View Full Version : My trip to Hong Kong (Lots of photos - Dial-up beware)
moRotorMotor 01-08-2005, 04:30 PM It's been more than two months since my return of my vacation to beautiful Hong Kong. This trip was a little extra special because it was my first time there. I got to see where my mom used to grow up and also meeting one of my uncles for the first time as well. I can't say enough good things about my experience in China. It was everything I imagined it to be and more. For all of those who want to go on a vacation and not sure where to go, you should definitely check out Hong Kong.
To my amazement, I only managed to see a total of 3 RX-8s for the entire three weeks I was there. Maybe I was just going to the wrong places. However, while I was on a ferry, a young man came up to me and asked about where I had purchased my shirt (I was wearing my RX-8 Club golf shirt) and I was shocked to have someone share the same addiction to rotaries as me. Although I could speak cantonese perfectly, he thought I only spoke english and so even with his bad english, he tried to communicate with me. He asked where I bought it and if it was "That american guy" as he refered Mark as. :D I was unable to let him know about joining the RX-8 Club...unless he's already here. None the less, I was able to buy a lot of RX-8 models, a Best MOTORing DVD and a Auto-art Rotary keychain.
Not only was my trip exciting in seeing a whole new culture, I also had my uncle as a tour guide and we were able to get along as if we have known each other for a long time. I hope to return in the next year or two and this time with the whole family. My mom also haven't had a chance to see my uncle (her youngest brother for over 20 years. So it will be a very touching moment I'm sure. The only thing I regret was the ride there (Even though the service and food was great). Since I couldn't possibly live any further from Hong Kong, it took almost 20 hours on a plane from start to finish. I have never sat in such a small seat, for so long in all my life. lol I literally forgot how to walk after arriving at my destination.
I thought I'd show you some of the photos I have taken while I was there. The pictures don't do any justice to show the spectacular scenery, but it's my best shot. ;)

The two last pictures show what it's like when the sun sets and the road is no longer used for cars. Businesses set up shop on the street and is one of the best places to go to find good deals in whatever you are looking for. It's actually a huge tourist attraction becuase the they sell a lot of chinese stuff....More to follow...

I am in Tsim Sa Tsui looking across the harbour to the Hong Kong skyline. That building is where Prince Charles handed back the powers to the former president of China, Jiang Zemin back in 1997. It resembles the Sydney Opera House in Australia.

This is the one of the two towers of International Finance Centre. Used to be the tallest building in the world last year with 88 floors. The second tower is much smaller but identicle in shape. Very similar to the WTC in New York. I tried to take the photo up-close but I couldn't fit the entire building in one shot.

Here's the same view at night. It is much better to look at when the sun goes down. A lot of people go to harbour front to romance and take pictures. Around 9 or 10 pm there is a laser show that lights up the night sky. Quite an impressive sight. All the night time shots were taken with the flash off, but whenever I took pictures with the flash off, the picture is blurry if I didn't hold still for a quick moment. I had to borrow a tripod from a lady that was there for these two. Must be something I wasn't setting right on my camera.

I can't remember the name of this bridge. I think it is the one that leads you off the little man-made island that the airport sits on. I think it is a record holder as well, but I'm not sure.
army_rx8 01-08-2005, 07:22 PM great pics...wish i could go to hong kong..ah well maybe one day. Looks like you got to see some great site:D
Razpewton 01-08-2005, 09:20 PM I've been to Hong Kong on several occasions....what an amazing place. Great pictures!!
Some of the best shopping, some of the best dining and some of the best night clubs are here.... The sites are amazing and the energy is addicting...lots to do and see her. I loved this place.... :)
Hong Kong is also one of the most densely populated places on Earth with 120,000 people per square mile in some areas.
RX Renesis 01-09-2005, 03:26 PM Hk is one of the best cities to live in... well thats my opion... the shopping malls r open like until 12 at night... things r so cheap there... night life is great and fun there.... unlike here where everything closes at like 5 or 6pm.... the only thing i don't like about hk/china is the weather there... it's very hot and moiste and it always rain... and there soooo many people walking down the street at any hour.... it's always so packed that u bump into people's sholder all the time... other than that i love HK... well i was born there... so i gotta love it... oh an the air quality there sucks... if ur used to breathing clean air over here.... u'll probally sufficate the first few minutes when u arrive.... no kidding... u'll find it hard to breath!!

Wow! That is wild. I knew the population density was high, but I would never guess it would be that high.
I stopped at Kowloon Park in the middle of the city, and what a park it is! I have never been to a park that was home to pink flamingos and very rare, tropical birds. It almost felt like I was in a zoo. Lol The entire park seemed like miles away from the hustle of the big city as you can only see the tops of the skyscrapers, just beyond the tall trees. There must have been hundreds of benches throughout, but almost all of them were occupied by a person catching some sleep in the middle of the day. I guess it was so relaxing and quiet that I would do the same.

Like Whoa 01-09-2005, 03:53 PM i love them pictures, but my experience in hong kong SUCKED horribly only because i went with my parents last summer. since my brother or my sister didnt go, they took me to some crappy places. i hated every moment of it. but then again i'm only 18 and they knew i didnt know my way and stuff so they wouldnt let me go roam around. but hopefully next summer it'll be cool. however i did go to "mew guy" that place where you buy a lot of cool stuff. and they did take me to see the light show thing that you were talking about but it just wasnt the same with my parents. maybe next year i'll go to hong kong with a friend and just chill there. i was hoping to go into clubs and stuff but that didnt happen. wut suprised me the most is that you have to be 16 to go into an arcade or they'll kick you out.
mtnpass 01-09-2005, 04:06 PM While I served in the US Navy, I was stationed in Guam and Yokuska...I was stationed aboard the USS Holland. We would visit Hong Kong at least once every three months to tend to the submarines patrolling the west pacific. We would anchor just outside the harbor due to nuclear weapons on board and ride the ferrys in to shore. We would always stay at the Evergreen Plaza Hotel or The Imperial..I have not been back since the british turned over control. We would stock up on electronics due to products being introduced there before avail in Guam or states. It is a beautiful place and I enjoyed my time spent there very much. Thanks for the pics, it brings back many fond memories.
moRotorMotor 01-09-2005, 04:15 PM That was too bad man, sorry to hear about it. At first, I thought it was going to suck as well, considering I was spending all my time with my uncle I have never met before. Luckily, it turned out different as it was the best way to "Break the ice" between us.
I think the 2nd and 3rd picture from the top of the thread are taken from a place called "awp lui guy" (guy as in street...in cantonese) it is very similar to "mew guy", only a little smaller I think. The thing I liked about places like that is the incredible prices! After realizing the super low price you can still negotiate it even lower when you pay! :D I wish you a turn for the better when you return to Hong Kong in the near future.

moRotorMotor 01-09-2005, 04:22 PM I'm glad you guys enjoy the pictures as much as I do. The only thing I wish I could do differently was bring more memory cards and even bring my camcorder. I was simply clueless as to just how beautiful Hong Kong was in person. I kept running out of batteries and memory cards! lol
