MazdaManiac 01-10-2005, 01:56 PM Bass, guitar, piano, bass clarinet, bari sax, drums, flugel horn, flute, percussion, synthesizer (back when that was still a novelty), violin/viola/"fiddle", voice and a bevy of "idiomatic" instruments like the autoharp, zither, kazoo, penny whistle, recorder (flut-au-bec), accordion and organ. I confine myself to stringed or electronic instruments and percussion these days. I confine myself to stringed or electronic instruments and percussion these days. "This one time, in band class, ..." thats pretty impressive...what i personally find even more interesting is the flugel horn listed without a trumpet right next to it, usually us trumpeters pick it up and adapt. (i have some experience with the flugel horn, i think ive picked one up for like 3 songs total in my life...it does have a mellow sound though) Stone 01-10-2005, 02:28 PM I played the tuba and was known far and wide as the Tubanator! WildOne 01-10-2005, 02:29 PM No skin flute players here, obviously. I can't wait ^_^. rotten42 01-10-2005, 04:11 PM ok admit it, nothing wrong with being in the band :) i played french horn and trumpet, horn in band and orchestra, trumpet in jazz Brother! I also played trumpet, flugel horn and french horn in the jazz band. Previously I had played clarinet and sax. Both my Dad and my brother played those so that's what I started on. I also have played guitar for a long time. I have no problems admitting I was in the band in HS. I got to travel accross Canada and play in venues that held over 5000 people. I also got to meet many jazz greats like Count Basie and others. All in all I've been playing some sort of instrument for 32 years. :) Feras 01-10-2005, 04:16 PM Brother! (slightly different sound too, more marching bandy :) ) 93rdcurrent 01-10-2005, 04:23 PM The girl with the flute... ;) dazygirl415 01-10-2005, 04:28 PM Let's just say that I went to band camp I learned a lot... ;) rotten42 01-10-2005, 05:06 PM when i got to meet fellow screamer Maynard Ferguson i was like wow! awesome man, good choices there. also got to meet Chick Corea, Oscar Peterson and Al Jarreau. I also got to see each one perform but the best jazz concert I've ever seen was Joe Pass! Holy crap this guy was amazing...just him and his guitar for two hours. It felt like only 15 mins. http://www.playjazzguitar.com/joe_pass.html Tigerfootball 01-10-2005, 05:21 PM I played Trombone my freshman year, Baritone my sophomore year, and Tuba my junior year.....then quit that and played football my senior year. rxsleeper 01-10-2005, 05:48 PM do you use a trumpet mouthpiece or a horn mouthpiece (with adaptor) on the mellophone....i started with the latter and later found i could project more with a trumpet mouthpiece. (slightly different sound too, more marching bandy :) ) Every year that I have marched I used my horn mouthpiece with an adaptor until this year, when I used a trumpet mouthpiece. They each have their strengths and weaknesses though. Horn MP: Better tone (less edge) but your chops wear out quicker Trumpet MP: Better endurance but the tone has a little more edge to it I just got my own personal horn instead of the POS one (property of school :p ) and have switched over to a mellphone mouthpiece. Its the best of both worlds. I don't have many problems projecting though, cause I have been the only horn around here since I have been playing. I always had to play at WOT ;) (or close to it) rxsleeper EyeBall Fixer...(o)(x) 01-10-2005, 05:49 PM No skin flute players here, obviously.I think that is in BAND CAMP only but I wouldn't know I was not in band! I hated the clarinet, but they said my hands were too small for the sax.. 3 years later they were like "why arent you playing sax?!" MRX_Rotary 01-10-2005, 09:29 PM I'm in the HS band right now and I play trombone. In fact, we are going to Indianapolis this year to perform at the BOA Concert Grand Nationals (concert, not marching) or something like that. It's a real honor and only 16 or so bands in the nation get chosen to perform there. So, I'm very excited about that! HottRx8Girl 01-10-2005, 09:38 PM Violin from 1st til 9th grade..been under my bed for the last 4 1/2 years..pretty sad! azureknight 01-10-2005, 09:46 PM I play the alto saxomaphone. Been doin it since6th grade, yep Im a band geek...or used to be :). Silver04RX8 01-10-2005, 09:56 PM Drums and Bass Guitar. LiveBlues 01-10-2005, 10:08 PM I didn't play in high school, but from 5th to 9th grade I played trombone. Around 18, I started playing guitar. I still play, but I still suck. Also, during Air Force basic training, I played a baritone bugle in the Drum & Bugle Corp. That was only a 6 week gig, but we did get to march in the the St. Patricks Day parade in San Antonio in 1981. Lots of fun times. SirLeNerd 01-10-2005, 10:49 PM I was a tuba player myself from Jr High all the way to High School. I even came back to help the band for another year afterwards. I'm really quite amazed at the number of tuba players in this fine group! Kari 01-10-2005, 10:54 PM You band nerds!! ...clarinet and drums.. :D rotten42 01-10-2005, 11:07 PM You band nerds!! ...clarinet and drums.. :D maybe so, but horn/ wind instrument players know how to use their lips and train to use their tongue! :D Feras 01-10-2005, 11:11 PM maybe so, but horn/ wind instrument players know how to use their lips and train to use their tongue! :D we are awesome at practically everything...ok thats too much of the trumpeter coming out :) Kari 01-10-2005, 11:14 PM maybe so, but horn/ wind instrument players know how to use their lips and train to use their tongue! :D I said I played clarinet and drums.. does that make me good at everything too? :D Gord96BRG 01-10-2005, 11:17 PM Baritone here, from Gr7 through Gr12 (played piano for 5 years before Band). Marching band in the summer, stage band in the winter! (can't march in winter - valves freeze, reeds crack, etc... ;) ). That was a long time ago, though... Regards, Gordon Xyntax 01-10-2005, 11:19 PM Band geeks and RX-8s!!! ... Guitar, Bass and Drums (rock band unlike most of you nerds! j/k). Ended up teaching some of my friends and settled with playing Drums in the band since I never taught anyone with that. zaglo6204 09-04-2006, 04:17 PM so i got this funny urge to do some diggin' & thought I'd add myself to the list... geeeeeeeeetar & violin :) legokcen 09-04-2006, 08:23 PM Alto Sax for me. I'm sure I have a picture of me in my marching band uniform somewhere.... I hit a high C my first day and freaked out my band teacher. I quit playing that year and started back in the 10th grade when I quit playing football. Played percussion instruments till graduating. BaronVonBigmeat 09-04-2006, 11:08 PM I played trombone from 6th grade on into college some. I took some guitar lessons in high school but never got very good. I later took one of those aptitude tests where it helps you pick a career or whatever, and one of the oddball things it tested was finger dexterity, I think i came in the bottom 10%. Thus, I could play trombone quite well but not most other instruments. Good thing I picked the right one. Maybe I could learn drums, heh. Winfree 09-05-2006, 02:05 AM Played the string bass - you couldn't take it home on the bus, so I could avoid the home work, and I loved the deep low notes - you never had to take the lead parts but sort of filled in all the blank spaces with dark mellow sounds. Did not have to go marching with it in all weathers and the wood grain was beautiful. Later played the alto recorder in an ancient instrument assembly, and was working on trying to play a rankett (sp?) ranquet (?) Played a jazz kazoo in a group called the Freebee Tamborine Orange Kazoo Soul Singers Mistersql 09-05-2006, 06:00 AM so i got this funny urge to do some diggin' & thought I'd add myself to the list... geeeeeeeeetar & violin :) Nice dig there zaglo6204. I missed it the first time 'round. Baritone, and by default I could play the trumpet. It's been 20 years so I bet that I can't play either... you never know. Mistersql 09-05-2006, 06:01 AM Alto Sax for me. I'm sure I have a picture of me in my marching band uniform somewhere.... I'm also sure that you were the second to contribute when the thread came out. WhiteDealershipRice 09-05-2006, 09:06 AM Trumpet... Still do ocassionally Steakboy42 09-05-2006, 11:48 AM Trumpet. Seems to be alot of trumpet players. must be because the trumpet is an attention getting instrument and the 8 is an attention getting car. -Steakboy DukeGG1 09-05-2006, 05:12 PM Tenor drum in a drum & bugle corps. That was a while ago, but drum corps music still gives me the chills when I hear it! StewC625 09-05-2006, 08:05 PM Ah, I was totally into it ... Started with trombone in 5th grade, added guitar in 6th, added electric bass in 7th, alto sax in 9th, tenor sax, flute and soprano sax in 10th. Got good at all of them from 10th through 12th - then played trombone and bass trombone in Univ of Iowa marching band freshman and sophomore years. Through the high school years - band/groups I played in: School bands: Marching, concert, pep and Jazz I and Jazz II in sophomore year; Marching, concert. pep, Jazz I, Blues combo and swing choir combo (accompanyment) junior year; Marching, concert, pep, Jazz I, Jazz II, blues combo and Rockestra (yes, we were called that - playing bizzarre instrumental/rock & jazz shit). Non-school bands - two cover rock bands, one acoustic duet, and one blues band in some combo from 8th grade through when I turned 22. Drum Corps: Played with the Silver Spectrum Drum & Bugle Corp on the DCI tour summer of 1980 - played Bb Marching Baritone Trombone (drum & bugle corp instrument). Recent: Still play aooustic, electric and bass guitars, and dabble with trombone. In an acoustic duet, a virtual band with three of my bandmates (we record tracks on our computers, then dub them onto CDs and pass them along for each other to add tracks), and a cover band that gigs about every other month. BunnyGirl 09-06-2006, 12:48 AM Clarinet, although I went to a private high school and they didn't have a band (too small). I also played flute a little and trumpet a little. Merc63 09-06-2006, 10:11 AM ok admit it, nothing wrong with being in the band :) i played french horn and trumpet, horn in band and orchestra, trumpet in jazz im just asking coz i recently picked up my trumpet again, and im getting back into shape to play some jazz (i was the screamer, so getting back into shape may take a bit), id like to join a jazz band . Wild. That describes me, as well. I started in 5th grade, and by the time high school came around, I was doubling lead in the jazz band as a sophmore due to mu upper register (started playing along with Maynard recordings in the '70s, with his live version of MacAurthur Park from the "Live at Jimmy's" album). I've had the opportunity to hang out with The Kid from Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, and would love to get back into it in a swing band. My stepson got into his Middle Magnet School's jazz band in 7th grade, and I've worked with him on his range so that he'll be ready for high school jazz band and pep band... Played french horn in the concert band, and played oboe for a few months before dciding I liked brass better than woodwinds. And I play keyboards. but screaming trumpet is my first musical love ( I also love playing fluegel horn using a trumpet mouthpeice, to get both the mellow fluegel sound when playing soft, and move to a more brassy sound for upper register work). rotten42 09-06-2006, 10:55 AM ^ ok Trumpet players......what's the highest note you could hit on a consitent basic. I could hit an E above high C using a rather big bore mouthpiece....no jet-tone mouth-pieces here.....to skinny of a tone. I was the second chair in the Jazz band. We had a lead guy that could really wail in the upper register. My forte was solos. Merc63 09-06-2006, 02:20 PM ^ ok Trumpet players......what's the highest note you could hit on a consitent basic. StewC625 09-06-2006, 05:35 PM "One time, at band camp....."(fill in the blank) Ah the dirty secret of us band nerds - there was more sex and drugs going on at band camp, on Jazz Band tours, marching band road games, etc. than the "popular kids" could even process, let alone get. I can remember riding in the back of the big coach tour bus, and making out with two chicks at once - both quite good looking ... ahh the days ... Those athletic types were always separated by gender: Going to a "road" football game, they had all the guys/athletes sequestered in one bus and the cheerleaders and the pom-pom squad in another while us band kids all crammed into the same busses, co-ed and had an orgy while we drove home. Who is the nerd now? And, remember in American Pie when Allyson Hannigan said "And one time, at band camp, I stuck a flute in my (word for feline)"? Saw that ... been there ... really. Ah yeah, gotta love being a nerd. rotten42 09-06-2006, 07:41 PM Ah the dirty secret of us band nerds - there was more sex and drugs going on at band camp, on Jazz Band tours, marching band road games, etc. than the "popular kids" could even process, let alone get. One year at the Jazz band national finals we got kicked out of the Bayshore in Vancouver. The next year when we made the finals again, they wouldn't let us stay at the Chateau Laurier in Ottawa and made us stay at the Sheraton in Hull....we trashed that place too. |
