I am thinking about getting the mp3 player but I have a couple questions:
Does it play regular audio cd's?
Has anyone seen the price anywhere?
What is the "panel" accessory offered with the mp3 player?

Any help is appreciated.

From what I've heard, the MP3 player is also a single disc CD player. The price that I've seen said $350, which is considerably less than the CD Changer. Not sure about the panel accessory?

Concur with Medcina on price (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3618&perpage=15&highlight=accessory%20price&pagenumber=4), and playing of standard CDs. The panel accessory is just the front panel trim. Looking at the scans of the accessory catalog here (http://www.theresslers.com/images/rx8-access/rx8a-4.jpg), the panel appears to be identical for each unit, just slightly different markings perhaps.

Upon closer inspection, it looks like all three panels (single CD, 6CD, MP3) have the usual 'Compact Disc' trademark on the right side. The left side is blank on the single CD, and for the others says either 6CD or MP3 (respectively).

I am definitely going MP3 regardless, but I'm really hoping ID3 tags scroll in the top LED display, and that the unit allows a robust array of shuffling options (e.g. Shuffle disc vs. Shuffle Folder).

Ditto on this remark. It would be cool if it read ID3 tags. I rarely use shuffle features, but given that there could be hundreds of songs on a single CD, a shuffle would be nice to get a good mix of music.

No need for 6CD Changer and spend $500. My $500 deposit will pay for the MP3 player and rotary accents. :D

You should be able to, as the MP3 replaces the top unit, and the MD player is a bottom module. Pretty cool combination.

A$ 500 for MP3 and $800 for MD in Australia... Yeah it is cool but pricy. I have MD and MP3 though

Any way of plugging in an external mp3 player? I've got an iPod which I'd like to use with the RX-8.

Plug and play - NO. But, with a factory service manual, some spare plugs, some solder, and some ingenuity I'm sure it could be done. :D
