I usually manage about 7-8 if I remember to turn my blinds the right way before bed. Otherwise it's about 5 or so.

4 hours is plenty, but I like a two hour nap before staying up all night. I can get by with two hours asleep for every 12 hours awake, for a few days anyway. I usually split my sleep up into two sessions a day.

Us night shift folks don't live as long, unfortunately. :(

how hard would it be to switch your shift?I'm a night owl anyway, so I choose to work nights. I don't have to fight traffic, I get to wind down (or maybe sleep) towards the end of a shift instead of getting busier and busier like the day shifts. It's also good for job security to do shifts that your colleagues would rather not do....making oneself relatively indispensible is important in any job, imo.

You get used to it. Sleep when you're tired, eat when you're hungry.

Doesn't that affect your marital life? Are the nurses taking good care of you?

I've never touched a nurse. And I only work 3-4 nights a week.

The question is, have they touched YOU?

The question is, have they touched YOU?In Texas, we don't use the Clinton definitions of cheat'n. The means the, and a BJ will get you divorced (or worse) .

No.

To bed at 11PM, outta bed at 5:30AM -- so 6.5 hours on weeknights. Extra on weekends, but the critters that live with me seem to think that I should be feeding them by 7AM every morning; they have no concept of "weekend". The fuzzy and furry alarm clocks do a good job.

Usually 3 to 5 hours a night although I have been surviving on about 2.5 a night lately. Just can't sleep! All the night owls need to hang out more when it gets late because I stay bored! :p

I'm usually in bed by 10pm or 11pm, and up at 5am weekdays. On weekends it really depends on what I have to do the next day. Most of the time I'm in bed by 12am or 1am and up by 7am.

Before I had my CPAP machine I usually went to bed around 1am and woke up at 4am or 5am eveyday.

For me...

Weekdays: 10:30-11PM till 5:30-6AM so about 7 hours
Weekends: All over the place but normally 12-7:30-8:30AM 7.5-8.5

Speed-ER Doc thanks for the long hours and for helping people...but 3-4 days of work per week aint to shabby so I will not cry for you too much...and then there's that paycheck...LOL...I'm just messing around, but I do thank you for a nobel career!

I average 6, but often invade that margin. I'm trying to become more conscientious about it because I know I do best on 7 or 8 hours. Lol, when I was in my 20's I needed about 10 hours to feel my best.

When I'm on-call, sometimes none. There have been weeks when I've averaged less than 2 hours per day (and not consecutive) :( Fortunately, things have been more stable the last couple of years. It's fairly effective motivation -- make sure the stuff gets fixed right if you don't want to be staying up all night :p The joys of supporting 7x24 systems.

how long do you sleep on the average each night
If I take a ruler with me to bed, usually 12 inches.

If I take a yardstick with me to bed, than more like 36 inches!
;)

Careful what you ask for! :D

(careful what you ask for) ^^ yeah, 36 inches is a bit much!

About 5 hours from 5am on or so and usually another 2 hours around 5pm if I can.
I only eat once or twice a day, also.
