View Full Version : whats with the ne numbers
P00Man 06-11-2003, 08:55 PM car and driver and road and track both got a 5.9 0-60
now other mags are getting 6.4's, whats the deal with this?
also, c&t and r&d both said that it had great handling, now other mags are saying that it is mushy and has a lot of body roll.
how is this happening and more importantly, WHY the drop in overall performance?

The only mag that got 6.4 was Motor Trend and we know why that is.. (they suck :p)
The body roll has always been an issue though some magazines don't mind it as much. Mazda had it engineered in to give off a more supple ride and some reviewers commented, some did not. Either way, by every magazine's review and every video review... the RX-8 is a blast to drive.
If you are focused on the numbers, don't be. As said many times before... you don't drive a spec sheet. Get in the car, drive it. If you like it, then you buy it. If you don't then you get something else.
It's the story of life.

It's the story of life. AAAMEN!

dreamgetter1 06-12-2003, 09:36 AM it also lost 3HP?
yea, i don't get the HP thing...if you look at ALL of the advertisements, they all state 250hp in big BOLD numbers...look at this month's Stuff magazine, front cover...it has an advertisement and it clearly states "250hp"...
anyways, does anyone know if Mazda is one of those companies that advertise great performance figures, but fail to deliver?
RobDickinson 06-12-2003, 10:04 AM Dunno where your 250hp comes from but most stuff I've seen has been in ps, and 250ps is 247 hp.
Think of us poor brits with only 228bhp...
zoom44 06-12-2003, 11:19 AM 228? it was 231 last week! is it leaking?
I don't know about the 0-60 time as I haven't been inclined to try it but I disagree with the body roll claims. Maybe there is roll when you try to corner at 120mph on a track, but on a road under 80mph it all feels good to me. I'm suprised none of the reviews pick up on the "directness". I find the steering, brakes & accelerator to be more like a normal car than a sports car in terms of travel. You have to turn the wheel a lot, stand on the brakes and boot the accelerator. I've been used to treating all with gentle precision and utter respect with the S....but now I've got DSC!
cueball 06-12-2003, 07:36 PM Some of the car mag might have been a little old. When there were only a very few cars built just to show reporters what it was like. Some of those cars were considered to have mushy suspension, but it was still be tweaked by Mazda.

Yikes! that doesn't sound too good, specially the steering and braking. Can you elaborate? For example, when turning a corner, how much do you have to crank the wheel?
To brake, how far does pedal have to travel before it starts to slow you down significantly? I know it's like asking how far is far but you know what I mean.
