You may have missed the fun we had at Road Atlanta on Oct 9th and again on Dec 11th but don't let the next event pass you by!

Our next Road Atlanta track event will be a NASA HPDE on March 19 and 20th. That's right - it will be 2 days of track excitement and driver education. To register, go to https://www.nasaproracing.com/nasa_event/show/?event_id=190. The cost of the 2 day event is $299. There are 4 HPDE groups. HPDE1 is for novices and it gets you an instructor riding with you. HPDE2 is for someone with track experience and is solo. HPDE3 is the really fast group and HPDE4 is for the instructors. More than likely you should go for the HPDE1 group if you havn't done NASA before. They can sign off on you and bump you up to HPDE2 as I understand. If you have questions visit the NASA SE forum at http://www.nasaforums.com/viewforum.php?f=42&sid=a2fa535ca4651f73cae6af4afb99af3c to determine which group you should run in. The main NASA website and forum also have tons of info on the HPDEs. Also, make sure you sign up for an instructor if you are in HPDE1.

If you are not a NASA member you will have to buy a NASA membership for $35 (I think). It includes a subscription to Grassroots Motorsports magazine which makes for excellent reading for those of you have more motor oil than blood running through your veins. The membership also gives you free entry to NASA events as a spectator. It sounds like a cool organization and the weekend features several different car classes of real wheel to wheel racing. This makes the weekend fun as a participant and a spectator.

If you aren't sure whether you want to do this, read some of the posts in the December or October track day event threads. There are videos in this forum from my car as well as Legokcen's car.

From an organization stand point, the plan at this point is to have a Friday evening get together with details to follow. Hopefully Mazcare will be able to accomodate us again. Additionally, our friend and fellow forum member SilverEight will be taking stills and video from various vantage points around the track and will cover our event as a journalist with possible coverage in a rotary publication. We will probably have several vehicles equipped with cameras for exciting RX8 footage which can be produced into DVDs or shared in other manners.

I look forward to sharing the track with the great new friends I have made through the forum and the previous track events. I also look forward to seeing our group of enthusiasts grow in number. I hope we can get some of our brothers and sisters from around the country and the RX7 club to join us and experience this awesome roadcourse.

Happy New Year and see you at the bottom of turn 12!

Anyone up for sharing room/suite for friday/saturday nights?

Is Charlie going to this one? I'm gonna run the Kumho's this time....for the $ what a great tire....I even like them better than the Pilots I had. I could buy almost three sets of these for what I had in the Pilots (which I sold the same day I got these).

Can't wait....just two months away!!!

Pam, Denny, splan, you in???

Phlash

It wouldn't be the same without you. You seem to be the fastest 8 out there so we need you to lead the way. As for the video, I used mini DV which is a digital tape format.

And yes, Phlash is the official tire sampler. We expect write ups and recommendations. BTW, why didn't you choose the Kumho MX tires? Do you have snow and ice to deal with in TN?The ASX is getting great reviews.....it's a W rated tire, really quiet, and really sticky in the rain. It has a new tread compound that allows it to be rated at a 30k tire (yeah right....I'll believe that when I see it). So far, I'm very impressed for 140 a pop......I can go through 2.5 sets of these for the $'s I had in the Pilots. Sold the pilots for darn near what I paid so I see me using that $'s for the flywheel install and NASA event.

olddragger
01-05-2005, 01:38 PM
Nabil,
I don't know about being the fastest 8 out there--I think it may be because I am the only one with bifocals--I can't see the track so I just floor it! Thanks for the compliement though.
Looks like I will need to borrow a camcorder. Mine is the old minicassette type and the quality may not be good.
$299 for TWO days. Thats a good price. That way we can take our time learning as there will be PLENTY of track time. Although by then my stock Ponzo's will have about 15000 on them.
Since this is a 2 day event I'm trying to invite the family along for a while (then they can do other stuff if they get bored).
My custom intake will be much more refined and I have enlarged the intake pipe from 3 inches to 4. Any bigger and I might start sucking birds up that thing!
Phlash I hope that flywheel works out for ya man. Can't wait to hear the differance in the quicker revs.
Meanwhile march is a long way off. I'm trying to get enough funds to purchase a canscan, egreddy software and cable so I can custom tune my cz unit. Others are getting a 30hp increase by doing this and I dont know of anyone in the state of Ga that has done this. I may as well be the guinea pig. I may even look into the midpipe just for track days.
later guys(and Pam)
Oh by the way Pam, I have be bragging about you to the locals here!

I'm in and registered for group 1 since the last track event I went to was a PCA in 98, or was it Peachtree BMW?

As far as helmets, the website says M90 or SA 90 are required. That means SA 1990 or M1990 right? so M2000 is good to go?

I'm looking forward to shooting you guys on and off the track at the NASA event. Thanks for letting me be part of the group even though I'm not racing. I think you will enjoy the images as much as I will enjoy taking them.

A couple questions:
1. How many times will you get on the track during the two days?
2. How many laps will you go each time?
3. How many different classes will you guys be running?
4. Are there warm up or practice laps outside of the scheduled events?

What I'm trying to find out is how much time I will have to get around the track and be in different locations. I may be riding my bicycle (I'm not sure yet) and it gets REALLY hard for someone as out of shape as I am. Best to be as efficient as possible.

4. There is track touring at lunch where speeds are limited but I am not sure how it works exactly.Awesome! Thanks

As Charlie put it..."it's got some snap"

Not real noticable until you get the car to 4500rpms and above. Pick any gear, at that point it really lights up. Also spins down faster....that took a little practice to keep revs where I wanted them when downshifting. The car sets into a cruise groove about 10-15 mph higher than it did before (85-90mph vs 70-75 before). So, I find (catch) myself cruising at a little higher speed and have had to make an adjustment there as well. It may be a fluke, but got my best tank of gas ever after the install. 288.3 miles with the amber light just coming on. Pushing it, I bet I could have seen 300 miles on the tank. I'm happy with the upgrade. If things are this much better with a steel lightweight flywheel, then an aluminum flywheel must be the cat's ass. Maybe when the clutch needs to be replaced.

I just agreed to purchase front and rear RB sways with endlinks from someone. Hopefully I should have them next week. Also looking to buy TEIN FLEX coilcovers and the controller for them. Unfortunately, looks like I'm gonna have to change to a different strut bar due to the fact the the remote damper controllers won't fit under the CP brace I just got...grrrrr....so a MazdaSpeed brace may be in my future and I'll sell the CP unit. God knows I can ship the CP unit to someone a whole hell of a lot faster than I got it......now if I can just find a deal on the MS strutbar......

If you like a B&B, you may want to try Whitworth Inn (770-967-2386), it’s close to Lake Lanier (not on the lake). It's off of McEver (Peachtree Industrial). My Father-in-law stays their when comes to visit. Traveling from Road Atlanta to Oakwood, go to McEver Rd, turn left, go about 5+ miles? If you want more info give them a call.

Others:
Country Inn & Suites, Oakwood: 770-535-8080
Comfort Inn, Oakwood: 770-287-1000
Jamison Inn, Oakwood (Fairly New, across from Gainesville College): 770-533-9400

Below is a summary of my goals for still and video coverage of the NASA event for the participants of the RX-8 Club.

Still Photography:
1. Support Paddock Area - Candid images
2. Pit Row – Candid images
3. Turn 1 – Rushing up hill (infield)
4. Turn 1 – Looking back to turn 12 (infield)
5. Turn 5 – S’s in the background (infield)
6. Turn 6 – At dusk to get soft lighting from sun behind back, use flash (infield)
This is an awesome shot if you have reflective graphics, don’t really expect anyone to have that though.
7. Turn 7 – Sliding in apex (infield)
8. Turn 10B – 10A in bkgrnd (from sitting area)
9. Turn 12 – Cars together exiting apex in drift (before Pirelli Bridge)
10. Pirelli Bridge – Fast action with car sharp and bkgrnd blur
Smile big now… this is a cool shot just past the finish line.
11. Exiting track at tower (good close-up w/slow moving car)
12. Post race miscellaneous shots

Video:
1. Support Paddock Area – Introduction of drivers w/Interviews & showing mods to car.
2. Pit Row – Misc shots with cars still & exiting to track.
3. Turn 1 - Rushing up hill (infield)
4. Turn 1 – Looking back to turn 12
5. Turn 5 – S’s in the background (infield)
6. Turn 6 – Great fast closup shot of drivers in action (infield)
7. Turn 7 – Sliding in apex (infield)
8. Turn 10B – 10A (from sitting area)
9. Turn 12 – Racing downhill w/bridge in bkgrnd
10. Turn 12 - Exiting apex in drift

Video Post Production:
1. Composite - stills, my video, driver videos, logos, descriptive text or what ever needed.
2. Convert completed digital to CD: Quicktime/WMV multiple resolutions for viewing on the web and from CD.

Web site:
Dedicated to the event. To include stills and edited videos.

Damn! Am I going to do all that?

As I mentioned earlier, is it possible to get someone to have a second video camera showing the gages? It would be really nice for me to be able to sync a PIP of the tachometer with the standard view outside windshield and gear shifting?

I do have one concern; I’m thinking it may be a good idea to remove your tags and to keep any interviews on a screen name basis. What do you think? Is this a possible insurance risk or not?

Suggestions welcome!

YeeeeeeHaaaaaaa! We gonna have a blast! :D

WOW!!! You're bringing what camera and support crews for all this????? As I mentioned in my earlier post... "my goals" :D . Aim high, right? Actually I should be able to pull most of this off due to the 2-day event and the number of times you guys go around the track. As a compromise because it is just I, you will not get one contiguous session from all around the track. It will be built over the entire weekend. This is just going to be a lot of fun and what ever I pull off I will just be happy to participate with you guys.

I have space to dump the stuff and host if you need it until you get things set up on your end.OK, let me see how things are going in the process. I'm not sure how much of my 500megs are left. I may need to clean up my space a little. Do you have any limitations or is this your web server?

Space is my limitation. I have about 2GB to play with still.....I need to clean up some things, but safely, 2GB.

"Love to. Got any details?"

http://www.mazcare.com - The Friday before - we usually start gathering around 2:00-3:00 if we're getting work done, around 5:00-6:00 if not- for technical inspections. Then go to dinner somewhere. Then we stay out and party and race all night and when we see the sun starting to come up, we then do breakfast. This time we are going to pinpoint "the" Wafflehouse we eat at before the event....

I would love to hear of an almost free suggestion for the graphics. Wouldn't it be cool if we had Racing Beat sponsor us by supplying magnetic numbers sporting their logo? Who wants to persue this?

I have magnetic numbers for my car during autocross events. Go to Michaels or any other hobby store and get some magnetic sheet to print on. I print out several things on this to put on my car. The numbers I have cut out, but I put some RX-8club graphics that I printed out to put on as well. Plus I have a couple of Panoz bumper stickers that I got from the last event that were like $2. I stuck these on the magnetic sheeting too. My car almost looks sponsored. :)

BTW, don't try to stick anything magnetic to the hood, trunk, or back doors. They are aluminum and aren't wont hold a magnet.

Hi Gang,
It's my first official post! I want to let you all know that Mazcare will absolutely hold an open house/tech inspection/bullsh.. session the Friday of the event. Also wanted to let those of you on the flywheel fence that I have ordered the ACT chromoly 9 lb flywheel to guinea pig on my own car. I should have it this week so if only I can remember how to put it on I'll have an opinion by next week. Stay tuned, Scott and I are looking forward to seeing how it compares to RB and Mazdaspeed. The price is very attractive at this point!
Still no word on eta on RB intakes but I'll keep on them.

Finally, I am probably going to come up and run on Saturday with you guys. I've not registered yet but it sounds pretty tasty. Nabil kind of stoked the fire the other day and driving the car last night didn't hurt either.

Can't wait to see you all again real soon. Be safe.

He also said that if it works out he will have the greddy turbo system on AND the nos as well. He is very knowledgeable about the 8 etc. Hell he has been running a 14.1 1/4 mile time WITHOUT nos. Seeing his car and having the oppitunity to share the brotherhood will be great. I would love seeing an 8 blowing the doors off a co6 or a viper! Our little group continues to grow. Oh and by the way Silvereight Charles really would be interested in meeting you. I think RX turner mag was interested in doing and article on him and his nos setup.

I think RX turner mag was interested in doing and article on him and his nos setup.
can it get any better!?
errr silly me that could be ME getting the greddy turbo!
later guys I'll keep all informed

Hey gang,
I don't wan't to to be Debbie downer BUT, I paid my homeowners policy today and talked w/my State Farm agent (who is a Road Atlanta fan) about track event coverage. Basically he said that I would not be covered if the car were damaged on a race track. I didn't push it but has anyone else gotten clarification from their agent? To me it's like asking a cop if it's ok to speed but I really don't want to find out the hard way i.e. Porsche Boxter. Any feedback?

Silver , i got you pm and will keep you updated as things are finalized.
Charlie, In reading about this in the sponsors sheets it seems they have never had a claim turned down. They class themselves as a high performance driving school. that a differant legal term than a being on a race track---defined as "racing". Would they not cover you if you where driving across the track to park? Legally you are not participating in a race. Hope that helps a little. Now as far as warrenty is concerned welll that I don't know!

Charlie Prudential (Meristar) considers it "school" , "drivers ed" etc. As long as the company is a legit and lic business/group that "teaches" (has and uses instructors), it is covered. That's how Panoz is seen and the NASA group as well. Now when one chooses to AutoX, that's a different story. My insurance company states "no way on autoX"

I thought my ears were burning so I checked out this thread and, lo and behold, O.D. is talkin' 'bout me. Actually, he invited me to read this thread and get the lowdown on the ATL event.

Denny has convinced me that Road ATL would be a great place to debut the turbo/nitrous set up and get some "seat time" in prep for the trip to Cali in the event I am selected for the USCC. Anyway, my plan is to drive down to meet all of you in the Atlanta area and hang out at night. If it isn't too pompous of me to think that some people may want rides in an 11-second RX-8 that can hang corners, stop on a dime, and still look stock, then I wouldn't mind sharing just how simple all of this modding stuff has been with those willing to discuss it.

Thanks to all for the invite and support.

I don't mean to be a mooch or anything but in order for me to get all the stuff done that I need to in time for March, I need to be able to lean on as many of you as I can as soon as I arrive(not monetarily, just logistically). By that I mean letting me hang around like a younger sibling while I learn about the road racing gig. I can talk and drive all day on the drag strip but I am nothing more than a Luke Duke when it comes to courses. The only experience I have is running from the cops back when I was young. If you guys wouldn't mind saving a spot for me wherever we end up throughout the day it would make my trip easier to coordinate. Right now I have to focus on getting my hands on the next available GReddy kit ASAP so I have more time to install and tune the whole deal. Of course, I would be a prick not to allow a camera in the car. At least a few people would be interested in hearing an RX-8 at 9,500 rpm with a turbo and nitrous.

So where do I go to secure a spot in all of this mayhem?

Thanks for your patience.

FYI - When I email RB with a sway install question, I asked where the intake stood at this point. This was Jims answer:

The intake is getting REALLY close to being completed.
There are so many steps and processes involved with the casting, machining, drilling, and plating process for all the individual components, and a "hiccup" by any one of the vendors causes a big headache. We have had to overcome a couple flaky vendors during this production run, but everything is coming along nicely.

The cost figures look better than they were a couple months ago, and although this unit includes MUCH more than the simple tube/filter units that are available, the price will still be competitive.

Nabil, it's not that I am lacking confidence it's just that I need to focus on the turbo install and tune right now. To know that my "homies" have my back will help me to just jump into the event without concern as opposed to having to pore over the details. If you guys got the details covered then I'll make sure I represent well.

My car is not necessarily set up for drag racing. If it were I wouldn't have the traction problems that I do. It's really just a stock RX-8 with a bunch of crazy bolt-on stuff that happens to work well. The cooling and oiling systems are over-engineered so I am sure I can rag on this car all day and it will be fine.

I figure with just the turbo the car will run very close to the way it does with the nitrous, which is to say mid to high 12's. Adding the nitrous should take it to the high 11's. The nitrous/turbo combo is for the street/drag strip and the turbo alone for the course. Most courses don't allow the use of nitrous oxide.

Charles,
Do not worry about the logistic's. If you think enough of us and our event to drive as far as you have too, and are willing to share your knowledge about how you have worked on your car then thats the least we can do. Just register for the event per guides on this thread and show up. Your'e covered dude.
Running a road course in the 8 is like bringing it home. These events are NOT races. (Well sometimes it can kinda turns into a small one.) They are very safe and controlled(NOT speed limited). I know you like learning and believe me you are going to learn a lot. apex's, braking points, squaring off a turn, exits speeds, entry speeds, importance of the cool off lap, tire pressures, how smoothness equals speed ,happy tire sounds, rebel yells, how NOT to turn on your windshield wipers while turning, etc, etc.
Oh and by the way, a little hint, run with your tcs/dsc ON. Believe it or not the car is smoother and faster that way. Plus it can really save your butt.

Okey Dokey, I just signed up for the event! I'm stoked now! I may bring the racig slicks to the event once I learn to use them. With the DCS on, they are great. They only slipped when I put on too much power during a turn. Once the tires are hot, they stick like glue, so I'd like to see what they do, exp on turn 7.

The rear sway is a breeze, the front one takes some wiggle work (okay, okay, a LOT of wiggle if you do it alone-it makes up for the rear being so easy), but despite the RB instructions, can be done with one person. I have the end links as well.

Yeah - it is PC. As for modifications to the track since 2002 I think that was the seating area opposite 10A/10B. Also last year they added the loop in that area for the Drift Atlanta event. Hey Phlash - congrats on the suspension bits. Sounds like you have the tricked out ride! Should be kick ass around the circuit. My car is at the dealership today getting some miscellaneous dash rattles fixed. Hope to pick it up in a few hours.

I don't know when we'll find out about our numbers. I am going to take Lego's advice and see if I can find something at Michael's that I can print out on my computer and make myself. I am thinking some kind of adhesive backed vinyl or magnetic sheets.

Has anyone bled or flushed their brakes yet? I think I will at least bleed my brakes but am leaning towards buying some ATE Super Blue Racing Dot 4 brake fluid and doing a flush. It would be a good opportunity to do the braided brake and clutch lines too. The more I think about it, the more I lean towards making that my mod for this track day. Each track day gets a new mod! Hopefully one will be a RB intake.

Scott at Mazcare states the braided brake lines ROCK! He did them on his ride and states that it gives the brakes some "meat". I know it did on the clutch line when I did it. RX7.com has some great pricing on them. I'll tell ya, I was really surprised at the brake feel difference that the MS front strutbar brake brace made.....Charlie had told me about it, but I guess it really didn't register until I made the change and really got on the brakes.....it's pretty impressive.

Hey Phlash,
Lets see ,you have
1-ms strut bars(does help braking as it has a master cylender brace on it and if you watch the mc while someone is braking hard you can see it move!
2-rb sway bars/springs
3-ms flywheel
4-coilovers
5-cat back rb of course
6-green filter
7-kumho tires
and various other cosmetic's
damn dude you have a sponser or what?!
Now all you need is 4 wheel drive~! JK man.
Question-- I have been thinking about the stut bars, I know about the brake feel but what about the streering. Did you really notice any differance?
another question-- the flywheel----can you really tell the differance by the seat of your pants? Or does it just seem to rev faster? How much does Charlie charge to install that thing? Too me it's a lot of money if there is only a little differance. If it's a big differance then maybe.

I had the CP racing bar for a while, so on the steering feel, yes at first...now I forget what it was like before. The brake brace made the big difference I can feel now.

another question-- the flywheel----can you really tell the differance by the seat of your pants? Or does it just seem to rev faster?
Both....above 4500rpms, it awakes!

How much does Charlie charge to install that thing?
Have to ask Charlie on that.....

Too me it's a lot of money if there is only a little differance. If it's a big differance then maybe.

You'll have to drive mine with the MS unit and Charlie's with the ACT unit (2/3 the weight of the MS unit). You'll see.....an option would be to wait until clutch replacement time to do it.

Hell I have to keep up with you people.
yea, i will be staying somewhere near the track but its too soon to tell exactly where.

Howdy gang,
As promised I am the guinea pig of a few odds and ends and the bottom line is the flywheel that I spoke of is the best I've installed so far! The response is great as expected, the balance is perfect (wasn't sure), driveability is unaffected, and the price is better than anything else. Denny, I left you a voice mail about it but just order it and we'll put it on for you.

Still no real definate word on the RB intakes (hurry up and wait)

Y'all have a safe weekend and I'll speak to you soon.

It'll be interesting to see how we all do since everyone has differently modded cars. I still think that I'm the barrier still in this car's performance. I'm going to work on myself a little more before dropping some coin to make it faster. I have a feeling I'm going to passed a lot during the March event.
I have decided I'm taking the racing tires though. I'm curious to see how they will do at high speed. Definitely keeping DCS on the WHOLE time.

Lego, did you ever make any connections about writing an article? Just wondering. Publishing is not required but it would be really nice to see such a huge qty of 8's represented in a magazine. My main interest is just having a great time and putting together a great package for us to enjoy and show off.

Anyone know if this is a spectator event or is it closed to participants, family and friends like the last event?

Thats great news Ray, and as previously stated, just register and show up,dont be concerned about a place to stay etc. Later, as the day gets closer we will make a more detailed plan about when and where to met up etc. Point of possible interest for you. There is 104 leaded octane gas is available at Road Atlanta.Just a thought, but that may help you try that 75 shot without having to adjust the timing? (if the turbo etc doesnt work out)
To the best of my knowledge this has the making of the largest gathering of rx8's on a track. All you business minded people, what do you think about some sponsership possibilities? Since this is legally listed as a high performance driving school(not a race hehe) do you think there may be some interest in a low cost sponsership from a local Madaspeed dealership or such?
Do we want to go there?
Lego good point about the mod between the steering wheel and the seat. I finally have gotten a little more comfortable with turn 12. Note: "little". I now I have to fine the sweet spot on turn 1 in 4th gear instead of 3nd. I just get a little excited approaching a turn at 110mph and my entry speed is not what the car is capable off! Instead it is in the range of my feelings of mortality. I usually hear myself saying something like "Dayyymmnn! oh my GOD, oh my GOD, oh my GODDD---!" on both turn 12 and entry into turn 1. When the turn is complete I then hear myself saying "YeeeeeHaaaa! " and "What is that funny smell?"

Greetings Mazda people! I am keeping my butt indoors today along with my RX8. My driveway is a sheet of ice. Hope all of you are doing well.

Charlie posted that his insurance doesn't cover him on track so I took that to mean he may not go. But then again, I am not sure. Work on him y'all. He did say we are definatly doing the open house at Mazcare on Friday. I will probably schedule any routine maintenance earlier that week to allow the out of towners more opportunity to get their cars up on the rack there for tech and the like.

As far as I know, the NASA weekends are open to spectators. Non-NASA members pay a nominal fee (I think it was $5).

I agree with Lego on the limiting factor being the driver rather than the car. More power would help out on the straights but the biggest factor is corner exit. If you figure your corner exit is 5mph faster, you can enter the braking zone +5mph faster as well giving quite an advantage. How much extra hp do you need to build up an extra 5mph? The guy driving the silver Turbo 911 was hitting 135mph into the braking zone for 10A according to a conversation I had with him. I was at 122-125. So better exit from turn 7 may put me at 130ish on the back straight. Additionally, in watching some of my in-car video from December, my best laps were around 2 minutes flat. I researched the NASA site to see results for the races at the last event at Road Atlanta and believe it or not, if I can shave off 5 seconds, I would have been able to hang with seasoned racers in the small bore categories and to be not too far behind some large bore guys. I am sure that my skills can be increased to a point that shaving 10 seconds off is possible without changing the car.

GRT8 - did you wake up this morning and go into your garage to just look at your car? I still do that sometimes. Please keep in touch with us via this thread and at least join us for the open house at Mazcare on March 18th. You can also come out and spectate if you are interested. I am sure we would all like to at least meet you.

Did anyone make a posting on RX7Club.com for this event?

Another idea... We should get some T-shirts made up. I figure we can get some logos on them from the RX8Club.com, Racing Beat, Tein, RX8Store, Mazcare etc. Does anyone want to volunteer to contact those folks to see if they would kick in a few bucks to defray the cost?

This has been a long post... sorry :D

Yeah, I've been looking at'er all day except I don't have a garage. She's all iced over outside just waiting for some sunshine. I had my oil changed at Mazcare two weeks ago in my 6 and talked w/ Charlie for a while.

From reading on NASA's website, for HPDE, you need a Snell rated helmet 95 or better. M95 or M2000 are acceptable. So, check the rating on the helmet as it must have a sticker or something to indicate it's rating. M95, M2000, SA95, or SA2000 seem to be OK. If in doubt, check the NASA website and post on teh forum there.

In looking at the video, his approach/entrance speed was too fast. Also notice that he continued to try and correct the skid after he had left the track. This causes the outside of the tires to dig in the soft dirt and bingo--- turn over time! Correct course of action AFTER you have left the track onto soft dirt and you dont have any control is---- hands off the wheel. Easy to say hard to do. Too bad he wouldn even have hit the wall.

Just spoke with Charlie at Mazcare today. He said he is coming on Saturday. He is off next week and chasing other car nuts in Florida somewhere(he told me the details but I forgot).
Anyway , he installed the act prolite flywheel and the rx 7 automatic counterweight and said it ran perfect. Total weight a tad over 13lbs. That is with bolts ,counterweight and flywheel. Charlie highly recommends the flywheel. Now part of the beauty of this set up is the flywheel is only $250. The counterweight he gets locally for a little over $50. Sum $300! Thats not installed of course. Still that is a real good price for a light flywheel! He also said the driveabilty is great--no problems.

GRT8,

You got your car from David at Team Mazda right? When I was there tonight (2/1/05) he said someone had just traded in his 6 for a nordic green 8 in the past week or so. BTW, if this has been brought up somewhere else on the 8 forum, don't club me to death, but I did notice Mazda did the same thing with the 8 that they did with the FD. First year model had a yellow paint scheme, but the 2nd year it was replaced with a white. The white looks beautiful. I wonder if I can trade the wife in instead of one of the 7's :) I'd probable come out better in the long haul!

The only thing I didn't like was the fact David, who enjoyed talking about the 8 and all the cool things it had to offer, didn't know much about the ECU flashes and which ones would be in the ecu for the 2005 models or the 2004 models they still had on the lot.

I am serious about the flywheel swaps. The only tool I don't have, which I could easily purchase beforehand, is the pilot bearing puller. Every other tool I have in my box(even the big socket and 3/4" drive breaker bar) and can bring with me except for a large floor jack. Remember, I did my own fly and clutch in my driveway, on my back, and in the rain. If we got 4 or 5 guys helping out we could knock each one out in less than 2 hours. Get the keg and 'que involved, it may take a little longer. That would be a cool photostory for RX Tuner, wouldn't it? Kick the idea around and make sure each one of us would still have enough track time.

A light fly will benefit slightly. The light weight makes your drivetrain more efficient. If you aren't planning other upgrades anytime soon a fly may not be a priority. On the other hand if you wanna start a party in the parking lot and take advantage of the free labor offer.....

CRH

You got me bought in. I'll bring the large floor jack. For Autocrosses, I put 4 race tires in the back seats and the jack in the truck. I'll have it with me.

In a few more miles you'll be able to run it all the way up to 9K. When you do that you'll be even further amazed because you'll be staying in the power band the whole time. Like you said, the speed of the car is somewhat deceiving. That's for two reasons. One, as you know, Mazda has done a great job of isolating the drivetrain from the car so we don't feel all of the NVH like in so many other cars. Second, the Renesis has a very flat torque curve and that results in smooth acceleration. I had a chance to drive both the WRX and Evo8 recently and compared to the RX-8 they both felt like trucks. I don't care if those cars are a few tenths quicker, I'm keeping my RX-8.

Using the Zex Smart System we could also do that in about 90 minutes. Lemme know, I'll bring my Uni-Bit and 18v drill. I also have some grommets from work that fit the steel lines perfectly. If by "racks" you are referring to a lift, with that we could do the flys in about an hour each with a few hands. Just ask Ryan, aka "Broke Apex Seal".

Just so happens I have a flywheel from ACT on order. I was planning on getting this done at mazcare before the track day but if that money can be saved i will definitely upgrade your hotel room dude! There is about a 2 hr break inbetween sessions at the track and we have all night friday and saturday! Charlie may let us use the lifts if we ask.
Silvereight some dyno numbers on the forum show a 12-13lb wheel has a 8.8 hp increase in 1-2nd gear then approx 5hp gain for the rest. A big factor is responsiveness.

Yeah, I'm serious. The way I see it major swaps are fairly common in the pits of some serious racers. If we can all help each other and do this the Friday night before the races in a shop with lifts, that's what hot-rodding is all about. Besides, if we allow around 2 hours per swap that should be plenty. Line a couple cars up. I know it sounds crazy but, hey, I did it in my driveway 90% alone and the rest with my brother-in-law and I in the rain. Same with the nitrous. I'll begin preparing a step-by-step as a reminder. I've got 6 weeks to prepare it. Once you see how easy this is you'll understand where I am coming from. The turbo kit is a bit different, though. No superhero claims on my part for that one.

You guys hook up the spot where we can do the labor. I don't care if it is in the pits Saturday morning or someone's house or shop Friday night. Let's also limit it to 2-3 flywheels and maybe a nitrous kit. I'll need some sleep after driving down from Detroit. Let me know what we end up with and I'll plan accordingly.

After a planning session with my GReddy tuner-dude it looks real good for me to have the turbo/nitrous deal all operational and dyno tuned when R/A comes around. I'm looking at 7 psi with a 100 h.p. shot. At least, we'll see if we can get that far. The 55 will work great, that's for sure.

Charlie can get you a counterweight for around $60. From Mazda I think. Be careful on the flywheel. I ordered the one that Charlie got. I am not certain if that was the Prolite or the Streetlite. I do know the TOTAL weight of the flywheel, counterweight and the bolts was a little over 13lbs. The Prolite weight in at around 9lbs. I suspect that it may be too light for street use. I could be wrong. Also the price i paid for mine is compatable for the streetlite version.
Too light a flywheel will really mess up street driving.

When I get the turbo tuned to 7 psi it should add around 100 h.p. to the already 225 mhp(motivational h.p.) at the rear wheels. The 100 shot "should" total around 400-425, if all goes well. That's all a matter of mathematics at this point. Although I don't intend to use the "nos" on the courses I would like to point out that the use of nitrous is not a sudden surge like most would believe. Nitrous tends to magnify the torque curve the engine already has. There is a feeling of added power across the rpm band but when I hit 6K the barn doors fly open. That's no different than when N/A, just bigger numbers. Road racing is why I have decided on the turbo. I figure anybody running a 12 second 1/4 mile has plenty of power for course racing. Denny will be able to give all of you a first-hand description of what it is like to drive an 11 second RX-8 because he will be behind the wheel for a while due to his hospitality.

As far as the flywheel swaps and nitrous go, I enjoy demystifying the concepts of certain mods that are perceived as being complicated or "major". These are neither. When we all start the process those of you with prior experience will be pleased to learn that the RX-8 looks just like your favorite musclecar from the underside, at least as far as the transmission is concerned. A 55 shot of nitrous is the icing on the cake for the RX and will place the 1/4 mile time of even a stock version in the high 13's. Whoever chooses to have me do a nitrous install should plan on new tires, as well. You will get absolutely no traction in first and maybe even some spin going into second.

Doing the swaps/installs in the hotel parking lot may be a bit risky due to local ordinances. We may be better off doing them in the R/A lot or pit area Saturday morning or early evening. I'll bring the tools necessary and even the power cords, if need be. My tool box is not huge but I seem to have put together a box that covers 99% of the situations I have encountered and it still fits in my trunk. I would like to have those whose cars I'll be working on p.m. me so I can begin direct dialogue to ensure that all of the incidentals are covered and we have all of the parts that will be needed.

BTW, that write-up about the flywheel swap in the latest issue of RX Tuner should not serve to discourage those who want me to do one for them. That mechanic must have been an idiot to have not done it right the first time. The only way one can install the flywheel out of balance is to have omitted the keyway that mates the balancer to the e-shaft. That won't happen when we do the swaps.

The differance in performance? I can honestly say that what all you have heard is true. In 1st gear once it gets past 5k you dont have time to think before the tach redlines. 2nd is almost just as strong. 3nd, and the rest still a big differance but it is less than 1st and 2nd.
Its a great mod.
By the way while i was free reving a little we noticed something. I have placed heavyweight plexiglass on the top of my airbox now(great bling factor) and placed a cone filter in it etc. Well when you rev her you can actually see the plexiglass get sucked in a bit from the engine pulling so much air. Makes you think doesnt it.
Allen was out today and charlie and crew where really busy. He and all the crew did say that they are looking forward to all of us coming there on that Friday. I didnt get a chance to ask about the lifts. I dont think it would be a problem. He did register today for the event(said as soon as he got a chance) but said that he would only be able to do Saturday.
For those of you that dont have a light wheel ---you have got to get one !

The flywheel made a big difference on the 3rd gen. Granted it was the butt dyno, but I could feel it more so than when I put in the downpipe and catback.

Here's the question of the day and a major selling point with the wife if we buy an 8. I'm not sure if we could fit a medium size suitcase in the trunk due to the small opening. it would fit once it was in there, but how many harry houdini people have been able to do it?

Tim
I can easily fit any kind of carry on luggage in my trunk. I have also easily fit the next size up suitcase. But, you do have to go in vertical and then negotiate the turn to lay it down into the trunk.

Where did you get the flywheel from?

LEGO,
Through Charlie at Mazcare. The wheel came from umlimited motorsports(friend of his) and Charlie obtained the counterweight locally.

I have been doing pretty well fighting back flywheel urges. You guys are not making this very easy. I had planned to do the Racing Beat intake as my next mod. But, if I am able to successfully duplicate the olddragger intake, that may free up some cash for a prolite flywheel. Decisions, decisions...

Anyone else getting excited about March 19th yet? I am driving myself nuts waiting. Maybe CRH after installing his turbo can take us back to the future in his car...

Saw Charlie and company yesterday. Got the TEINS and the EDFC installed...........OH MY GAWD...SWEET!!! Almost a 2" drop in front and .7 in the back. Dead even gap all the way around now. Tight as a friggin' drum. Softest setting feel is close to stock on the road (well, untill you jerk the wheel and feel like an F18 fighter pilot). The Hardest setting lets you figure out if a coin is on heads or tails.....the car is truly on rails with the set up. I'm having to learn to drive it all over again. Can't wait until March!! Charlie says "Hi".

Dennis, thrilled to hear the upgrade is all you hoped for. I drove Chalie's with your setup and then mine with the MS setup, and well, I really need to drive a stock unit again....real damn hard to "feel" the difference between the two unlike when I moved from stock to the light weight unit. I've been thrilled with the upgrade.....now if the friggin' RB intake would just hurry up.......

Yall "might" want to save your money on the rb intake. Only a 2 hp gain and mine has that at least and much more "bling" factor! I can post the way to do it now if yall want to go ahead.
here we go:
To do the complete mod it is as follows:
1- Remove front bumper(not hard, check the diy thread)
2- take the oem intake pipe off
3-take your airbox out of the car( again easy to do)
4- open airbox, remove all the guts(filter, baffles, cone, screens) ,remove maf from airbox and put in SAFE place.
5- save all the parts!
6- buy an open front cone type filter with a 3 1/2" fitting (you can make a 3" fit but it is much more involved.)
7- cut out the top part of your airbox to the size of the opening you want.
8- buy heavy plexaglass and automotive insulated foam strips(got mine at lowes)
9- buy 1" self tapping crome screws(lowes)
10- buy 4" to 3" adapter from the home heating and cooling section at lowes, home depot etc .
11- buy section from pepboys of 3" automotive heating flextube(lowes didnt have it lol)
12- cut your plexaglass to fit and then mount
13- mount your cone filter to the stock airbox pipe that remains after you remove the velocity stack looking thing from it.
14- replace one mesh screen in its place in the airbox
15- remount your cone filter into the airbox
16- reroute your airintake pipe to whereever you want it(mine is behind the rotory symbol)
17-install the 4"to 3" adapter to the newly rerouted intake pipe.
18 -install the velocity stack looking piece from the airbox to the 4-3 adapter and mount it with a screw to the location you want,
19 put it all back together
sounds much harder than it is!

Alright I did it, I am officially registered for the NASA event! You guys are like a bunch of drug dealers giving out free crack samples! You are all invited to the shop on Friday afternoon/evening for the usual bolt on/ B...sh.. sessions. I'll try to have some video from the old ITS days for you this time. I'll look forward to seeing you all soon.

I may have stretched the truth a little when I said did some testing for the Williams F1 team on the experience part of the registration! They seemed real impressed anyway.

Well, Charlie, you've really raised the level of expectation we have from you with that F1 story, haven't you?

I hate to brag or boast but with that Tein/EDFC story I'll have to check and see if they or JIC are on my new sponsor list. I know I have GReddy, HKS, Volk, Sparco, Turbonetics, APEXi, and a few others helping out. If a part is out there, I'll try it.

Alright, I've talked to my connection with RXTuner and we've got a go for an article if we can compare track day 1 with track day 2. Need the same car/driver for before and after the NOS install or light flywheel install. They prefer to have the NOS. Day 1 without NOS, look as top speed and lap times. Then day 2 with the NOS top speed and lap times. If we can chronical the NOS install, it's gravy. Any takers??? Someone get's their car and person featured in RXTuner and Mr. Hill get's featured for the technical experience. Also, our group gets to be recognized for the awsome bunch of people we are. With some pictures of Mazcare, we should all be able to have a great time and contribute. I'll be happy to write it up. What do you all think??? We need a NOS committment and an install on Sat, or not use it on Sat and use it on Sunday.

Please let me know so I can get back in touch with them ASAP.
