View Full Version : 2006 Honda Civic SI Coupe !!! RX-8 In Trouble ?!!
rX8rEdLiNe 03-07-2005, 01:33 AM Guys, check out the 90-95% accurate production concept 2006 Honda Civic SI coupe coming out this summer! The previous SI hatchback version could do 0-60 in 7.5 seconds. This new 200hp version that utilizes the RSX-type S engine would make this a new pocket rocket at under 20 grand, and could potentially do 0-60 in under 6.5 seconds. This would definitely give the RX-8 a good run at an amazing value.

Napboy 03-07-2005, 01:37 AM these two cars are not even in the same realm. way different target markets. this should more likely be posted in the rsx or neon forums.
on a side note, i like this one. it looks like a scion tc/g35 hybrid.
Rhawb 03-07-2005, 01:37 AM Eh, sure it's looking like it's going to be a deal, but it's not going to make me envious. They're still driving an FWD car. I'll take a slower and nicer RWD car over that any day.
XDEEDUBBX 03-07-2005, 01:44 AM I will definately have my girlfriend trade in her civic..hehe
abbid 03-07-2005, 01:52 AM Thats a nice car. If i ever sell my RX8, im sure this is what ill have in my planbook.
Mugatu 03-07-2005, 07:25 AM welcome to a month ago.
crossbow 03-07-2005, 07:38 AM More power doesn't mean faster. Its still a step backward from the old 90's civics. Stupid honda, why did you give up the wishbones...WHY!!!!!
cas2themoe 03-07-2005, 09:28 AM Still a ricer!!! And I feel the final product is going to look a little different than that.
Shocka 03-07-2005, 09:43 AM Still a ricer!!! And I feel the final product is going to look a little different than that.
yeah it might actually have door handles
DARKMAZ8 03-07-2005, 09:55 AM More power doesn't mean faster. Its still a step backward from the old 90's civics. Stupid honda, why did you give up the wishbones...WHY!!!!!
yeah stupid honda...spent 10 years advertizing the wishbone only to change their suspension to cheap mac strut setup......on top of that the ivtec took what was a very exciting engine and made it bland......older vtec's were a lot more intense at higher rpm....again stupid honda
DreRX8 03-07-2005, 09:56 AM well--we don't know the weight of this car yet--so its a little too early to start ballclutchin the Si.
DARKMAZ8 03-07-2005, 09:57 AM And I hope they paint that hood....lol
guy321 03-07-2005, 10:17 AM DANG! I'm going to sell my car NOW so i can save for this beauty of a civic!
greene76 03-07-2005, 10:23 AM It looks sharp, but when has a concept/preproduction ever looked like the actual car on the lot? Anyway, everyone seems so focused on straightline performance, everytime I drive my rotory I am amazed at how fun it is to wind it up, I hope to never have to drive a conventional piston engine again.
larazaunida 03-07-2005, 10:36 AM actually it doesnt look horrible...but why would you want to drive one? FWD, come on now. Besides its Honda. Like mentioned before, two different groups the two items go for.
That pre-production model looks nice... They should make that the next RSX; a baby TL. The current si is a dud with the tc eating away at them. I hope the MS 3 has some big balls.
army_rx8 03-07-2005, 10:56 AM ^^hehe big brass ones at that:D
Feras 03-07-2005, 12:14 PM ooh i should be shaking in my boots that the car i drive becomes obsolete because honda came out with a new car. Who honestly would think their car would suck because a new one has a potential to do something better...just enjoy your car and stop worrying about other people and other cars. So you got dusted at a light, BFD,let me guess now you're gonna be depressed for months, seriously get over it...sorry i just hate hearing people complain about how since theres a better car out there they wasted their money or they feel obsolete. if you're happy with your carr why the hell do you have to worry aout other peoples cars. Same thing goes for significant others, if you love your girlfriend you're not going to think of her as obsolete as soon as some new hottie walks into the room.

^^^ True Dat!!
canaryrx8 03-07-2005, 01:06 PM ugly car, if your budget is under 20 grand and you want performance, even if it is a neon or whatever, the srt-4 is what you want. That or grab something used like a 'stang etc... I also totally agree with MazdaspeedFeras, who cares anyhow, just enjoy your 8 and to each his own or whatever.
Shoafb 03-07-2005, 02:31 PM err... not even the same market. The rx-8 is a little more upscale, much nicer looking and refined. That looks to be geared directly to the import, younger crowd.
Rxdriftingaction 03-07-2005, 04:50 PM look nice.!! but like a tc to me.!! as well!!!!!! does anyone has the pic of inside?! 6.5sec.. haha..!!! srt-4 do much better then she does..!!! and it's also around that 20grands.!!! so.. actually the best value around this pirce is not civic ..it's srt-4 I think!!!!
SharkDiver 03-07-2005, 04:50 PM What picture are you guys looking at?That car is ugly,It looks like it should be in the movie I-Robot or something. If someone bought that over a RX 8 then its time for a some medication because you just went insane... ;)

Reactionary 03-07-2005, 05:02 PM You guys are missing the point. The point is that normally aspirated HP is going up, both from larger (6 and 8 cylinders) and smaller displacement (4 cylinders) engines. This is either good or bad news for Mazda and the rotary. With rising gas prices that will only continue into the future, the good news is that the rotary may finally be paired with an electric motor (hydrogen is not an option for the near future) and the bad news is that Mazda may elect to put an end to it.
guy321 03-07-2005, 05:07 PM I got mine, who cares about anyone else?

The rotary engine is/was not ment to be compared to a piston engine......It is made for ppl that respect its originality.....
rotary-convert 03-07-2005, 05:38 PM Still and always will be a honda. Can't wait to see these ones with oversize wings and coffee can tailpipes. Will it run on Uncle Ben's or Minute rice?

Thanks for the face. The fact is I should be doing that face to you. I think you really do get the point but you're pretending you don't get the point.
The rotary exists because it was designed and marketed in comparison to the piston engine. Thanks.

Funny thing is...
NA horsepower on 'low displacement' rotary engines have gone up too (quite a bit)
Take a look at previous NA 2-rotors.
Hydrogen would be sweet, I've read that they (Mazda) have a couple working prototypes that have been "loaned" out for long term testing. But infrastructure to support it is a ways off.
gas-electric hybrids are a waste in my opinion. A regular old Honda Civic HX gets pretty darn good gas mileage with low emissions and doesn't cost a ridiculous amount of money. A freakin' hybrid will take you 6 or 7 years use just to make up for the extra money spent.

So you're saying that the present situation of a rotary that is somewhat underpowered (despite the fact it is the most powerful NA rotary ever on the market) compared to all kinds of other cars in its class and related classes yet gets horrendous gas mileage isn't harmful to the survivability of the rotary even during a continuining gas price increase?
A Civic HX gets amazing NA gas mileage. What does that have to do with the rotary? If Mazda has the technology to increase the rotary mileage to 26 and then to 28 MPG hwy in the current engine with the current HP in the next few years and can increase NA HP to around 280 in the next several years while getting 26 MPG hwy, then great. But it doesn't seem they can, and they need to be able to do it now. Gas-electric hybrid is the only alternative. This is why all rotary enthusiasts should be thankful for the Honda Accord hybrid and Lexus RX hybrid and the precedent they're setting for increased mileage AND performance/HP. Without their precedent, the rotary would be as good as gone by 2007.
QBallz 03-07-2005, 06:09 PM Looks like another boring econo box to me...
If I wanted fast and boring I would have gotten an SRT or WRX...
But instead I got a sleek and sexy RX8.
Kel Rx8 03-07-2005, 06:12 PM problem with that car is like my crx that everyone and there mother will try to steal it
and now that they use the ivtec motor in earlier 5g(94-96) civic's it can only be worst
I must say i worry about my crx all the time
i mean it looks like shit i made the car look as stock as possible but word gets around
and people know.

The problem is that in this world, people want both power and fuel economy. This forces the hybrid to not be as fuel efficient. They are capable of very high mpg like the earlier models, but no one will buy a 60hp hybrid, so I agree, at this point it is a waste. The old Civic HX, is just so slow in today's generation of cars, but it did get damn good gas mileage. It reminds me of my first car, an 86 VW golf Diesel. It got 50mpg, but man, that thing took forever just to hit 60mph, and if I tried driving that thing in today's world, it would not be very pleasant. It's gonna take time, but the hybrid will eventually be cheaper, and actually save people money, along with plenty of power to get you around in today's mad rush of speedy traffic. Just my.02.
therm8 03-07-2005, 10:16 PM So you're saying that the present situation of a rotary that is somewhat underpowered (despite the fact it is the most powerful NA rotary ever on the market) compared to all kinds of other cars in its class and related classes yet gets horrendous gas mileage isn't harmful to the survivability of the rotary even during a continuining gas price increase?

Geez you're confrontational. You brought up hybrids, I said they were a waste, and gave the HX as a better alternative. Not once in my post did I mention the survivability of the rotary engine. I just provided counter-argument to your I4 engines are making leaps and bounds in the horsepower department, while the rotary doesn't change. The rotary will never have the gas mileage of an I4 of similar power output, as it is only about 70% as efficient.
An Accord hybrid stickers for about $3400 more than the gasoline version. However if it is anything like the current selection of hybrids you can add about $4-5000 to that. Still not worth it in my opinion. The research money would be better spent on alternative-fuel engine development.
Even 220 hp (i don't buy 238) in a 3000lb car doesn't make it completely underpowered. I guess the Lotus Elise is underpowered as well  . The 8 shines where it belongs, on the track. And it's damn fun on the road. All while being very good looking, very comfortable, easy to drive at the limit, and practical. Something that can't be said for all of it's more powerful "competitors." And just to keep this post on topic :D a better looking, more powerful Civic Si, means nothing to me. I wouldn't want a 2 door, fwd car with excessive insurance premiums due to the demographic that will purchase it (or have it purchased for them... :p )
Reactionary 03-07-2005, 11:21 PM No, I'm not confrontational. Other people are confrontational. I make solid points and I expect them not to be misinterpreted. I never said or suggested the rotary doesn't change. I said larger piston engines are getting HP farther and farther away from the rotary and smaller piston engines used in cheaper cars are getting closer and closer to the rotary in HP. I also never said it is completely underpowered; I said it is somewhat underpowered compared to cars in its class and in other related classes. My point was that for the HP it produces, the mileage is not acceptable for most consumers. And this matters. And I'll bet if HP or mileage or both don't go up, the rotary and the RX8 will be done by 2007.
The new Lexus GS300 has a 3 liter V6 that makes 245 HP and gets 30 MPG hwy. The new Lexus GS400 has a 4.3 liter V8 that makes 300 HP and gets 25 MPG hwy.
boss_clad 03-07-2005, 11:41 PM are they releasing it over here? i thought it was only japan.
yushinrt 03-07-2005, 11:44 PM i think that car is ugly fullstop i mean the performan price sounds great but the look let down every thing down

Well I apologize for misinterpretting you (since I hate that as well). 300 hp and 25 hwy is nothing all too impressive, heck my old camaro would do that when it was just over 330hp (5.7L) and that car was 5 years old at the time. My 2.3L I5 turbo Volvo got 29 hwy at around 290-300 hp (240ish stock).
I do however understand your point about the rotary's fuel consumption. In today's world of exhorbitant demand and rising gasoline prices, 15-22 mpg isn't going to cut it. I truly don't see much future for the rotary, based on that alone.
I'm done here, and I apologize for offtopic hijacking or co-hijacking :p
