View Full Version : Women are different from men (thankfully)
Grabitquick 03-17-2005, 01:57 AM Just a little late-night scientific development. How can I get me some of these X chromosomes? I could never seem to find any extras in the lab in college:
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=585&ncid=585&e=1&u=/nm/20050316/sc_nm/science_chromosome_dc
The research, which is reported in the science journal Nature, shows the Y is an eroded version of the X chromosome with only a few genes.
So you guys have eroded chromosomes, eh?
:)
abbid 03-17-2005, 11:20 AM LONDON (Reuters) - Scientists have cracked the genetic code of the female X chromosome which is linked to more than 300 human diseases and may help to explain why women are so different from men.
There it is! FACTUAL evidence on why i blame women for everything!
Grabitquick 03-17-2005, 11:37 AM There it is! FACTUAL evidence on why i blame women for everything!
Or why they blame us. I guess it depends on your point of view and chromosomes. X Power! :D
rotten42 03-17-2005, 11:38 AM So you guys have eroded chromosomes, eh?
:)
probably because the X chromosomes nagged the y chromosomes into submission. :)

"There are a disproportionate number of known diseases mapped to the X chromosome,"
Exactly!! :D
Toadman 03-17-2005, 11:57 AM "There are a disproportionate number of known diseases mapped to the X chromosome," Is psychosis one of them? *ducks and runs*
Aratinga 03-17-2005, 12:01 PM Is psychosis one of them? *ducks and runs*Very possibly... along with colorblindness, hemophilia, and the inherent inability to ask for directions. ;)
What you guys are failing to note is that YOU ALL HAVE X-'somes too! We ladies have two X's per cell; you guys only have one (and that degenerate Y). What makes it nice for females is that, if one of our X's has a bad gene, we can use the good gene on the other X. You guys are stuck with whatever is on the one and only X you've got. You got no backup -- your Y is pretty useless except for making you male in the first place.
So all that talk about diseases that are X-linked mean that MEN are the ones who will overwhelmingly be the victims; we ladies would have to have the same bad gene on BOTH our X's to be affected.
Just another way that women are superior to men. :D

So what are you saying? This is why all the guys love the R X 8? To make up for the missing X ?
And the women love them just to stay one X ahead?
probably because the X chromosomes nagged the y chromosomes into submission. :)
Awww, you say "submission" like it's a bad thing! :D

Very Interesting.

Just stayin' one 'X' ahead :)
abbid 03-17-2005, 01:11 PM Hi Phee :]

I'm not sure if I'm speaking to you, abbid ;)
Morgan 03-17-2005, 01:43 PM well see, this also now proves that women are more complex than men, and it isn't just ya'll thinking that we are..lol
Toadman 03-17-2005, 01:55 PM And we all know how complexity increases risk of break-down. :D
TO HAVE A CLONE OF MY OWN
(to the tune of Home on the Range)
Oh, give me a clone
Of my own flesh and bone
With its Y chromosome changed to X
And when it is grown
Then my little clone
Will be of the opposite sex
Clone, clone of my own,
With its Y chromosome changed to X
And when I'm alone
With my little clone
We will both think of nothing but sex.
^^
We have another Weird Al in the making. That was quite clever, Toadman!
Toadman 03-17-2005, 02:58 PM Attribute that to the writer Isaac Asimov.
The Y-chromosome lends itself well to a sense of humor. Speaking of which, name some truly funny X-X chromo comedians(comediennes?). Ellen? Paula Poundstone? Queen Latifa? Rita Rudner? Rosie? Whoopie? Lucille Ball? It's a short list, aint it? ;)
abbid 03-17-2005, 02:58 PM They arent even funny? :p
Grabitquick 03-17-2005, 03:10 PM The Y-chromosome lends itself well to a sense of humor.
It has to with all of these X's around to put up with! (As Moses once said, "Let my Y's go!" or words to that effect.) Y is the oppressed chromosome and can survive only with daily doses of laughter to hide the pain. :D :p ;)
Grabitquick 03-17-2005, 03:11 PM Just another way that women are superior to men. :D
Oh, stop reminding us! :D
staticlag 03-17-2005, 03:13 PM There are very few genes on either of the sex chromosomes compared to the autosomes.
Toadman 03-17-2005, 03:36 PM Get in the zome?
Grabitquick 03-17-2005, 04:21 PM Get in the zome?
How about "zome, zome" as the new Mazda marketing chant?
Reactionary 03-17-2005, 04:36 PM Is psychosis one of them? *ducks and runs*
Definitely. Psychosis or hysteria, you call it what you want. Either way, women resent it. Yet these stereotypical words/concepts came from centuries and centuries of observation. They didn't just pop out suddenly from nowhere. Men have a propensity for aggression and violence. Men don't dispute that. But in between the periods of "blowing their tops," men are quite consistent- dumb guys are dumb, smart guys are smart, nice guys are nice. Women have a propensity to "lose their mind," to become hysterical under stress to the point where their intelligence/personality and their thoughts/actions are polar opposites and may satisfy the criteria for insanity or even evil. Women should not dispute that.

And who, pray tell, defined those "insanity" criteria? Men.
And who stresses us to that point of temporary insanity? Men.
And who commits the vast majority of both random and non-random vicious acts of violence, mayhem, and murder? Men.
I find nothing to dispute. I'll take being "hysterical" (which, btw, is also synonymous with being funny) to being a psychotic killer any ol' day of the week.
Now you'd better hush up, because you're starting to s-t-r-e-s-s m-e o-u-t.....
this is all good and fine but..
i'm hungry.
Reactionary 03-17-2005, 05:03 PM BTW, men know exactly what to do when a woman is going insane. Simply have sex with them.

While I think that you may have correctly stated certain general characteristics of each gender, I'd note that the generally accepted definitions of "hysteria" and "insanity" we've become used to (and the connotations associated with each), which most of society has adopted as definitive, historically have evolved by reference to the male model as the "normal" model, meaning that so-called "female" behavior is aberrant by definition. Not surprising when one considers that, in a society that until very recently was almost exclusively a male-dominated society (and in many cultures still is), the high priests of psychiatry and similar practices have been predominately men. Of course, I'm greatly oversimplifying and this is a complex subject, but I thought that I should toss it out anyway.
But back to the fun part--I haven't heard anyone say that they wish everyone was XX, XY or YY. How dull would that be?

Your post beat me to it. I have slow fingers. ;)

Boooorrring! Vive la difference!
This got me to thinking about all those abnormal genotypes like XXY, XYY, and X0.
Here's a good website:
When sex chromosomes go bad! (http://anthro.palomar.edu/abnormal/abnormal_5.htm)
As you'd imagine, a man having two X's and one Y will be feminized; he'll have smaller than normal male parts, manboobs, a low libido, and a closet full of shoes.
Women who are triple-X or more (metafemales) are "an inch or so taller than average with unusually long legs and slender torsos, but otherwise appear normal. They have normal development of sexual characteristics and are fertile. They may have slight learning difficulties and are usually in the low range of normal intelligence (especially the XXXX and XXXXX individuals). They tend to be emotionally immature for their size during childhood." Duh -- they're supermodels! :D
And men who have two Y's (XYY), tend to be taller than average, suffer from severe acne in adolescence, and are much more likely to end up being wife-beaters or incarcerated. Go figure! ;)
Reactionary 03-17-2005, 09:16 PM One thing I've come to realize is that women love to get naked. They have this innate need to show the world what they got.
Aratinga 03-17-2005, 09:19 PM ^^^Believes everything he reads... no, check that... sees in Playboy.
Toadman 03-17-2005, 09:20 PM As you'd imagine, a man having two X's and one Y will be feminized; he'll have smaller than normal male parts, manboobs, a low libido, and a closet full of shoes./me looks suspiciously at Abbid. :D
Aratinga 03-17-2005, 09:34 PM ^^^:D:D:D:D
Sorry for setting that one up, Abbid... I didn't see it coming!
Reactionary 03-17-2005, 09:51 PM If I would have known how much young hot chicks love to get naked, I would have been a lot more aggressive in high school. I just assumed girls were prudish. Now I see that even the prudes want to get naked. This is one of my most important discoveries.
Rotarian_SC 03-17-2005, 10:36 PM Maybe the extra X explains why women are worse at math and science and stuff, like Time and the President (of Harvard) said. Also probably explains why those with Klinefelter's syndrome have lower than average intelligence. ;)
