I'm working on a comic strip in what little spare time I have. Wanted a few opinions. Yeah, it's not much in the way of humor right now. Working on that too... ;) Seriously though, it's a quick and dirty cartoon, not much to it yet.

Anyway, my wife can't be trusted to hurt my ego. Rarely do I get any constructive criticism on my graphics stuff (everything else, just not graphics). What do you all think? BTW, I have my Nomex underware on so flame away.

Also, my wife isn't geeky enough to understand "pwn3d".

I'm actually cringing as I reach for the post button...

I think the drawings are pretty good and I really liked the fade out of the forground because you were focused on the rice kid in the background, but...I did not get the humor...

rx8wannahave..., yeah, it's a geek theme...

"pwn3d" is geek/hax0r for "owned". meaning beaten/humiliated/whatever. It's kind of pronounced pizzoned..., at least that's how I pronounce it. Really, it's childish humor at best, but that's the only type I'm good at.

Thanks for the comments so far :D

if you want me to be brutally honest...
the art's ok. nothing great, but not too bad.
the humor/writing... i dunno. i didn't crack a smile. pwn3d i figured sounded like "owned" but with a "p"... not "pizzone" so I don't get the punchline.

if you're talking about making it professionally... you've got A LOT to work on. if you're talking about something just for fun, it's plenty fine, though I don't think it's good enough to gather a huge following ala Penny-Arcade.

as a little advice use a more "professional" looking comic font. use one of these free ones you can get at blambot (http://blambot.com/) over comic sans or whatever font you're using now. I think that'll make a big difference in the look. here's the link to the fonts section (http://blambot.com/menu.shtml). it's probably just me, but i can't stand the look of comic sans. here i did a quick redo of the font if you're curious what it'd look like (http://img190.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img190&image=newfont9nw.jpg).

yeah, I'm just playing with stuff. not looking at making any money or getting popular. but it's enough for me. I like that font. I went through a few I had didn't like any, so I used that one.

thanks spork.

Fo shizzle.

It was better the second time I read it. There are some nice details only forum geeks would get (the rotor t shirt, the stickers on the car, the language, the fact the true car enthusiast didn't understand the pwned).

Keep it up. I liked sporks font better. :)

Thanks ER, you actually got the point of the strip in one. And there wasn't much "writing" involved, this pretty much happened to us at the car club a couple weeks back. names/dialogue has been changed to protect the innocent..., or something. If anyone wants to help out and provide actual writing/humor, it would be appreciated ;)

I think if I do this (even as just the occasional hobby thing), I may go back to doing the art the way I did it my first two strips/experiments. For this one I just quickly used the pen tool over the center of the scanned lines. In the previous one I actually inked it before scanning, then used the pen tools around each SIDE of the ink. I just reread the above, and didn't understand what I wrote, try the picture below. The above strip was quicker, but I like the inked look below.

Below you can see thicker lines with changing width/depth compared to all narrow lines above.

Pizzoned? That's new.

I've always thought that since "pwned" = "owned" that it would be pronounced "p-owned."

Wiki backs me up. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pwn)

I actually use to do a crude comic stip that I use to draw by hand (I'm not an artist) back in Middle School and my friends always wanted a new stip. You are bringing back memories of that with your strip. Maybe you could make a rx8club comic strip we all could read daily...lol, maybe more work than you want.

Heck...with the permission of the user, you could use our real names (rx8wannahave, Tayninh, Charles Hill, Rotary GOD, Abbid, etc etc etc)...I think that would be REALLY funny...lol, you just need a topic...heck...this website is FILLED with them...

Luftwaffle: yeah, it's just how I pronounce it, never loked the sound of powned ;)

rx8wannahave: yeah, maybe I could just pick a random lounge topic to carry the conversation. LOL :D

Yup, I think that would be funny...

You can use the avatars as the characters head...lol
