Well, I finally got an email from Mazda telling me that a VIN has been assigned to my car. Earlier this week, rx8orders had said I wasn't in the pre-order system and when I questioned them about that they said they found my name after "further research"... duh!

Here's the text from the email:

Hello Again jason,

We've just received confirmation from our factory that your 2004 Mazda RX-8 has been assigned a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and is about to be produced to your specifications.

Your VIN is: JM1FE173040100509

It won't be long before the factory completes your car and it's on the way to your Mazda dealer so you can experience the thrill of the all-new, high-revving RENESIS twin-rotary engine! We'll let you know as soon as that happens, but we expect this to occur within 30 days.

In the meantime, did you know Mazda built a specially-equipped RX-8 for the X-Men movie sequel, X2? Click here to see the Mazda RX-8 X-Men car.

Zoom-Zoom,
Mazda RX-8 Order Headquarters

Hey Jason,

Wanna arm wrestle for that car. I just got my email from Mazda, IDENTICAL to yours, including the VIN. If that's a yellow sport, it's mine!
:)

It looks like Mazda may be just a little screwed up. The VIN number listed does NOT match the one I got from my dealer a couple of weeks ago.

This is (as I type this) the third thread on this email. And we are ALL getting the same VIN#. Probably all getting the email twice, too:o

One of the forum members that works at a dealer ran the VIN # and it is red with black cloth interior, Touring Package. Also listed as a wholesale demo.

I didn't get the early emails from the factory. This is the first one (and the duplicate) I have received that refers to my order. And only 14 days after the dealer called me with the "real" VIN#
:p

Looks like we all got the same messages (yes with the same VIN), in fact we probably got them twice!

But then about 2 hours later I got another e-mail marked CORRECTION and it listed a significantly different VIN. So hopefully all is well and it was just a glitch.:p

So now, does anyone know how long it takes from VIN to car in my hands?

The Infiniti G35C forum says 2 weeks from VIN to dealership (for West coast deliveries), is it safe to assume that Mazda delivery takes about the same amount of time?

from my understanding it takes 7-10 days from japan to the states, then 7-10 days for customs and port work. then just deliver in a few days. not positive they may hold them longer, who knows. also i noticed just because you have a vin doesnt mean your car is in transit. it depends on the build date. anything built on or before 5/28 is "in transit"
