Riding down the road people almost break their necks checking out my car, it's great! irish8 03-11-2005, 08:20 AM I wonder how many freeway accidents RX8's are responsible for? People rubbernecking and bang!! - Irish  vectorwolf 03-11-2005, 08:45 AM Haha... I do indeed. I dropped off a couple of good friends at a theater last night (Les Miserables was playing), and the folks waiting outside to help you out of the car were just gawking over it. Then, I went out to eat and ran into my little bro (he was with his H.S. Basketball team). We all left at the same time, so I ended up having a couple dozen kids drooling over the car. lol. That's why this car is so perfect for me; I'm such an attention whore. :D -=Rowdy=- 03-11-2005, 10:25 AM I'm such an attention whore. :D lol GotZoom 03-11-2005, 10:32 AM The way people stare at your car like it is some super expensive exotic! Riding down the road people almost break their necks checking out my car, it's great! My wife and I call it "doing the Exorcist"!!!!! dmp 03-11-2005, 10:41 AM I've noticed it too! I've gotten comments like: "What IS that?" "I first thought it might be the new Mustang - but not excactly...what IS that?" "Nice Bimmer!" "Are those 'suicide doors?" tasteslikechicken 03-11-2005, 10:42 AM Most of the attention I've received so far has been negative. In the form of drivers around me being overly aggressive or just general a-holes. I'm still in break-in some I'm not at all aggressive but have noticed far more people tailgaiting, cutting me off, not yielding at merges, etc., than I have ever experienced in any other car. For reference, I have a '91 Miata and my last car was a SVTFocus. SUVs and minivans seem particularly hostile. Random other data point: first tank, 17.25 mpg. Umbra 03-11-2005, 12:27 PM SUVs and minivans seem particularly hostile. They are just pissed because they are driving pos. yellowRX 03-11-2005, 02:20 PM I just took my car to get a oil change at the dealer today, even the sales men was checking out my car. With a few add on stuff the car really looks good, like fender strakes and celar corners. chrism 03-11-2005, 02:23 PM even with salt and crud all over mine from the snow/ice storm we got this week a group of females broke thier necks! StewC625 03-11-2005, 02:27 PM I park my car in valet parking at O'Hare airport in Chicago. I tip the guy a fin and he almost ALWAYS gives me the rock star spot right in front of the door. Those guys love the car. If you're ever at O'Hare, mine lives half it's life in the Terminal 3 valet "cage" rockstar spot. Look for the yellow one! tiggerlee 03-11-2005, 05:32 PM Most of the attention I've received so far has been negative. In the form of drivers around me being overly aggressive or just general a-holes. I hear ya brother! I've had the same experiences. It's called jealousy. :D Pete 03-11-2005, 05:43 PM i caused a mini to hit his car in front of him when i first got the car in july of 03 . Rx8’s were very rare then . The guy had a puzzled look on his face when he was looking at the car and didn't notice the car in front of him . I tried to warn him but he didn't understand why i kept pointing in front of him . N8theGr8 03-11-2005, 06:10 PM I passed a man and a lady...older...in a geo metro. The speed limit was 50, I was accelerating through 45 passed them up to 55. They must have been doing 35. Out of nowhere I received the finger. I just smiled, must have been jealousy:-) G-ReX 03-11-2005, 07:23 PM 99% positive attention, to the point I get self-conscious. The yellow draws 'em in. :D SE3PO 03-11-2005, 07:32 PM Most of the attention I've received so far has been negative. In the form of drivers around me being overly aggressive or just general a-holes. I noticed the same thing right after I got mine. Oh ya and at 10k miles I am getting the same MPG as you are now. rx8wannahave 03-11-2005, 07:40 PM Yes...I agree, it's cool seeing people gawk at our lovely 8!!! The best ones I like is not what you might expect (young people) I love how old timers just stare at it like if they said to themselves: "I've just seen the best looking, SUPER SEXY, car ever made...I'm ready to die now" LOL Labop 03-11-2005, 07:48 PM I looked into the rearview mirror to see a couple discussing my car. The woman pointed and I could see her mouth "what's that?" Then he started explaining the rotary, either that or he had some form of turettes (sp?) where his arm goes in circles really fast. I get lots of positive stuff about the car. A buddy of mine says, "that car gets better every time I see it" almost every time I see him. :D Vertigo-1 03-12-2005, 03:25 AM Today I turned out of a parking lot and proceeded to bring it up to 3k RPM as fast as I could, which makes quite a distinctive growl...right past two young ladies walking down the sidewalk, who immediately gawked at the car and said "holy sh*t!"...and totally kept right on turning around to stare at the car. :D Truth be told though, for every person that looks at the car, there's another 10 that just absolutely don't care a whit about it. I would say my car hasn't been attracting the share of attention I was originally expecting it to...and there's not that many 8's in my town. No cops deliberately trying to trap me, no chicks walking up to me just because of my car...not even ricers trying to race me. HottRx8Girl 03-12-2005, 03:50 AM In the summer I would get people every single day pulling up next to me at lights telling me how awesome my car was. Most of the time it was older guys giving me the thumbs up or telling me they used to have rx7s as fast as they could before the light changed. Others it was annoying little boys saying something little boys say to girls then peeling out in their clunker ricers. Once, I pulled out of a Dunkin Donuts parking lot, and a guy almost hit some pedestrians because he looked back and pointed and shouted to his wife "That's an RX7!!" crosswound 03-12-2005, 10:29 AM i got that a lot like the first 4 months i had it now nobody really looks at it unless they never seen a rx-8 to begin with. abbid 03-12-2005, 10:35 AM i got that a lot like the first 4 months i had it now nobody really looks at it unless they never seen a rx-8 to begin with. Yup. I had a guy flag me down to ask about the MPG yesterday thats about all the actions ive gotten in a month or so. SpacerX 03-12-2005, 10:37 AM The RX8 is one of the most unconventional designs on the road today -- if not THE most unconventional. To wit: rotary engine, the "freestyle" doors, the four seats, the dynamic, dramatic exterior styling... Everywhere I go, people want to look closer and longer at it. Some have been positively giddy at how well the freestyle doors work -- they stand there mesmerized -- opening and closing, opening and closing, and opening and closing... come to think of it, I think I remember doing that when I first tested out the RX8! Some thoughts adapted from my post to "How did you first find your RX8" thread: The RX8 really appeals to my sense of design, both aesthetically and functionally. It's got to be the most optimized, integrated stem-to-stern automotive design I've ever personally encountered. It's an affordable exotic for the masses (in a relative sense -- average 2005 car price is around $28K). People routinely assume it's much more expensive, especially due to the unconventional design. I think my wife, Sandi, says it best: "It's got the highest "kewl factor" of any vehicle on the road." Not surprisingly, I couldn't agree more. tiggerlee 03-12-2005, 11:19 AM well said SpacerX! abbid 03-12-2005, 12:10 PM I looked into the rearview mirror to see a couple discussing my car. I get lots of positive stuff about the car. A buddy of mine says, "that car gets better every time I see it" almost every time I see him. :D AHAHAH! this reminds me of that one time i looked in my rearview and i saw a guy making the motion of 'Milking a cow' with both of his hands, he then stop that, and takes his finger, and starts making fast little circles. I guess he was explaining the piston VS rotary design, it was sweet. BlueEyes 03-12-2005, 12:39 PM I get worried hear folks. I often break my neck to check out all sorts of car, kia's to ferrari's. I wonder if they are thinking I am jealous. RotaryNoob 03-12-2005, 01:21 PM A couple weeks ago I was on my way home from work and was getting on the freeway. The onramp turns into an exit only lane so I have to get over right away. There was a mid 90's civic coming up fast so I waited to get over and he slows right next to me and starts honking the horn. I look over to see an older gentlemen in his 50's or so yelling out his window "what is that?" as we're doing 65 on the freeway. I yelled back "RX EIGHT!", punched it and was on my way. I don't get too much attention around stuck up So Cal but every now and then I do. Another time I was parked at the local shopping center going to Gamestop and on my way out to the car a guy and kid were drooling over the car. Guy's peeking in the windows and what not. He then proceeds to hop into his 500SL Mercedes. Made me feel good. No More Oldsmobiles 03-12-2005, 03:50 PM On one of my many recent trips to the auto store for detailing supplies, a young man said "You have a nice car." I thanked him and felt great. The next time I went to that store, there was a Rolls parked in the lot. No one told me I had a nice car. GRT8 03-12-2005, 05:46 PM One of the men at my church said that whenever I got tired of the RX8 he'd be around to pick it up. He laughed and we talked a bit about the car, he thought it cost $40k-$50k...LOL! I couldn't believe that most people don't even know what make or model this car. Almost feels like Mazda's best kept secret. little666devil 03-12-2005, 06:55 PM I tend to get the look of hatred from other fellow rx8'ers. It seems whenever I pass an 8 on the street it is an older man, and seeing as I am 18, they almost seem to hate me  oh well, I got an rx8 too :p I also get the common stare-to-neck-breakage almost everyday, the first night i got the car, I was driving around with my girlfriend, Amanda, and get stopped at a light by a guy in his early 20's. "Yo man, Is that YOUR CAR?!?!" Ha, made me feel awesome! :D Even better, it isn't my mommys or daddys car! Teenagers always come up to me, giving me the look like, "that guy thinks he is cool but that is just mommys car." If only they knew... VBprogrammer666 03-12-2005, 07:39 PM I tend to get the look of hatred from other fellow rx8'ers. It seems whenever I pass an 8 on the street it is an older man, and seeing as I am 18, they almost seem to hate me  oh well, I got an rx8 too :p You won't get that from me. I'm 47 and I love seeing all sorts of people driving the 8. I think it's especially cool that I see women driving the 8. I think that says a lot about how smart they are and how they are not swayed by the typical expectations that the 'marketing world' has towards women drivers. As far as young people driving the 8, more power to you - just please take the time to learn how to drive it well. I bought my 1980 RX-7 when I was 21 and loved it when we popped our lights up and down as a hello to other passing RX-7 drivers. Speaking of looks, I was driving in downtown Toms River, NJ today and a bunch of skateboard kids were doing their thing as I passed by. I was watching them because it looked like fun and then I noticed that they had all stopped skating and were gaping at my car as it passed by. Mutual respect. BlueFrenzy 03-12-2005, 07:52 PM We had an RX8 meet today here in Calgary. It was great to have a bunch of 8's lined up. People in the parking lot were just awestruck at the sight. It was great! You could see people walking and cranking their heads ... doing the look back and all. rocketrider2 03-12-2005, 07:57 PM For the most part out on the road its not getting as much attention as before. But last week I pulled into the Porsche dealer where I bought my current 911 Turbo, I pulled past a husband, wife and two sons, around 12 and 14, the kids started yelling at the Dad.."Dad, dad get that car, its the coolest one here" pointing at my car...lol. I walked in and was talking to my salesman about another 993 Turbo they got in and a mob started forming around my car. I looked at him and told him, even trade for the 993 Turbo...lol. :D |
