'd put my money on this being another one of Drudge's fantasies, much like his "scoop" that John Kerry had had an affair with a staffer that, like many of his "scoops," turned out to be false.

Here's a puzzler for you. If Playgirl management objected to Ms. Zipp announcing her political affiliation, why did the magazine both run the article in which she announced her party affiliation and then put out a press release promoting the issue in which the article appeared with explicit reference to the article, itself?
If I had to bet, I'd put my money on this being another one of Drudge's fantasies, much like his "scoop" that John Kerry had had an affair with a staffer that, like many of his "scoops," turned out to be false.
There are more stories on that page than the topic of this thread -
As per this topic, give it time. It's 'developing' ;)
GotZoom 03-22-2005, 09:42 AM The Email:
"Hello Drudge,
"After your coverage of my article about coming out and voting Republican, I did receive many letters of support from fellow Republican voters, but it was not without repercussions. Criticism from the liberal left ensued. A few days after the onslaught of liberal backlash, I was released from my duties at Playgirl magazine.
"After underlings expressed their disinterest of working for an outed Republican editor, I have a strong suspicion that my position was no longer valued by Playgirl executives. I also received a phone call from a leading official from Playgirl magazine, in which he stated with a laugh, "I wouldn't have hired you if I knew you were a Republican.
"I just wanted to let you know of the fear the liberal left has about a woman with power possessing Republican views."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
She states.....".....a few days after..." Perhaps they didn't have an objection until others objected?
True..there may be other things behind this story. It is only "her take" on it. But for her to quote "a leading official" as saying she wouldn't have been hired if he knew she was a Republican, I have to assume that this is true. If she is lying, she is opening herself up to a major lawsuit and I don't think she would do that.
In a society where you have to call the Easter Bunny a Spring Bunny because you might upset non-Christians, it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest that what she is saying is true.

"Opening herself up to a major lawsuit" by quoting an anonymous "leading official?" I'd love to see what the "lawsuit" would allege.
This is what it takes for you "to assume this is true?" If I told you that I'd received a phone call from a "leading official" of Playgirl that she was fired for being a bad manager and journalist, would that change your mind? If I told you that I'd heard from an anonymous source that Matt Drudge was a left-wing plant whose job it is to make the far right look ridiculous, would that influence your view?
Editors come and go like flowers in the spring in the cutthroat world of magazine publishing these days. I know nothing about Ms. Zipp other than what has been plastered here, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see her show up as a well-paid commentator on Faux News in a few weeks.

It is as easy for me to believe there is a possibility in this being true as it is for you to believe it isn't.
Isn't America great!?!
jsh1120 03-22-2005, 10:11 AM By the way, I was always under the impression that Republicans rely first and foremost on the "free market" to determine the value of things like ideas. If Playgirl management decided that her ideas don't sell and therefore she should be fired, I'd think you guys would be applauding such a "rational economic" decision.:D
