On a scale of 1 to 10, how happy would you say you are? (1 for unhappy, 10 for woohoo-happy)

According to some research, the Nigerians are said to be the happiest people in the world, even though they live in an under-developped country. Strange but true.

Would you have rated your happiness level differently if you did not have the 8?

Someone is 10-happy? Damn, that's got me depressed; I should take 2 points off my 6.

I'm as happy as a hobo eating a hotdog
I'm as happy as a pig in $hit
I'm as happy as a retard with a spoon

Sorry if I offended anyone, those are just some of my favorites.

I'll turn 46 next month. I'm healthy, I've got strong relationships with everyone who's important to me, and I don't have any mortal enemies (except in Texas). I'm self-sufficient and independent, I have interesting hobbies, and a job that's secure and rewarding... so I gave myself a 7.

Why? Because when I look at the future, I don't see anything improving beyond where it is already. This is as good as it gets; everything's pretty much just going to go downhill from here.

I have the elements that people think makes them happy but I am not. I guess I know some of what goes on around the world and in the US and then just turn on the evening news and you can't help but have sorrow for others which in turn knocks me down as well. I care about others but often I don't have the means to help them. Their help is beyond my capabilities anyway. Having an RX does not make me happy but sometimes when I drive the car I feel a bit "puffy" driving one but I try to keep that emotion in check as its just a car and cars will break down sometimes. Happiness should be within ourselves. Take a good long look in a mirror and tell yourself you are happy. I can't do it totally. I think being in Vietnam, in combat, being shot at and being wounded, on top of all the death and pain I saw, it will impact me till the day I die. I find it difficult to be truly happy whatever that means. I never consider myself above anyone else and at work even the janitor has my respect.

So true Tayninh,

With what Tayninh said, (I have not gone through something as bad a war) I can relate to the sadness of this place we live in. I actually got a little sad this past day after posting so much on the abortion thread and seeing what people said, but I'm a 8.

Things are up and down but I just keep looking forward...keep looking forward...I can't wait...keep looking forward...

So, I'm an 8...I'm a normally very a happy guy!

Try googling nigerian happiest. You should come up with a few discussions on the subject.

One thing I know is that once we've reached a certain level of knowledge, the more we know, the more likely our happiness level will drop. Generally speaking.

It has to do with desire as well. The more you know, the more you can get your hands on, the more you want. The more you want and the more you realize you can't accomplish your dreams, the more unhappy you are.

Also, the less you start off with, the last it takes to make someone happy. If a person have nothing and you gave them a piece of bread, they'll be happy. Until of course they get a bigger piece of bread and them they won't be happy with the small piece of bread now because they've tasted better. Human beings are easily satisfied but not for long, they'll keep wanting more and more. :(

Bread is different than "things" accumulation. That's what commericals on TV do. They attempt to convince you that you should have this car or SUV, this house, this diamond, this vacation and so on. Than the stupid show about being a millionaire. So we see this person show off their house and cars, boats and try to make up gloat and drool over how rich they are. We need to be content with whatever we have and try to help others. I think that will get us closer to being "happier".

Ok, seriously, I'm pretty happy. There is always something I could want more. I can complain about my job or a lot of other things, but when I really stop and think about it I'm pretty happy. I have some pretty good friends and family. I'm 21 years old and have a job with a bunch of 30+ year old people. I also just saw my Job requirements and it says I am required to have a 4 year degree, but I got the job anyway. I gave myself an 8, I'm just waiting for the last piece of the puzzle to come around before I can consider myself a 10.

I've always considered happiness to be a fleeting, transitory thing - a little gift of secular "grace" when the moment you're living in seems exactly right, or you're surprised by some small pleasure. Like grace, you can't work for it or store it up, and it almost always comes unbidden and unexpected. Frankly, people who insist they're happy in a steady-state sort of way creep me out a little bit - an old friend likes to tell me regularly how happy he is, and my first thought is always, "why do you keep telling me this?"

I came across this link the other day - it takes off from a text titled "Chin's Thirty-Three Happy Moments" (he was a 17th-century Chinese playwright, apparently) and solicits other people's little epiphanies, which (in accordance with Chin's format) should end with "ah, is this not happiness?"

http://www.idler.co.uk/html/chin/happychin.htm

Inspired by Chin, I thought about it for awhile, and settled on a representative moment of my own: I was walking across the quad at the University of Alabama one day in the fall of 1987, worrying about a problematic course and doubtless a few other things of no consequence now, when suddenly I found myself caught up in the middle of a whirlwind of leaves. I felt an exhiliration far out of proportion to the event itself; at that moment I was truly happy. The feeling didn't stay, but I've had various other epiphanies before and since - some of 'em car-oriented (a top-down ride in the country is likely to generate one or more), others more fleeting and obscure.

So sometimes I'm a 2, other times I'm a 9 or so. I split the difference and voted myself a 5. When Hamlet asks Guildenstern how he and Rosenkrantz are doing, he says that they're 'Happy, in that we are not over-happy; On fortune's cap we are not the very button." Like those guys, I live somewhere in the middle of Fortune's favors. (Of course, look how they turned out.)

I gave myself a 6.
I have family, freinds and my health. Conversely, I have no ladies i'm interested in, little money to spend frivilously (No the car I want to buy is not frivilous :p Gots to get around!!), school is boring the hell out of me right now, and my hairline is running away from my face.

To start being happy one should start with being humble. Think about if we are preocuppied with self. Do we complain too much about our circumstances? Do we see others weaknesses before strenghts? Why would being humble increase our happiness?

1. It will reduce stress 2. It improves our relationship with others. (we are not always talking about self and rather listen more to others)

You can be happy despite your circumstances. You will not be happy if you try to solve all your problems.

I'd say 9. Maybe that's because I do not have the ability to get stressed out, except maybe once every five to ten years. I don't have anything special but I have joy. I guess that's a different emotion. I seem to be happier after staying away from the political threads too. Arguing never makes you feel better, even if you win one every now and then. I really don't know what would make me happier at this point, but 10 seems to be unreachable here on earth.
