GLENDALE, CALIF. - A commuter train smashed into an SUV left on a crossing by a suicidal man early Wednesday, sending the train careening off the tracks in a wreck that killed 10 people and injured about 200, authorities said. Dozens of the injured were in critical condition.

After the Metrolink train hit the SUV, it derailed and crashed with another train going in the opposite direction. Both trains landed on their sides, sending passengers tumbling down the aisles, authorities said.

The SUV driver changed his mind about suicide and left the vehicle before it was hit, Police Chief Randy Adams said. The man will be charged with homicide, he said.

"This whole incident was started by a deranged individual that was suicidal," Adams told a news conference at the scene of mangled railcars in the suburb north of downtown Los Angeles. "I think his intent at that time was to take his own life but changed his mind prior to the train actually striking this vehicle."

The man, identified as Juan Manuel Alvarez, 26, of Compton, stood by as the train hit the SUV, Adams said. Alvarez had also tried to slash his wrists and stabbed himself, authorities said.

"There is no terrorism or terrorist act involved," Adams said.

It was the worst rail accident in the United States since March 15, 1999, when an Amtrak train hit a truck and derailed near Bourbonnais, Ill., killing 11 people and injuring more than 100.

Firefighters picked through twisted wreckage and carried injured passengers from the trains to a triage center set up in a nearby parking lot.

One commuter train was headed from Los Angeles' Union Station to downtown Burbank, and the other was bound to Union Station from Moorpark, Metrolink officials said. The accident happened a little after 6 a.m.

"I heard a noise. It got louder and louder," said passenger Diane Brady, 56, of Simi Valley. "And next thing I knew the train tilted, everyone was screaming and I held onto a pole for dear life. I held on for what seemed like a week and a half, it seemed. It was a complete nightmare."

In a light rain, firefighters climbed ladders into windows of a battered train tipped onto its side.

Nearly 300 firefighters were at the scene and 35 ambulances were taking injured passengers to hospitals, officials said.

Dazed passengers, some limping, gathered at tables in a nearby store, while the injured sprawled on color-coded mats in the parking lot: red for those with severe injuries, green for those less seriously harmed.

One of the dead passengers was identified as Deputy James Tutino, a 23-year veteran of the Los Angeles County sheriff's department.

As the cars tumbled off the tracks, one of the Metrolink trains struck a parked Union Pacific locomotive, tipping it onto its side, said Kathryn Blackwell, a railroad spokeswoman in Omaha, Neb.

George Touma, 19, of Burbank, said he was called by his mother, who was on one of the Metrolink trains.

"She told me she was bleeding in the head and her arm was really hurting," said Touma, who was searching for her. "I'm really worried because she has vertigo and when I tried to call back she wouldn't answer."

Metrolink began service in 1992 and operates seven lines, part of a multibillion-dollar transportation network aimed at reducing pollution and congestion in Southern California.

On Jan. 6, a freight train derailed at Graniteville, S.C., sending up a toxic cloud of chlorine gas from a damaged tank car. Nine people were killed, 250 were injured and thousands were forced to evacuate their homes.

WOW....I bet that guy wishes he'd stayed in the truck now...that bastard. :(So do the family members of the 10 dead and 200 injured. May he never see the good side of a prison wall again. I know Cali won't give him the death penalty.

He shouldn't get the death penalty, he doesn't deserve it.

I say cut off his right arm and left leg and then sew the top of his left hand to his right ankle. Also cut out his eyes and tongue. And then make him live the rest of his life like that. No assistence from anyone. Just monitor him to make sure he can't kill himself.

Maybe after a lifetime of suffering, he'll finally feel a modicum of the pain that the family of the dead will feel.

Don't look for the death penalty, or a long prison sentence, the guy lacked the requisite intent to be charged with the heavy murder charges. Unless California has a wacky that specifically enumerates his crime as felony murder he would get some form of manslaughter.

The law aside, the whole story is pretty sad. The guy was obviously sick, so you have to feel for him a little bit. However, its hard to feel for someone who killed 10 innocent people.

That's horrible!

I hope he keeps others out of it the next time he tries...

Ten five year sentences plus two hundred 3 month sentences would be enough, if they ran consecutively. We do stuff like that in Texas all the time. :D

At least when I tried to kill myself by train I didn't try and do it in a car.

This was all over the local news stations this morning. The collision occurred right behind a Costco warehouse store; the employees on the loading dock heard the crash, called 911, and ran out with fire extinguishers to see if they could help. Firefighters set up their triage tarps (red, green, and yellow) in the Costco parking lot.

The news choppers were over the scene immediately and every station was broadcasting live coverage. At first no one knew what had happened; it was raining lightly and still dark when the wreck happened and you couldn't even see what was left of the suicidal guy's Jeep. Everyone thought two trains had collided head-on.

The southbound commuter train was fully packed. The Metrolink trains have seats that face both forward and backward, and also standing room in the aisles. The people who were standing sustained the worst injuries, because they went flying forward when the train suddenly stopped. People in the forward-facing seats were also hurt, but the ones in the rear-facing seats fared best -- unless another passenger was thrown on to them.

I'm sure that if the idiot who caused this still wants to end his life, there will plenty of volunteers from the LA Sheriff's Dept. who will be more than happy to help him. :(

What he said. Although I do believe almost all of our laws in our system are too light. If laws were more harsh less people would commit them.

But then again we have a law against cruel and unusual punshment.

Dunno about California, but some states have what's called "negligent homicide" that's somewhere between manslaughter and murder. If it's a 5-year maximum sentence, that could potentially be 50 years plus.

I heard about this at work today. One of my coworkers said, "they damn well better lock the guy up because if it was one of my relatives he killed, I'd hunt his ass down myself!". Personally I hope he winds up in prison as someone big guy's b*tch.

Seriously. WTF... he changed his mind, but left the SUV on the tracks?! I hope both the nice officers and his butt.... opps I meant bunk mate all play REAL nice together.

At least when people do it here, they just jump off the platform in front of the train. Stops train service for awhile and inconveniences everyone, but at least no innocents get injured and his family gets billed for the damages.

This just make me mad, I would put him on trial for murder regardless  It's better to put him behind bar or mental hospital than lets him roam around not knowing what will he be doing next.
