View Full Version : Go Texas Longhorns - 2004 Rose Bowl Champs!!!
brillo 01-01-2005, 08:19 PM That was one fo the best games I have ever watched, Michigan played an awesome game and I hope we get to play you guys again soon....that type of game is why we watch college football.
Congrats Horns on a great season :D
Grabitquick 01-01-2005, 09:01 PM You have my total agreement on that one. One of the best Rose Bowl games I can remember, and my Alma Mater (UCLA) wasn't anywhere near the stadium. A great game, one that you wish somebody didn't have to lose.
shelleys_man_06 01-02-2005, 01:19 AM I turned around at work when Mangum nailed that 37-yarder. Congrats to the Longhorns and their arduous BCS journey. Vince Young is freakin' amazing. Watching the games on TV doesn't do this team justice. In my book Texas is always number one, unless by some strange twist of fate the Cougars force themselves into the BCS Utah-style.
Time for a playoff system.
Toadman 01-02-2005, 01:34 AM Hey Texas schools ALWAYS think they are number one. This time it was a reality. :D Incredible game and one to remember! Hook 'em Horns and good job!
(P.S. anyone notice the girl difference between the two scho... ah nevermind, sorry Michigan, in more ways than one.)
canaryrx8 01-02-2005, 08:42 AM That was an unbelievable game, after Cal's flop I was already more than satisfied but winning last night just proved even more who should have been where. Michigan was amazing, hard to believe how awesome freshman are nowadays and their offense will be fun to watch grow. Vince Young is the definition of don't quit, I've never seen a player take games over like he does, all year opposing teams would all but stop Texas only to have him break their hearts. Awesome game from 2 awesome teams, what a fabulous way to start the year. Does anyone besides me think OU is going to crush USC?

Congrats Horns on a great season :DHaving graduated from UM and taught at UT, my loyalties were somewhat divided. So I was happy to see such a great and close game. Congratulations to both sides. It was a game worthy of the Rose Bowl.
And fortunately Ohio State wasn't part of it. :)
Parmer8 01-02-2005, 09:54 AM Sorry to ask this question, but I've been out of the country and just got internet connection, what was the score? It's faster and easier to get info from this forum.

They kicked a field goal with two seconds left on the clock to end it. I watched the last three minutes of the game and saw some of the highlights afterwards, what a match-up. It still doesn't ease the pain of being an LSU fan this season but it was still good to see a southern school beat a northern school.
I think OU will kill USC. The only times SC faced a team with any strength they won by a missed field goal. It should have been Auburn and OU. Screw the BCS and give me a playoff. Pee-wee=playoff, high-school=playoff, professional=playoff, college=nobody really knows how it works. I will gladly watch college football over professional, but at least at the end of the pro season you get ONE undisputed champion.
brillo 01-02-2005, 12:34 PM I agree. SC is going to get rolled by OU. I really feel for Auburn, to win out in the SEC and not be in the national championship is a national travesty. I hope that SC and the Pac-10 get there teeth kicked in along with all the west coast media hype. I was happy to see Utah handle Pitt, the Big East has got to go as a conference, what a f'ing joke.
buzzardsluck 01-02-2005, 12:51 PM fire mac brown and ill like the longhorns again
brillo 01-02-2005, 01:08 PM I think that game more than anything was finally clearing a mental hurdle about Mac and big games. Hopefully now Okie doesn't look so scary anymore. We can win big and when it counts, sure I'd like a better OC than Greg Davis, but I like Mac and Robinson and I think we can win, win fair, and win right with them.
I never want to turn into an florida or a nebraska in terms of ethics and coaching. Mac does things the right way, and i have faith we will have a national championship soon.

If the "the right way" means getting charges dropped for drug possession for at least two players not to mention breaking and entering and assualt charges then yes he is doing the things "the right way". Or do you mean how so many players happen to get minor league baseball contracts to the independent Round Rock team that is owned by an alumnus? Yup it is good he doesn't run his program like Tom Osbourne did at Nebraska.

hey buddy, where do you get your facts from? None of those charges were "dropped", and not a single player plays for the Express, maybe next time you want to instigate, at least get your crap straight.
brillo 01-02-2005, 10:09 PM I’ll never say Texas has the cleanest program on planet earth, but as I know people who played for UT, it’s a damn good try. Sure you have a player here or there that gets into trouble, but by in large, most of our players are standup individuals who leave the program better than they found it. We don’t pay, bribe, or excessively gift our players, our players have to maintain decent GPA’s and Texas doesn’t have a general studies program for athletes, all of them have to have a real major. We got some bad press b/c our graduation rate for football was low, but that didn’t take into account folks that transfer out, which happens a lot since our program recruits such awesome talent, and a lot of guys want to move to a school that will give them field time. If you take that away, our graduation rate for players is well above the national average.
All of our athletes from Track to Football get the same accommodations, facilities and benefits. Do football players get cut some slack? I’m sure they do, but we don’t have players arrested for selling crack, shooting gun off of dorms, getting DUI’s or beating up there girlfriends like (insert your favorite football factory here).
When we do win a national championship, I know I’m going to feel good about how we did it.
babylou 01-02-2005, 10:29 PM Texas Heisman Hopeful Gets Jail Time
Fri Aug 6, 9:08 PM ET
By JIM VERTUNO, AP Sports Writer
AUSTIN, Texas - Texas senior running back Cedric Benson was sentenced to eight days in jail after pleading no contest Friday to misdemeanor criminal trespassing for forcing his way into an apartment in 2003.
But due to crowding at the jail and credit for good behavior, he will likely only spend a fraction of that time â?? if any â?? behind bars.
"We don't have beds available," said Travis County sheriff's spokesman Roger Wade.
Police said Benson forced his way into an apartment last October to search for a stolen television.
The charge was a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail. Travis County Judge Elizabeth Earle also ordered Benson to pay a $1,000 fine and up to $600 in restitution for the apartment's damaged door and court costs, said Benson's attorney, Brian Carney.
Benson, who was allowed to serve his jail time on weekends, will be with the Longhorns when the team reports to training camp on Monday.
Benson's eight-day sentence was cut in half for good behavior, Wade said.
Benson was also given credit for being in jail the day he was arrested and an additional day for checking in Friday and being released due to jail crowding.
If he checks in Saturday and there is a community service project available, he'll be credited for two days and finish his sentence. If there is not a community project, he can complete his time on Sunday, Wade said.
"He's not being given any preferential treatment," Wade said.
Benson should finish his jail term before the season opener Sept. 4 against North Texas. He served a one-game suspension after his arrest last season.
"I understand that I made a mistake and I'm taking responsibility for my actions in accepting my punishment," Benson said in a statement released by the school.
Carney said Benson accepted the jail time rather than drag out his case â?? and potential publicity â?? through a long probation period during the coming season.
Prosecutors offered Benson a conviction with probation for a year with community service, anger management counseling and similar fines.
"I had some options in how it was handled, but I think what I accepted will have the least effect on my teammates, the coaches and everyone at UT. I didn't want this to drag on through the season," Benson said. "Even though it's more difficult on me by taking care of it now, it's in the best interest of my team in the long run."
Coach Mack Brown said Benson's plea brings "closure to an issue we dealt with last fall with Cedric. I know he's glad to have this behind him so he can move on."
A likely Heisman Trophy contender this season, Benson has been one of the most prolific ball carriers in Texas history with 3,706 yards rushing and 45 touchdowns.
babylou 01-02-2005, 10:30 PM EDWARDS, BROCK
University of Texas fullback Brock Edwards was sentenced to two years probation and 200 hours of community service and was ordered to pay $5,700 in restitution after pleading guilty to assault in a fraternity fight last year. Edwards, 20, pleaded guilty on Thursday. He had been charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. The charge was reduced to misdemeanor assault at the victim's request, prosecutors said. According to Travis County Assistant District Attorney David Luna, Edwards punched Thomas Graham in the face, knocking him out, and then kicked him in the face. Graham suffered a broken nose and had reconstructive surgery, Luna said. Edwards also was fined $1,500 by state District Judge Jon Wisser.

BENSON, CEDRIC
4/02
The remaining two misdemeanor drug and alcohol charges against Texas running back Cedric Benson were dropped Monday after city officials decided there wasn't enough evidence. Midland City Attorney Keith Stretcher said he dropped the charges after a review of evidence indicated authorities "could not meet our burden of proof" for drug paraphernalia and alcohol possession charges against Benson. Benson, 19, and Melanie Robinson, 20, were arrested at Robinson's Midland apartment April 27 after police responded to a call about loud music. Both defendants were charged with possession of less than two ounces of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and being a minor in possession of alcohol. The drug possession charge against Benson, a misdemeanor, was dropped last week for lack of evidence.

The six year graduation rate for UT football = 27%. The national average = 55%. For Texas Tech = 59% and Texas A&M = 50% and OU = 43%. Using your premise that disregarding UT transfers would make the UT average "well above the national average" (55%) would mean that more than 52% of the players at UT transfer away. In addition, your premise disregards that transfers or losses occur at other universities.
Mack Brown is obviously a good coach and the UT program is doing well. However, you guys need to get over the egocentrism that you are all that is good.
Finally, can you name the last UT coach to go 0-5 against OU?
Darrell Royal, that who. Who also is a Sooner alumnus.
ricecookie 01-03-2005, 09:48 AM You know what stinks? I love UT, but living in Cleveland and not having Satellite or Cable, I don't get to see any of their games. Anyway w00t! :D
aggietiff28 01-03-2005, 10:42 AM Obviously I am not a TU fan...but I will have to say that it was one of the best bowl games that I have ever seen. Much better than the A&M game that we left before the 3rd quarter was over. Good job Horns!!

nobody who is a real horns fan has the impression that we "all that is good", but the fact remains that Ut is one of the cleaner programs and that Mack has far more integrity and class than 80% of the other coaches out there. Tell me how many times you have seen any other team score the jersey number of a fallen teammate and kneel at an extra point to preserve the score. Tell me how many other coaches make it a point to congratulate the other team before even so much as a word about their own after a historic victory. i'm sorry you're so jealous of their success, but there is no need to come on here and talk a bunch of nonsense about things you don't know anything about.

My last three posts contain third party information to back up what I have said. You have no third party information to back up anything you have claimed. Yet I talk nonsense and know nothing about the situation?
