View Full Version : What are strakes? utente 03-10-2005, 10:05 PM I have no idea, but keep seeing them mentioned. poolsidenaz 03-10-2005, 10:11 PM See my avatar :D It's those 2 pieces that run horizontal over the black (fake) vent piece that's tucked behind your front wheel. socalightning 03-10-2005, 10:11 PM They are the aluminum fins in the front fender vents that Mazda sells as an accessory - 2 per side (fender). socalightning 03-10-2005, 10:12 PM ^Damn! You beat me! LiveBlues 03-10-2005, 10:15 PM They look great. Too bad they are so friggin expensive. It's just 4 little pieces of aluminum for crissakes. poolsidenaz 03-10-2005, 10:22 PM Mine were $109 including $20 additional charge for a custom color (not aluminum and not chrome), shipped to my door with 100% perfectly clear install instrx. It's a 15 minute job if you're slow. One of the best buys out there for less than $100  They look great. Too bad they are so friggin expensive. It's just 4 little pieces of aluminum for crissakes. G8rboy 03-10-2005, 11:23 PM They're well worth it at any price... they give the fender area much needed character. On the black RX-8's, I feel they're almost necessary or you don't even see the definition in the fender vents. irish8 03-10-2005, 11:27 PM Check it out... http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=43363&stc=1 - Irish  Rotario 03-12-2005, 12:08 PM One of the best buys out there for less than $100  You paid $109 for yours, right? I'm gonna take a wild guess here that $109 is more than $100, or are my math skills that rusty? Color me confused... Columbus 03-12-2005, 12:47 PM I think in the mazda accessory catalog they were $250 so a mere $109 doesn't sound so bad. There were some on eBay a couple of weeks ago so that might be worth a try. abbid 03-12-2005, 12:53 PM They are very neat looking, i have seen poolsides in person and boy are they sexy. Moved ;] MELRX8 03-12-2005, 01:20 PM Here's another example! :) salituro64 03-12-2005, 03:39 PM See my avatar :D It's those 2 pieces that run horizontal over the black (fake) vent piece that's tucked behind your front wheel. I'm gonna take a wild guess here that $109 is more than $100, or are my math skills that rusty? Color me confused... She said 109 was with an added cost for a custom color, that would be 89 for standard(probably aluminum or chrome) Rotario 03-23-2005, 01:03 PM OH MY GOD - who did that strake install??????? My thoughts exactly! Kb7709 03-23-2005, 11:46 PM I second that question. Where can you find the strakes for under $100?? airboss 04-08-2005, 05:16 PM Strakes are aerodynamic "fences" that guide airflow. You will see them on GE powered engines on the fwd side of the engine cowling and on some executive jets. EyeBall Fixer...(o)(x) 04-10-2005, 07:28 PM Doesn't Dennis sell strakes? DLS CUSTOM (http://www.rx8club.com/forumdisplay.php?f=89) kraeji 04-10-2005, 10:28 PM on smaller airplanes strakes are located in fron of the horizontal stabilizer and they increase the surface area of the hoirzontal stabilizer in order to keep the nose pitched down and prevent a flat spin in case of a stall. Hotsauce 04-13-2005, 07:20 PM Keep an eye out on Ebay. I won mine in an auction for $83 plus $9 shipping. They didn't come with hardware, but I was able to find what I needed at the hardware store for about 10 cents. They were in great shape and installed easily. I really like how they look. countzero 04-19-2005, 11:43 AM lots of us in the Uk have had a problem with corrosion on the strakes, damn salt they put on the road in winter - if didnt get them from mazda already i'd go for some stainless steel ones - look on ebay http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Road-Race-Accessories_W0QQssPageNameZl2QQtZkm peralwhite8 04-20-2005, 02:57 PM lots of us in the Uk have had a problem with corrosion on the strakes, damn salt they put on the road in winter - if didnt get them from mazda already i'd go for some stainless steel ones - look on ebay http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Road-Race-Accessories_W0QQssPageNameZl2QQtZkm Where can i order the stainless ones in the US?? Buffalo66 04-28-2005, 12:09 AM I guess black ain't the only color that looks bad when it gets dirty. california style 04-28-2005, 05:11 AM strakes is a word that if u say it a lot, it begins to sound stupid..... like someone just made it up (like flange) zoom44 04-28-2005, 12:00 PM strakes is a word that if u say it a lot, it begins to sound stupid..... like someone just made it up (like flange) at some point every word was "just made up" by someone. j67345 05-05-2005, 12:39 AM I got the ones on eBay.....GREAT GREAT quality! They are polished stainless steel, and they are beautiful! I was a little nervous since they were stainless.....and I never thought of stainless as being shiny, but they look exactly like they are chrome. I agree.....these are an absolute NECESSITY for the RX-8. Wow, I knew they would look cool.....but they look AMAZING! Go get some!!! for sure!!! :o) chrism 05-05-2005, 05:24 AM These are strakes read the instructions before installation... http://rx8ownersclub.co.uk/forum/files/img_3183.jpg just put mine on last weekend....love them!..and somebody didnt follow the template :D Gambit 05-05-2005, 08:08 AM I didn't get a template...but it's not real hard to tell if they're level or not :) salituro64 05-06-2005, 06:43 AM Personally I like the aluminum OEM, becasue I like the softer look without the shine. Stainless will probably hold up better because it does not oxidize like aluminum. This is more of an issue with areas w/snow and road salt. Does anyone know if someone makes them in brushed stainless? G8rboy 05-06-2005, 07:08 AM Personally I like the aluminum OEM, becasue I like the softer look without the shine. Stainless will probably hold up better because it does not oxidize like aluminum. This is more of an issue with areas w/snow and road salt. Does anyone know if someone makes them in brushed stainless? Besides a couple of complaints from the UK strake owners, I've not heard of any oxidation issues with them. My strakes have been through 2 winters with heavy salt use on the roads (it's my daily driver), and there's no sign of pitting, tarnish or discoloration... they still look great with a wipedown after a wash. I agree, I like the softer, brushed look over shiny stainless. |
