I have seen all the VINs listed for US cars on this forum. I noted numbers ending from 0842 to 2192. The April production of Japanese cars was 2301 RX-8s...so what do their VINs look like?

View Full Version : Question on Japanese VINs gettingan8 05-31-2003, 09:49 AM I have seen all the VINs listed for US cars on this forum. I noted numbers ending from 0842 to 2192. The April production of Japanese cars was 2301 RX-8s...so what do their VINs look like? 7to8 05-31-2003, 06:47 PM Good question...If they built 2300+ cars for Japan, then why are the US VINs below the 2300 mark?Maybe the identifiers in the VIN are different.....some one out there knows and will educate us. 3Rotor 05-31-2003, 07:30 PM Japanese VINs are shorter that US VINs. The VIN on my JC Cosmo is only 11 digits long. CERAMICSEAL 05-31-2003, 07:33 PM I can partially answer that question.Your assumption is correct. The prefixes would be different.U.S. VINs are not the same or at leeast they havent been in the past.Ours have 17 characters and begin with JM if they are of japanese origin for our market. The character after that represents the particular factory that its built at e.g. JM1 vs JM3.Then you have characters that represent the actual type of vehicle.NA orUC or HD or FD.wich brings me to what my strange mind thought was interesting in that RX-8 VINs use FE designation. The japanese would also use this but in a different sequence.I hope I havent bored everyone to death as yet.My job requires me to know this kind of useless info.Ill disclose what that is at sometime in the future. gettingan8 05-31-2003, 07:59 PM Thanks guys .."got it".. |
