Fockin' scientists need to make up their minds :)

LONDON (Reuters) - Cutting down on fossil fuel pollution could accelerate global warming and help turn parts of Europe into desert by 2100, according to research to be aired on British television on Thursday.

"Global Dimming," a BBC Horizon documentary, will describe research suggesting fossil fuel by-products like sulfur dioxide particles reflect the sun's rays, "dimming" temperatures and almost canceling out the greenhouse effect.

The researchers say cutting down on the burning of coal and oil, one of the main goals of international environmental agreements, will drastically heat rather than cool climate.

"When the cooling affect goes away -- and it must do because particles like sulfur dioxide are damaging to humans -- global warming will be much stronger," climate change scientist Dr Peter Cox told Reuters on Wednesday.

Temperatures could increase in the worst case by up to 10 degrees by the end of the century, the researchers said -- much more than current estimates.

Scientists differ as to whether global warming is caused by man-made emissions of carbon dioxide and other "greenhouse" gases, by natural climate cycles or if it exists at all.

Take away fossil fuel by-products like sulfur dioxide without tackling greenhouse gas emissions, and the extra heat will speed warming, irreversibly melting ice sheets and rendering rain forests unsustainable within decades, Dr Cox said.

"The climate will warm more in the future but the ability of the land to store carbon dioxide will be compromised," he said, adding that warmer soil was less able to hold the greenhouse gas.

So in other words, burning fossile fuels doesn't really do anything.

It's like eggs. First they're good, then they're bad, then they're good again, then its only the whites that are good...

Well - think back to the move The Day After Tomorrow. When asked about the ice-age they are in, the scientist says "Yes..and it happened 10000 years ago too! we need to control how we use our resources!"

...but if it happened 10k years ago when we WERE NOT using fossil fuels -that just means it'll likely happen REGARDLESS of what we do, or don't do. :)

Maybe we're just too arrogant in thinking that we can effect the entire planet ourselves. Maybe only minor stuff.

It doesn't matter anyway... I read somewhere that California banned Global Warming.

Maybe "global warming" is just a natural cycle of the Earth. Don't volcanoes pollute way more than car emissions? Aren't volcanoes natural? Forest fires are natural too. Heck, man is natural!

Here is a quote:
Environmentalists don't adhere to the law of evolution that states "only the strong survive." They feel that all animals must always remain and never go extinct. They feel that the environment must always remain the same and never change. They do not realize that change is a fundamental part of Earth's history. Change has and will be occuring throughout the Universe incessantly, whether that change is "natural" or whether it is caused by man, which they must realize is also "natural." They do not realize that man is a part of nature, and that anything mankind does can only be natural.

It couldn't get CARB certification

If you ban it, You can't tax it.

If every treehugger environmentalists out there would realize this, it wouldn't even be a newsworthy topic. It's so nice to see that some people actually realize that the Earth has warmed and cooled dozens of times in history. This is all natural and we didn't do it nor are we speeding it up.

I can't wait until the treehuggers realize that the Earth's magnetic poles have completely reversed a few times before! That will probably spark panic about the next great thing that we caused and should fix.

The Day After tomorrow sucked so bad. It's Algore's movie though so it isn't that surprising.
