I stopped by my dealer this morning to pick up a copy of the accessories brochure. My salesman was not there so I spoke with the sales manager. He was such a cool guy. He found that my car did have a VIN so I was able to get that info. He was very knowledgable regarding the rotary engine as well as RX-7's.

The cool part of my visit was when he loaned me this cool CD-ROM to look at. It is called Mazda-RENESIS Rotary Engine Design and Technology. He explained that it is training material that is going to be shown to all Mazda employees. It is very nifty! Now if I didn't have to return it.....

what you have is called a technical training module. it is for technicians to look at before taking their mazda certified test. i too have a copy. if interested the part number is 9999-95-4589-03. it has the history of the rotary. the comparison between the rotary and a piston. and the design of the rotary.

I received a copy of this same CD-ROM from my dealer today. :)

The full title is 2004 Mazda RX-8 Technical Highlights, and the part number is as per Fubar's previous post. Here's a shot of the cover:

http://www.snikte.net/images/rx-8/techcd.jpg

I've ripped an ISO image of it, and put it on my FTP server:
Address: ftp.snikte.net
User: RX8
Password: renesis

Because it's so large, I've limited the account to only two concurrent logins so that the bandwidth doesn't get split a dozen ways from Sunday - I only have 384kb/s upstream, so it'll take a while no matter how fast your downstream connection is. Please get in, get the file, and get out so the next bloke can have a go. If you have a modem connection, please don't even bother - you'll be there all week!

If somebody with more bandwidth would care to host a mirror, PM me and I'll set you up with a separate account so you can grab it without waiting.

FYI, I've put up a zipped version as well. Although it only compresses by 4%, that's still 23MB less to transfer, so it helps! I'm also in the process of creating a .rar version; if that winds up any smaller than the .zip, I'll put it up as well.

eccles
06-20-2003, 07:47 PM
Well the .rar achive turned out to be 583MB - a very worthwhile saving of 47MB - so I've put it up there, too.

Since most everyone can read either zip or rar, I'll pull the .iso image once the current users have finished downloading it.

Can you please leave the ISO image up as well as mine crashed halfway through the download and it would be great if I could continue that download.

Thanks

Likewise. I'm in the middle of the download this very minute. If it drops out, I won't attempt another DL.

Download a program called Bittorrent and host it with an upload cap. Everyone will download it much much faster.

eccles

Bittorrent looks interesting, but I'm wary of installing new technologies on my server. I might tinker with it this weekend though.

Meanwhile, folks who have already started downloading the .iso, relax. All three versions are there, and will remain until I need the space.

If you haven't already started, and you can handle RAR archives, go for the .rar; if you can't handle .rar, get the .zip; if you have already gotten past the first 20-odd MB of the .iso, stick with the .iso.

OK....it's been about 3 years since I have had to use FTP.

Anybody want to post some quick instructions on how to "get" the file?

Well....just did some digging on the proper commands (excuse my ignorance for all of you FTP wizards), connected to the server, put my username in, and got a message that there were too many users connected. 421 to be exact.

Guess I'll try tomorrow.

91vert,

In your Internet browser (i.e. I.E. or Netscape), type ftp://ftp.snikte.net

When that window opens. Do a right click and select login as:

Type in the user name of RX8, with the password of renesis.

It will try to authenticate the user name and password. IF you get in, you'll see the three files. Right click and do a copy. Browse out to path on your computer where you want the file to be copied and do a paste. Should start transfering the file.

[i]connected to the server, put my username in, and got a message that there were too many users connected. 421 to be exact.[/B]I think 421 is the error message number - the actual number of connections, as mentioned earlier, is 2. Even with it restricted to only 2, it's still taking folks 10+ hours to grab the file, so don't hold your breath until somebody starts mirroring it somewhere.

The CD is 548 megs. Even compressed. It's about 515 meg.

I'm still uploading to an FTP server, which will be done tomorrow morning. It taking about 10 hours for the CD to upload, the same as if someone was downloading it from a Home FTP, because of the limiters put on upload stream. Once it's uploaded you should be able to download it, and a fairly reasonable speed. So tomorrow morning I'll post the link.

Wow, what an awesome CD !!! This thing got tonnes little things you want to know about RX-8. You want to know when this value and that value opens and closes and for how long ? this thing has all the answers.

I highly recommend ANYONE who is interested in this car to get this CD, burn it, and keep it as a collector's item.

I got my file downloaded from eccles (Thanks Bud !).

Given the fact that most people would who want to get this file, may I suggest anyone who is able to host this file setup their FTP so the people who got the file already can upload it to their site so more people can download it.

I will be more than happy to upload my file if anyone wants to host it for other people on this site.

For those that downloaded the .iso file...

I too had a problem getting Roxio 5 Platinum to read this .ISO file ( I am running WinXP)

I WAS ABLE to get the .iso to burn to disc succesfully using Nero 5.5. Anyone can download this utility and use it in its' 'demo' state to make a CD from the ISO image.

Let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

I began downloading the RAR version but if I get the ZIP to work I will disconnect and let someone else get in the queue!

Hmm, sorry if your having trouble burning the CD. I did create the ISO using Nero. This is the file that's up on the www.mackin.net FTP. Sometimes other programs have a hard time using each others "Universal" formats. I'll try to remaster the file again later. But if you don't want to bang your head agaist the wall then use Nero to Burn it. Sorry about the incovenice...

No big deal, I'm glad it wasn't just me. I found a program called ISOBuster that read the file fine. You can download it from CNET. Install ISO buster then open the file within it. Next extract the files for the CD to a directory on your computer. From there you burn the files like any other data CD. The program is free to try and works rather well. Or if you like just keep it on your harddrive it works fine there too.

I love it when univeral formats work so well, its great.

Thanks again for hosting I have enjoyed what i have viewed so far.

I think I might take the exam and see how I do before i watch the whole thing, just for kicks.

If you don't want to download and install Nero, take a look at burnatonce (http://www.burnatonce.com/). It needs ASPI, but if you've got Roxio installed you've probably already got ASPI installed too.

BTW, I think the problem stems from some sort of weirdness with the original CD. My computer has a DVD-ROM drive and a CD-RW drive. The DVD drive refused to recognise the CD when I tried to do a disk-to-disk copy for MaRX8, though the CD-RW drive read it fine. This was the original disk from Mazda, not a copy made from the .iso.

No, the problem is that Roxio is a piece of $h|t! I made an ISO with Roxio that no other program could burn but Roxio. I hate Roxio, and I love Nero. Roxio can go bankrupt and burn in flames as far as I'm concerned. It doesn not offer a lot of features, either. A waste.

I didn't really want to make it all caps, but I wanted to keep it consistent with the other mirrors people have put up. The password is lowercase.

I've raised the connection limit to 4. Remember that when you download the file to switch to BINARY mode (as opposed to ASCII)!

Hi downshift!

Have you put it in "release" priority, I kinda have difficulties getting to it.
Could you also post the ed2k link here so I make sure the only 1 hit I have found is the right one.

Thanks for sharing!

I almost forgot. Thank you to all who've hosted the image. I now feel almost qualified to service the car. ;) I clicked the link to take the exam, but you have to login to a server. Oh well.

Yes, I've put it on "Release" priority. I hope more people would get on the network to get this file so that everybody can leech a bit off from each other.

I just finished listening to everything on the cd and I'll say thanks. I'm starting to learn things about cars, so I didn't got everything but that was talking about my future car so I don't care ;).

dang this is one bad ass CD... thanks dudes..

I dunno about you folks, but doesnt the 8's engine system, CAN, PCM, etc etc.. seem very complex? I'm no mechanic by any means but it seems almost spooky that there are a shitload of parts that can go bad.. A lot of electronic measuring, testing, etc etc even when you turn off the car! On the other hand, boy does it make the system look like a work of art... WHEW!

Um, Mazda, inspect my car as long as you need to.. I sure as hell dont want anything bad on my ride. Check every nook and cranny PLEASE!

I used your link to download the file. WOW, this is awesome info about the RX-8, clearly for mechanics at the dealership. Thanks for putting it up!
