I don't know for sure if the rx-8 will have a nav. system, but I'm guessing that it will because I have seen pictures of one in the upcoming Mazda 6. Ditto with the sunroof.:confused:

NOTHING CONCRETE HAS BEEN RELEASE BY MAZDA ON WHETHER OR NOT A NAVIGATION SYSTEM WILL COME WITH THE CAR. A MAP IS LIGHTER AND MUCH MORE INEXPENSIVE...
AND NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT A SUNROOF YET, ALTHOUGH A RECENT SPY PIC SHOWS THERE MIGHT BE ONE.

thanks for the information. I actually called Mazda in Irvine CA, and they told me that navigation is probably going to be an option. They were unsure of the sunroof, saying that they are trying to work out the details due to the raised roof. Just FYI in case you guys didn't know- the car is going into JOB 1 status in Febuary. Meaning it is going to production. The estimate about 1 1/2 months till it is on showroom floors. Obviously this is just based on tenative information. Based on the information that I've seen in this forum, you guys might know better, or have more reliable information.

If that's the case, then an unveiling at the Paris International Auto Show in about a month sounds about right, doesn't it? Have it hit showrooms about 2 weeks after that? Hmmm....

I am almost positive that the car will have a sunroof and a nav. system as options because 1) the sunroof is one of the most popular options on most mazda vehicles such as the 626 and the protege. 2) Nissan has a nav. system available as an option in the 350Z, and 3) The new 6 is advertised with a flip up screen on top of the dash, which will probaly become a mazda trademark.

I must admit that I have changed my mind regarding a NAV.

Months ago on an earlier post I said that I would never purchase a NAV. Well that was before I went down to California on business. The rental car had the Hertz ‘Never Lost’ NAV in it and it was simply amazing! I will never again drive in a foreign city without a NAV by my side.

If the price is reasonable I will defiantly put one in my rx8.

Have a nav in my car, love the thing.

I get to take shortcuts (some not quite so short) that I'd never even try before. Now I can't get lost no matter how hard I try! Great when you're lost in the city looking for a freeway entrance. :cool: Oh yeah, it beats the hell out of having a high decibel, short tempered female pasenger giving you directions like,

I just wanted to make sure that I clarify one of my previous statements. When I said that it is scheduled to go into production in Feb....the month and a half time frame to hit showrooms was a month and a half from febuary, so march or april. I just wanted to make sure that I didn't mislead anyone.

MMMm i'd have graduated, worked for 6 months, not paid off my loans, and instead will buy this well engineered choice of transportation.

Those navigation thingies are pretty neat. Does anyone know how they're typically updated? I hear you can get a new cd/dvd every year or something. I also hear some of some of them only come with regional data; you'd have to get a different disc if you go too far.

Thank goodness clinton made the military descramble them gps signals and make them accurate. They were afraid ppl were gonna use the signals to navigate nukes. And it's like... gee, if you're gonna nuke someone, what difference does 500 meters make?

Well, typically you do update them with a Cd from the dealership. Most companies, will do it for free as long as it is under warranty. Then you pay a fee for the update when it isn't under warranty.

As far as the regional issue goes, the newer DVD based Navigation units, can hold lot more information. For example, on the Nissan 350 Z, I disk can store all the information for the entire continental United States.

I've noticed on some of the pictures, the area where the dashboard meets the console, there is an outline of of "box" area. I am hoping this holds the flip up navigation screen!!!!

do introductions and availability typically follow introductions in the US? In other words, when a car is available in the States, is it usually available at the same time in the UK or is there a lag time?

Most, if not all, navigation systems for those of us north of the boarder have proved to be pretty useless, whether GPS, DVD, or CD based.

I've never really thought about it... but I'll have a look... I must say that they are probably about the same... at least for japanese cars... infact we might get some earlier since they are RHD in japan too.

Maps are:

1. Cheaper
2. Light-weight
3. More accurate


I've been in a company provided rental car for the last 3 months, and I've grown to hate the stupid nav. system. It came in handy at first, since I had no idea where I was going, but I quickly found out that it is wrong far too often for my taste. 3 out of the ~dozen times I've used the thing I've ended up about 1 mile away from my target (in a residental area with no indication of which way I was off), 3 miles away on the correct street, so I could find my way there without trouble, or was taken on a long and circuitous route that I never would have picked had I taken the time to find where I was going on a map. The amount of time spent punching the information into the thing is far more than it would take to look at a map. The stupid thing comes on every time I start the car, and sometimes just starts asking where I want to go.

etc. etc. etc.

At first I loved it, but after living with it for a few months I just want to rip it out.

Well, your nav system sucks.

Mine will even take me to the correct building number within 50ft accuracy. :D

FYI--I have the CD navtech system in a '02 BMW 325i.

As an option a GPS navigation system would be nice, but if you plan on driving the RX-8 as fast as i am, you'll find your destination pretty fast, even if you are going in circles, isnt spending lots of time in it half the fun of having a fast car.


Other half, picking up chicks because fast cars have sex appeal. Just in case you were wondering.

If we got the Navigation system Would we beable to integrate it with a tv/dvd tuner/player. Or at least hook a dvd player.
That way For those of who want some entertainment in the car wouldnt have to buy one of those lsd screens.

Sun Roof and Navigation System both will be available as options in the US for sure. Can't speak for the rest of the world as the option packages may be different.

A flip up on top of the dash navi system would rule. The main thing I don't like about navis right now is in most cars they would interfere with you upgrading the headunit. But if its on top of the dash I could have my navi and still have a sweet headunit. That will rule all!

There appears to be a proprietary radio setup that might actually prove to be more difficult. *sigh*
