View Full Version : If not the RX-8 then what?

Y&Y

I was wondering what other cars everyone would get or considering of getting if the RX-8 is not in the right price range or it did not fulfill the right expectations.

As for me I would love to have the RX-8. But with my budget I would have to settle for a WRX.

(if there was a thread like this already, well I couldn't find it in the search:p :p :p )

If for some reason I could get the RX I too would go get the WRX. or the Mazda 6 loaded

If we weren't wanting an RX-8, I'd be looking for a 97-99 4 door BMW M3. I don't know if I could sell my wife on the idea, though - and the back seat would be tighter than the RX-8!

Yeah I 've been comtemplating an 01 Type R ( Really hard to find one in good condition), a 03 White Enthusiast Package Z (Also very hard to find), or 03' Cl-S 6-spd( Final year to get one). I'm in the 20 to 29 K Price range would get a G35 6spd coupe if I had more cash.

There was a thread relating to this back in March. Click here (http://www.rx8forum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2953)

But to answer your question now, it would have to be the Infiniti G35 6-MT coupe in Desert Platinum.

That was the car I had picked out, ready to order, before I decided on the RX-8.

My 2nd Choice - BMW 330ci in Steel Blue.

RX8 then
either Mazda 6 loaded or Acura TSX.

1) G35 Coupe 6 speed
2) RX-8 GT

I thought about the CL-S 6 speed, but I need something more "taunt". Even with the mods I have in my current CL it feels like a luxury car.

Interesting a lot of you guys so chose G35 as one of the alternate car to buy. I would have to assume most of you guys are a family man or of that age. So praticality must always be in your minds. As for me I only know about cars that I would certaintly be interested in. But I shall look more into the G35.;)

I would not get the RX8 if it were a money issue so that is why I chose the WRX (24k) or mazda 6 (25k).

If not the RX-8, then the 2003 Dodge Ram.

Volvo S60R (like the RX-8 it is something a little different) or a Hummer H2 (the huge tax break is really enticing - can write the whole thing off in year 1 -- plus my kids go nuts every time they see one)

I've driven both the 6 suspension is very stiff but handles pretty good. The TSX is definitely a great buy, the 6 spd was so smooth I couldn't tell the difference from my V6 Accord coupe. But I'd get the TSX over the 6 tho. JMO.

I'm keeping my '85 911 turbo for next twenty years (using it as a daily car here before repatriating but it is like new with 23 K kms
on it) and I've stepped back from the brink of an RX-8 order
to consider other car for criss-crossing continent & 2-3 week 'roadies'.

Lefuton's choice to look at next Prius, from a technical perspective,
is also interesting to me. You get 2 second improvement on accel.
times (0-62), faster overtaking than an RX-8, 66% savings on gasoline purchases (a 15% improvement), a much more distinctive (.26Cd) mono-form quiet ride at speed and I'll feel good about the 30% emmissions improvement over the current superclean Prius. Hatchbacks with 60/40 fold-down seats
and completely flat entryway to the front buckets are perfect for traveling for two.

Check the new one out on Toyota.com

Due to the steep driveway of my new home and the servere winter we just had, my next daily driver needs to have awd. My FWD got stuck at the bottom a couple of times until I parked it along the front of the house. Then it would get buried by the snow plows.

1) WRX and WRX STi (I give them a tie since I think the difference in parts/performance justisfies the difference in price).

2) Evo (ranks higher than EX-8 due to AWD factor)

3) RX-8 (Though, I'm really waiting for the MazdaSpeed RX-8 or a 4th gen RX-7)

4)Loaded Mazda6 s w/manual tranny (If I were in the market for a FWD sedan, which I'm not)

Well I'm probably going to go with the Volvo XC90 instead of the RX-8 now for the tax right off reasons Rx-husker mentioned. SUV loophole will be closed soon so I've decided to take advantage.

So in the future instead of the Rx-8 hopefully I will be able consider the new Rx-7 (looking at 2005 to buy now).

Lotus Elise. So, it's not quite as practical as the RX-8, but how often do I need to take more than one person in my car? Once a year? That would leave the Miata as my girlfriend's car, and she likes riding in it more than driving it. She's liking the Miata more and more, so if I can really get her interested in it as a daily driver the Lotus is mine. :D

I'd look at either a Miata (less cost) or a Jag XK8 Drop Top (used).

if AWD is a must, why are you considering the 8? or other non awd cars at all?

subaru makes the cheapest most reliable awd out there
there's the forrester, legacy, impreza
all awd and cheap

maybe you should define what you want and what you need and what you can afford first?

max_stirling

I'm not sure who you are addressing, but for me, AWD is a practical choice. RX-8/7 is an emotional choice which is why it is still on the list. Besides, if a MS RX-8 or FE RX-7 is made, it could always be the weekend car.

Currently, I'm very tempted to get a WRX or wait 6-12 months for an STi or Evo (emotional side). The practical me says to hold on to the 626 a few more years and get a fun/weekend/third car. The thing is a WRX/STi/Evo would work as both a daily driver and fun car.

G35 Coupe all the way. I'm still torn between the two. But, between now and next year when I'm getting a new car there are so many new cars coming out that I might fall in love with.

MarkRx

Torn between the Rx8 and the RSX? Hmpf... is all i can say to that... must be an acura fan. i guess it's like comparing a G35 coupe to a 350Z. for about the same price, why not a G35 coupe with leather, etc, it's classier than the Z, but who knows what resale down the road will be... I drove an evo for the 3rd time, an Sti and an SRT-4 all within the last 12 hours... I gotta hand it to the Sti. Most of the magazine articles I have read comparing the two are accurate as far as the Sti having a touch of understeer and not being able to corner as good as the Evo, but it all depends on what you want. I remember driving an Evo when it first rolled off the truck months ago and I got to drive it for about an hour, of course i was excited. I felt more excited when I drove the Sti which i had out for about 30 minutes. After driving the Sti I immediately hopped in an Evo and took it on the same roads that i took the Evo on. I'm not going to go into detail, because everyone has their own opinion. But i'll tell you the instrument cluster alone will sell the Sti if you are willing to pay the markup for it. There are 5 pre-sold at a dealership here in austin, all going for $36,997 + TT&L. fine if you have the money, but if the official 2.0l rally car is your thing, you can have an Evo for $28k now that the hype has calmed down. And for the low budget guys, the SRT-4 isn't bad. Lots of torque steer, it's fun to spin the tires. Sounds good when you turn the key, all for $19,995 backed with a 7/70,000 warranty. (hint-hint) modify the stock wastegate and put better tires on the front and look out evo. (in a straight line of course) Epilogue: The Sti is still an Impreza, the Evo is a lancer and the SRT is a neon. Rx-8 ? A class of it's own... It's got a little bit of everything if you ask me... I thought about the Sti because it's the nicest of the bunch, but you cant open that car up all the time on the streets. With the Rx-8's claimed 0-60 in 5.9 that is plenty enough zip to get you in and out of traffic. You won't be disappointed :) I've owned 9 Rx-7's in the family , all gen's, tricked out my rotaries in the days of drag, autox, etc. I say get an Rx-8 while you can, if you're worried about buying an 8 and then a mean Rx-7 comes out later, so what, there's always going to be better cars out there. This car is going to be remembered. from casting in X-men to the simple return of the rotary.... geez, i sound like a salesman... I dont post much, but that's my 2 cents after driving some "fresh off the truck" cars. :)

That is what I am counting on.

I am just not a sedan 4 door type of person. Out of the 16 vehicles I have owned, 6 have been 4 doors (all of them used at bargain pricing).

Just don't see me buying any new 4 door sedan. The door design of the RX-8 is as close as I plan to get when purchasing any brand new vehicle.

Hmmmmm I would get either an Audi TT or a 2003 Ford Mustang Mach 1, or a 10th Anniversery SVT Cobra. Something that looks awesome, has a rear seat (for dump crap on long trips), is loud, and has a good sound system. But styling is like #1 for me.

Dude I know Audi is owned by VW. If you go to the two respective sites you'll see that the golf gti uses the VR6 design and the TT uses the 5 valve per cylinder design.

And heres a little extra info for you(if you didn't know). Car company these days practically owns some part of another car company. Only Honda and BMW isn't owned by another car company.

And you know why they do this??? Strategy. Competeing companies can buy into the company and learn of new programs up to 5-7 years before they go public allowing them to start their own program to counter the other.

And a 15 degree V-6??? That a tiny angle. Are the 2 side close enough to encorperate them both under 1 head???

rumor has it they will put the vr6 in the new TT, get it?

instead of using the a4 v6, they'll most likely use the vr6, hence, VW

probably cheaper to use the vr6 then develope a new tiny v6 right?

guess you don't care right?

The top of my list of cars to check out are:

RX-8, 350z, G35c

Followed by:

Mazda 6, next gen Eclipse (waiting for specs/design to be announced), Sentra SE-R Spec V, Evo, WRX STi

Or if all else fails, I could just look for a used Geo Metro...;)

I bought an EVO.

Other cars you may want to consider:
VW GTI R32
Subaru WRX STi
Nissan 350z
Infinity g35

Want a cheaper budget:
Neon SRT4

All of these cars are really quick and have very good handling.

The best cars for modifing would be the turbo cars:
STi, EVO and SRT4
each one of these cars are getting huge gains with very small investments. Ex. the EVO with $1900 = 90hp at the wheels

The best image cars:
350z, g35

The best sleepers:
SRT4 (it's a neon that's super fast?), VW R32

I've been waiting for the RX-8 since I graduated from college in 2001. But then the G35C came out. I've been driving my `86 RX-7 for 8 years now, and I anxiously wanted a new car. I came so close to buying a G35C 6MT in December. But my rotary-passions stopped me from doing so. The performace of the Evo and STi are tempting, but I don't want a sedan.

In short, here's my list of contenders:
G35C, Evo, STi

Or I could have an FD, `79 SA22C, GSL-SE, FC N/A, FC TII, FC Vert, and finally an RX-3 Coupe as the people hauler. Wow, a car for each day of the week ;)

There aren't many new-model cars that make me want to buy them the way the RX8 does -- the new Porsche Targa does, but its at the edge of reasonably affordable.

I might go WRX, A4, or 330xi, but I'd probably go used: '99 M3, mid/late-90's 911, or 2001-ish S4.

Or abandon the "sporty" car idea and go with a Honda Element or Protege5, saving some dough in the process.

My wife has said that I can get any car I like, but that if it isn't the RX-8 then it has to be a G35 Sedan! This was the car she wanted before I introduced her to the RX-8 at the Houston Auto Show...

I got her to watch the Motorweek comparison of the EVO and STi and she said they looked ugly/boring, no matter how fast they were.

So if not RX-8 then it will be a 2004 G35 Sedan 6MT with Leather, Premium, NAV, Aero. All G35 orders from June 6th onwards will be for the 2004 model (due September).

Shoe, we almost think a like ...

;)

I already own a 03 MP5 (saved a little money instead of getting the Element or the RSX) but I view this a only a temporary situation for another 3-5 years until I get the RX-8 ...

:D

Buf if not ... I do love the G35 coupe, but I only wish it were a hatchback ... and I also love the Mini-Cooper too!

Still, I might think about the Mazda 6 or Mazda 3 hatchback models, when they finally come out ... but I really want my next car to be a fastback and a hatchback again (I use to own for 13.5 years, a 1990 Probe -it was the best car I've ever owned)

And then there's the new (2+2) 2004 Mustang or the Mercury Messenger (I hope that they'll be fastback - hatchbacks ... if not, maybe I'll like the newly designed Celica or RSX or something else?

Plus I also might like the newly redesigned fastback-hatchback 2004 Prius - but I need to wait and see one in person before I make up my mind ... there's something about the concept that I think is great, but also, I'm not crazy about rit's overall style ...

All in all I've got another 3 to 5 years to make up my mind ...

;)

I was considering a Mini Cooper S and an Acura RSX Type S before I decided on the RX-8. I decided the Mini was just too damn small, and the Acura was overpriced for what you get.
